Ive been going to the Alibi for 3 years now. After work and if i wanta go somewhere close. Its hit or miss, people that work there are good when you get to know them. Just a dive karoakee bar with good fried food.
Yes your car will most likely get broken into there, park it as close as possible, happend to me last year.
I used to live near this bar from 2000 to 2004 and went all the time on special occasions with friends. They used to have a great menu with some killer steaks(the teriyaki steak with pineapple was my absolute favorite). I went there recently with some friends and found their menu had changed drastically, was esentially all sandwiches/burgers and deep friend shit. There was a tiny section I almost missed with two or three steak selections; ordering one was disapointing. A tiny slab of grey, overcooked meat, a tiny potato and bread.
The drinks are still great though, but pricey. I guess this bar is just suffering the overall syndrome of the industry, as most bars and resturants are severely downsizing menus to make up for skyrocketing costs, but it was still disappointing.
This was my first time to an American karaoke bar. I've been to just about every other form of karaoke known to man but the American bar variety, strangely enough. I had a lot of fun. The food was very good, and my drink was fairly tasty (I'm a wimp with alcohol so I don't judge on booze strength alone). I only got to sing 3 times in 5 hours, though...
I don't know about you, but I was very happy with the service. Friendly DJ always willing to sing along when a singer is in need of backup and prompts him. My server was Chandler and he was pretty nice.
The bathrooms are like a very small maze which ends in an airplane lavatory. Little people will be quite comfortable, but wheelchair users are left high and dry.
Like with most bars, though, the biggest deterrent for me was the smoke. No, they haven't gone smoke-free as of today, Feb. 25th. If they did, I'd become quite a regular customer. Great karaoke once a week isn't worth a 12-hour cough and increased potential for cancer.
I love the Alibi! It was my favorite bar to go to and still would be it I hadn't been 86'd... Some drunk guido kid shoves a big guy down the stairs for no reason, what do you think is going to happen. So when the little punk didn't shut up he and his 8 friends got rocked by my friend and I. I was a loyal customer to that place and would still love to be. The bartenders and servers rock and so does the atmosphere... I hope to be back soon
Everytime I meet my friends there, we have the most insane time singing and I feel I have to give them props. It was so crowded last weekend and so much fun!! We love it because it's not downtown and there's always fun people watching(and a couple of jerkoffs)but it's so worth it. The drinks there are foofy but we were sticking to our vodka tonics and sodas and they defanitely did the trick. I hate waiting for the bathroom so the girls just take over the boys room anyway. Love the bartenders, the bald boy who's cute and has all the crazyt energy its fun to watch. Only place in Nopo we ever go.
I have been known to go to the Alibi.. sometimes even more than once in a week. I have found that the staff although very often swamped with 'Todds' from the burbs are totally nice and enjoy themselves. The drink menu offers some sweet fruity conncoctions varying from traditional tiki fare... I personally like the Mai Tai; ask for light grenadine and the Carribean Press. But hey you can't go wrong with a shot and complimentary bud back. SO ok yeah there are nights when it's just ridiculously busy and service slows down.. but hey stare at the walls, the lights and the hot bartenders! there's always something to look at.
Its a cool place and our friends love it but I dont get good vibes from the staff or the food. I normally just order a salad and call it good. If you going there, dont be in a hurry, they are not. Singing is fun but unorganized. To busy and it is hard to tell who is singing. Sound is okay but they have a neat autmosphere, they should step up the decor. I give it a 6 for effort-- but make the drinks better and focus on customer service.
When it's packed service can get stinky, when it's slow I've never had a problem. The atmosphere is great for those into the whole retro-googie-tiki thing, and it's nice to spend a few hours whiling away an afternoon, BUT the drinks are the weakest I've ever had in Portland. Stay away from the specialties and stick with shots if yr lookin' to get drunk. I spent 100 bucks one day ad left with only a slight buzz.
Alibi is in my neck of the woods so by default, I like it. However, last time I went, the woman's bathroom was not working and we had to share with the guys which was neat in an Ally McBeal way but not really. And fortunately I am not a big person so I can fit thru the bathroom's tiny doors (no way can these be ADA compliant--I feel sorry if a person in a wheelchair decided to come; skinny doors and only steps up to the karoake area). Plus a friend and my husband both got sick from eating the free midnight buffet. I didn't get sick because I didn't eat it. Other than that, I really like the karoake action.
