Poor Customer Sevice...

The Place looked nice enough when we walked in the door, the bartender seemed friendly, everything was good until we met the KJ. He had an "I don't have time for you" attitude, Refused to play music that people bring from home, was late starting his show and had a personality that would make Steven Wright look Flashy. All the makings of a Karaoke place that hired a typical young KJ that knows nothing about how to put on a Karaoke show and How to take care of the customers.

Also the Sound system was underpowered for the kind of volume that he was attempting to achieve. Under powered AMPs, Bad Speaker Placement and a KJ that Can't mix to save his life.

And as seems to be par for the course in most bars in the Portland area, he acted like he was better than everyone in the room.

If you want good Karaoke, Avoid the Alibi.

Uptight staff/ Watered down drinx/the place is a dump

Don't waste your time there. It looks cool from the outside, but the wait staff/bartenders are uptight a-holes with ZERO people skills who make it as fun to be there as waiting at the DMV. There are much better karaoke bars in Portland. I give it a "0" out of "5" stars, and along with my large group of friends, wont be spending another dime there ever again.

GREAT!

I don't understand all of the bad reviews. I have been here many many times over the last few years and have never had a bad experience. This is by far the best place for people-watching. I like to have dinner and sit back and enjoy the karaoke show. You get everyone singing from after-work drink folks to people that want to be Diana Ross but don't have the actual pipes for it. I have had drinks here with friends and have NEVER heard anyone in my party complain about the drinks being too weak. I would recommend this place to everyone that wants to karaoke or watch!

cheap eats!!

The Alibi 4024 N. Interstate Happy Hour 3-7 Daily For some reason this joint gets a bad rap. If you try to look it up on the internet, the reviews literally get worse and worse. I honestly don’t get it. The Alibi lights up Interstate with all the glory of a Reno Casino. Enter, and its nighttime-all the time, also similar to a Reno casino. Day-glo hula girls, cozy fireplace, a strange mobile home-like restroom...what’s not to love? On top of this, they offer one of the best happy-hour food menus in Portland that i’ve found to date. Bleary-eyes and double-vision are the norm here

Now when I say “best”, I mean lots of options at low, low prices. Don’t go in there with your refined palate seeking some revolutionary culinary masterpiece. We’re talking comfort food. Good, normal basics at $1.95 to $3.95 and you will leave there full and even possibly with leftovers. I’ve been to a ton of happy hours and usually the menu consists of teeny tiny plates of something meant to be a snack, or a big basket of something fried and greasy. This place gives you an actual meal. I went in there starving and saw they had a $2.95 meat lasagna listed. Extremely skeptical I asked the waitress about its quality and portion size. She simply assured me that it was good. I ordered it out of the sheer morbid curiosity of what a $2.95 meat lasagna must look like. I had flashes of bad frozen ones from the freezer section of the liquor store eaten after too many drinks. My dining companion chose the ‘Kahlua Pork’ which consisted of pulled pork sandwich, steamed rice, and a side of macaroni salad for $3.95. Food arrived quickly and we both stared in disbelief. Both were full sized, restaurant quality meals. They were honestly so impressive we whipped out our camera phones and snapped pictures to brag to our friends about the awesome deal we found. The lasagna was a cheese-lover’s dream. The top was covered in two kinds of melted cheese and the inside oozed with even more. I could not finish the portion that was served to me, but I wanted to. The pulled pork sandwich was tasty as well, albeit a bit dry. Nonetheless it was a hearty “man’s meal”. The Kaluha Pork

The happy hour menu is extensive with more choices than most. For $1.95 you can choose from fries, chips and salsa, salad, soup of the day, or Zucchini sticks. For $2.95 there’s a burger basket w/ fries, chicken strips and fries, Hot wings, deli sandwich w/soup, pepper jack mac n cheese, tater tots. For the big $3.95 splurge you can get a BBQ cheddar burger basket, cheese quesadilla, potato skins, kahlua pork, shoyu chicken, or the luau pork sandwich. The Chicken strips. And yes, It has the "good" batter

For the price and the portions, this place is my favorite happy hour destination. Under $9 for two people to sit down and eat and be full? Sometimes with leftovers? Unheard of! It’s a must for anyone on a budget, who likes lots to choose from. Not just fries and nachos here! The ambiance is cozy, kitschy, and friendly with a good wait-staff. The patrons run the gambit of quiet regular to a pirate themed bachlorette party on any given day, at any given time. No, you won’t find any “crispy fried shallots” or “Pancetta-wrapped anything” on this menu but you will find a damned good bargain.

Birthday Parties

I have been having my birthday party at this bar for...well this will be my 3rd one. The staff is always attentive and the bartenders always come up with a Katy shot for me. The crowd always joins in and it is like having a huge birthday party with new friends. This year.....pirate/schoolgirl theme.!! Oh and I will be 56.

Drinks are still great, food is not

I used to live near this bar from 2000 to 2004 and went all the time on special occasions with friends. They used to have a great menu with some killer steaks(the teriyaki steak with pineapple was my absolute favorite). I went there recently with some friends and found their menu had changed drastically, was esentially all sandwiches/burgers and deep friend shit. There was a tiny section I almost missed with two or three steak selections; ordering one was disapointing. A tiny slab of grey, overcooked meat, a tiny potato and bread.

The drinks are still great though, but pricey. I guess this bar is just suffering the overall syndrome of the industry, as most bars and resturants are severely downsizing menus to make up for skyrocketing costs, but it was still disappointing.

