BarFly's Review of Alameda Brewhouse
A cavernous, family-uncomfortably-friendly, decade-old brewpub whose ambitions at times outstrip their realities - large menu of American standards seems thoroughly decent but the extravagance perhaps reflects the absence of any standout dish. Walk to one of the always-crowded booths against the far wall and wait for the overall barn-dance aesthetics to mysteriously warp toward a cozy, well-lit metropolitan boit. Seven award-winning house beers plus a seasonal wild card.

I've been looking around at watering holes in the northeast area of Portland durng my visits recently. I've visited the Alameda Brewhouse twice now, both times on a weekday afternoon happy hour. The $4 appetizer menu is very good -- I like the cajun calamari -- definitely a good deal. I am not a "hop head" so some of the ales are too hoppy for me, but so are Laurelwood's. Moon and Six Pence has a better beer selection but their appetizers really suck. Both times I've found the service to be very friendly and attentive, but not intrusive. And the neighborhood is really nice. Overall a very nice surprise in the Northeast neighborhoods. I'll be Bach!!
I like this place. We have two young kids and we need at least a few places we can go to get some grub (throw us breeders a bone). Some businesses figure out that young families spend plenty of money when they go out, and I'm glad some places cater to us.
I'm not surprised people without children would find it annoying in the early evening, though. I wouldn't take a date there unless you've reached a pretty casual phase in your relationship.
Beer is decent. I like the big menu.
(For the record, some of us actually prefer the company of kids having fun to that of bitter shrews who whine about "snot-nosed brats". Kids are generally more pleasant to be around. If you want to go to a bar without kids, then go to a BAR.)
I have always liked the Alameda. It kinda stinks like vinegar and there are a lot of families in there, but I've always found the food to hit the spot. It might be a little overpriced, but usually the portions are very good sized which speaks to this hard working member of the male gender. They also have a very ample menu which is not a turn off, far too many places don't have enough choices. The beer is okay. When it comes to either frequenting Alameda or Kennedy school, I'll take Alameda 7 out of 10 times.
I live in this neighborhood. This place does tremendous business, for two reasons: 1.) There are tons of young families in this neighborhood who need a kid-friendly brewhouse if they want to enjoy a beer and a meal, and 2.) even though the space is senselessly designed and non-engaging, and even though the food is decent but unremarkable and overpriced, and even though the service is amateurish and slow, and even though the beer is decent but unremarkable, there is a very positive social vibe associated with all the really attractive, happy, middle-to-upper-middle-class, liberal, anglo-saxon families that crowd the place every night, if that's your thing. It's like the vibe of a NW 23rd's younger, more modest sibling. But this brewhouse needs to grow up to keep up with their clientèle. Business just comes way too easy right now.
I used to frequent this place a bit when it first opened in the late 90s... They had a great seafood bisque, but I always thought the beer was pretty so-so. I had not been there in a few years, and was kind of disappointed on a date there recently. The server was weird and spent a very long time talking about his personal life, then disappeared for about 30 minutes after bringing our food (we actually would have appreciated another drink). All in all not recommended, but not horrible.
The beer they brew is awful :( I was totally unimpressed with their beer. The food was great, a little over deep fried but good. The beer was very predictable and boring. A ton of curtain climbing little bratzzzzz too! YUCK..overall I say go once check it out, it may be for you.
If I lived in the neighborhood, liked beer, and had kids, I would probably like this joint a lot. I found it terribly loud. A lot of the customers seemed to have let loose their brats to run the aisles and goof off. I was there with some family myself, but we couldn't hear each other much over the noise. The food was okay; pretty typical pub grub. Others at our table did not care for the beer much. Overall it was underwhelming, and I probably would not go back.
Well since Barf's review I think this place has gone downhill, the attentive servers, good food and tasty drinks were nowhere to be found :( I would think the Mcmenamin chain owns this if I didn't know better. It has the same slow semi-service, predictable beer and greasy over-priced pub food. Not to mention it was topped off with a bunch of bratty kids running around. I would recommend this to anyone who thinks snot nosed, misbehaven children are sweet...or those interested in a bland dirt sandwich sort of dining/drinking experience. On the up side, I will say that the place was immaculate.
