BarFly's Review of Ararat
Moved to a new location on 92nd & Foster. Here is our old review:
The Armenian disco so luxuriates in stereotypes - stunning damsels frozen to 1989 ho couture, a wall of unsmiling and heavily-accented thugs clad in identical overcoats - it transcends expectations. With conversation impossible and navigating the darkened corridors a potentially-fatal mistake, there's little to do but sweat out the vodka on the dance floor, and, tunes ranging from Portland's best house to Eastern Bloc techno, few places better enable unselfconscious ass-shaking. In Russia, the dance clubs you!
We stopped by the new location, but it either isn't open yet or is no longer a dance club. The sign on the door said something like "Bakery, Deli, Catering, European Groceries." Maybe "European Groceries" is code for "DJs and Dancing." If not, it appears that the Ararat we all know and love is toast. Get your act together, BarFly, and find out what's happening!

I have been a major fan of Ararat and consider the owners Nellie and Abo my friends - going back to 2002. I have had a lot of great times at the old MLK location but have been search for the new digs - the phone number you have above doesn't work!! It's the old number from MLK. I only knew that they moved to 92nd - but not what part of 92nd - now that you have helped I will be checking out the new digs shortly.

How do you say party in russian? ARARAT, i guess. if you like to stay up late and take x, coke, and dare i say it, meth; this is the place to be. they play the best music and there is a house dealer who can be bribed to oblige with just the right amount of dollars(rubles not accepted) and chutzpah. if you are scared or don't know how to party, then don't bother. these guys can smell a rat a mile away. if you are a cool partier and know how to get your drugs, come on over to ararat, they are awesome, and so is the music. PARTY ON!

Check out the Sub Rosa Tarragon vodka behind the bar at Ararat. 90 proof. Made here in Portland. This infused gem echoes back to Old Russia, where you soaked local herbs and grasses to flavor one's vodka. The place reminds me of Khavarosk in the Russian Far East. For you who don't know, Khavarosk is one of Portland's sister cities. Dosvidanya. Paka.

I found this bar for the first time last night. I'm a pretty boy from Seattle so I was very thrilled to find other pretty boys from Portland. Some day I hope to make pretty boy music, like the beat that I can't get out of my head from that cold war bar.

I’ve been searching for good house music for a wile. It offers dancing all night, it’s kinda smoky, smaller then I expected, nice bartenders, plenty of thungs, but overall if your there for the music it’s all allright. It is loud but loud is good particularly for house. $7 cover when I was there. The decor leaves something to be desired. And the best (only?) house in Portland.

Can't believe all-night dancing in my hometown!! Just discovered it, and f-u to all who think it's "too loud." Take a f-ing pill and try to have some real fun in your pathetic life. This place is DA BOMB!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

...yet extremely disrespectful to the folks living next door. Noisy as all hell! If they continue their obvious disregard to those sleeping at 4 am in the buiding less than 50 feet away, they will surely get shut down very soon.

Beautiful women, but the DJ would mercilessly drop the beat. So horrible to be dancing and have the music just stop. Mix your tunes man!!

Generally worth checking out. There was a massive fight there a couple weeks ago. Of course, all started by a 5'4" guy with a lot to prove. It was entertaining though.

What cover?? I never get charged!
Visit it only for it's music, which in fact pretty damn good!! Women are easy and dressed as if they're stuck in 80's, men are there to pick some drunk russian hos.
Drinks are pretty strong which is a big plus.
Overall, very trashy and small. I do not recommend it !

I love this place because they play all the cheesy russian techno that was popular in 1992. I miss my motherland but Ararat helps me to numb the nostalgia. All the girls in the bar are natural and beautiful. Come and dance with us!!!

Cancel your plane trip to Moscow and take the Max to this red scare of a bar. Seriously, the women are sexy, foreign and get all juiced up when they hear your husky 'american accent'... the men are thugs but nothing a slap on the back and a round of vodka shots can't solve.