Had a good time

This was my first time to an American karaoke bar. I've been to just about every other form of karaoke known to man but the American bar variety, strangely enough. I had a lot of fun. The food was very good, and my drink was fairly tasty (I'm a wimp with alcohol so I don't judge on booze strength alone). I only got to sing 3 times in 5 hours, though...

I don't know about you, but I was very happy with the service. Friendly DJ always willing to sing along when a singer is in need of backup and prompts him. My server was Chandler and he was pretty nice.

The bathrooms are like a very small maze which ends in an airplane lavatory. Little people will be quite comfortable, but wheelchair users are left high and dry.

Like with most bars, though, the biggest deterrent for me was the smoke. No, they haven't gone smoke-free as of today, Feb. 25th. If they did, I'd become quite a regular customer. Great karaoke once a week isn't worth a 12-hour cough and increased potential for cancer.

Can I come back???

I love the Alibi! It was my favorite bar to go to and still would be it I hadn't been 86'd... Some drunk guido kid shoves a big guy down the stairs for no reason, what do you think is going to happen. So when the little punk didn't shut up he and his 8 friends got rocked by my friend and I. I was a loyal customer to that place and would still love to be. The bartenders and servers rock and so does the atmosphere... I hope to be back soon

Everytime I meet my friends there, we have the most insane time singing and I feel I have to give them props. It was so crowded last weekend and so much fun!! We love it because it's not downtown and there's always fun people watching(and a couple of jerkoffs)but it's so worth it. The drinks there are foofy but we were sticking to our vodka tonics and sodas and they defanitely did the trick. I hate waiting for the bathroom so the girls just take over the boys room anyway. Love the bartenders, the bald boy who's cute and has all the crazyt energy its fun to watch. Only place in Nopo we ever go.

fun and friendly

I have been known to go to the Alibi.. sometimes even more than once in a week. I have found that the staff although very often swamped with 'Todds' from the burbs are totally nice and enjoy themselves. The drink menu offers some sweet fruity conncoctions varying from traditional tiki fare... I personally like the Mai Tai; ask for light grenadine and the Carribean Press. But hey you can't go wrong with a shot and complimentary bud back. SO ok yeah there are nights when it's just ridiculously busy and service slows down.. but hey stare at the walls, the lights and the hot bartenders! there's always something to look at.

Its fun but poor service

Its a cool place and our friends love it but I dont get good vibes from the staff or the food. I normally just order a salad and call it good. If you going there, dont be in a hurry, they are not. Singing is fun but unorganized. To busy and it is hard to tell who is singing. Sound is okay but they have a neat autmosphere, they should step up the decor. I give it a 6 for effort-- but make the drinks better and focus on customer service.

W eak drinks, great atmosphere

When it's packed service can get stinky, when it's slow I've never had a problem. The atmosphere is great for those into the whole retro-googie-tiki thing, and it's nice to spend a few hours whiling away an afternoon, BUT the drinks are the weakest I've ever had in Portland. Stay away from the specialties and stick with shots if yr lookin' to get drunk. I spent 100 bucks one day ad left with only a slight buzz.

good and bad

Alibi is in my neck of the woods so by default, I like it. However, last time I went, the woman's bathroom was not working and we had to share with the guys which was neat in an Ally McBeal way but not really. And fortunately I am not a big person so I can fit thru the bathroom's tiny doors (no way can these be ADA compliant--I feel sorry if a person in a wheelchair decided to come; skinny doors and only steps up to the karoake area). Plus a friend and my husband both got sick from eating the free midnight buffet. I didn't get sick because I didn't eat it. Other than that, I really like the karoake action.

discrimination against those who don't sing?

I just went to the Alibi with the Viking Shark Attack last night, and lemme tell you - it was not worthy of this gang's majesty, affability and generous tippery. I usually sit in the karaoke area at this place and get GREAT service, even on a busy weekend night. But last night, Tuesday, sitting in the "non-singing" area, the VSA got totally abandoned! Their waitress suddenly stopped coming over to take drink orders, so the girls decided to leave, but then they couldn't even get their card back until quite some time later. I understand that the bulk of their income must come from the karaoke crowd, but really, the shouldn't ignore their other customers.

Also, the Viking and the Sharks reported that their drinks were awfully weak and watery. I cannot personally testify to this as I was not drinking myself (designated driver - yay me!), but I can infer . . . those girls spent $50 on booze and weren't the least bit tipsty.

Terrible Service and Dirty

Judging the outside I thouht it might be OK, but I was way off. Once walking in this place it was dirty and smelled like mold. The service was terrible, it took about 20 minutes to get service at the bar stool. Once my drink was ordered and arrived it was like drinking water. I've never had a watered down drink on the East Side, (Maybe a watered down drink is exceptable on the WEST side, but should never happen on the EAST.) So in a nut shell: Shitty service, watered down drinks, moderately expensive, and the place is fucking dirty. I'm never going back, but you should all go there once to make the judgement call.

The Alibi = Kooool

I always have on a Hawaiian shirt (Aloha Shirt) I love this place. I had my bachelor party at the Alibi 14 years ago. They where then a longshoreman's bar. I still go there to this day. If you got a watered down drink, you were bening an Ass, and it's might be better for all if you drank your anti-trendy PBR somewhere else. Me I order a shot of J & B and enjoy a steak w/fries. I am glad that the staff now wears Hawaiiana styled shirts. Go to goodwill, get a LOUD cheap shirt, and get snockered. Peace Uncle Steve