I just went to the Alibi with the Viking Shark Attack last night, and lemme tell you - it was not worthy of this gang's majesty, affability and generous tippery. I usually sit in the karaoke area at this place and get GREAT service, even on a busy weekend night. But last night, Tuesday, sitting in the "non-singing" area, the VSA got totally abandoned! Their waitress suddenly stopped coming over to take drink orders, so the girls decided to leave, but then they couldn't even get their card back until quite some time later. I understand that the bulk of their income must come from the karaoke crowd, but really, the shouldn't ignore their other customers.
Also, the Viking and the Sharks reported that their drinks were awfully weak and watery. I cannot personally testify to this as I was not drinking myself (designated driver - yay me!), but I can infer . . . those girls spent $50 on booze and weren't the least bit tipsty.
Come on Larry, you know you like the slong!!!!!!!!!! you and your botty boy friends can sing all the frank sinatra you want and you wont make it to the graduation party!!!! p.s. weak drinks,
Judging the outside I thouht it might be OK, but I was way off. Once walking in this place it was dirty and smelled like mold. The service was terrible, it took about 20 minutes to get service at the bar stool. Once my drink was ordered and arrived it was like drinking water. I've never had a watered down drink on the East Side, (Maybe a watered down drink is exceptable on the WEST side, but should never happen on the EAST.) So in a nut shell: Shitty service, watered down drinks, moderately expensive, and the place is fucking dirty. I'm never going back, but you should all go there once to make the judgement call.
Though the Alibi can be a bit depressing, it is still one of the best places to go for karaoke. The drinks suck, but hey, the free food at midnight makes up for it. Love the wide variety of clientele.
Awesome atmosphere, great staff, very friendly. Unusual drinks as well as the norms. Food is great late night bar food, sandwiches, burgers, fries, etc...a great place to get blotto with friends and belt out some tunes.
the most watered down drink i've ever had in my life and it was expensive. and unlike what all these other people say, i wasn't an ass. I am a bartender and i know how it is, so i was a super nice guy, waited a super long time and got the worst drink in my life. but the kareoke was good. very entertaining. just get wasted before you go and dont order any drinks.
I always have on a Hawaiian shirt (Aloha Shirt) I love this place. I had my bachelor party at the Alibi 14 years ago. They where then a longshoreman's bar. I still go there to this day. If you got a watered down drink, you were bening an Ass, and it's might be better for all if you drank your anti-trendy PBR somewhere else. Me I order a shot of J & B and enjoy a steak w/fries. I am glad that the staff now wears Hawaiiana styled shirts. Go to goodwill, get a LOUD cheap shirt, and get snockered. Peace Uncle Steve
Just a fun place - especially with groups. At times the singers get real annoying - that is why it better to be drunk BEFORE you go here.
I believe it is Alibi policy to make the obviously uptight wait a really long time for their Masturbating Monkey...It's an Island thing....ReDamnLax K?
Jeezus, people chill out. The Alibi is a FUN place, unless you despise karaoke. I'm no aficiondo, but it's by far the best karaoke place I've been. The atmosphere is retro tiki and the clientele is mixed and laid-back. Smoke a fatty and check it out. My geezer parents loved it. Food isn't great, but better than I thought it'd be.
This place had interesting decor but that was it. My friends and I went and we had watered down expensive drink and waited an hour and a half for our dinner. Pretty Pathetic don't waste your time
A little of everything tropical if you like that sort of thing in Ptown rainy ass Oregon. Good drinks as long as you are polite (which you should be when you are ordering service)I myself am addicted the the blue bacon burger.
It's the only time to go- you may hear something interesting and not the zillionth rendition of "Me and Bobby Mcgee"
The drinks suck, the food is poison- but at least it's not a sports bar- and most of the pretentious hipster fucks stay away
Well its a Tiki bar, and a karaoke bar, but unless you are really into Tiki or Karaoke, you wont be impressed. The service was slow, and not particularly friendly. The drinks were small, expensive and VERY watered down. I probably wont go back unless I get a hankerin' for some Sunday night karaoke.
i like the actual bar itself. the vibe sucked. my drink was water. i did enjoy watching the dining and dancing.i should have stayed at crow bar.
i found the alibi earlier this year looking for work. Even tho I never got the job this bar had a wonderful atmosphere, it is an orginal tikki bar and athunentic theme and atmosphere made it warm and inviting its a little piece of the islands here in p-town. A great place not far away to get away to the islands.
