I was excited to visit this new place, being a resident of the neighborhood, however I was really disappointed with the food. For having such a small menu (after all, the drinks are the "main event") you'd think that the limited selection would be top-notch. Not so. I ordered the tomato & potato gratin with kale, while my boyfriend got a grilled cheese and tomato soup (with drinks, of course.) Both were, dare I say, gross. The potatoes weren't cooked through, kale was over-cooked and cold, the tomato soup tasted like Chef Boyardee and I'm not sure if there was any cheese on the sandwich at all. Staff were pleasant enough, but I would never go here again. Sad.
We live in the neighborhood and were excited about a new wine bar, just the kind of place to walk to on a Tuesday night for a reasonable meal and glass of wine. We did get great great food however it was way overpriced for the quantity and if I wanted to pay $8-$10 a glass for wine, I would have put on my chi-chi clothes and headed down to the pearl.
Why don't they realize that inner SE is more about substance than style. ...it's not too late and I hope they read these reviews. A Vegan option would also be nice.
So I checked out my new neighbor on it's second night open. You first walk into the Ikea-esque greeted by the friendly staff all wearing their spiffy matching T-shirts. Although the Avignon website mentions one of their likes as "cheap wine that tastes good", I assure you, the menu has anything but. I found the wine list in particular to be a tad overpriced, as is the food menu. If I am paying entree prices, I should receive entree portions, not wine bar bites. Although I will say, the food that we had was good. They do have a limited bar, as well has a few taps, which, although few in number, impressed me by the selections. In short, I would suggest they ditch the matching shirts (it bothers me, I don't know why), lower the prices, or at least inject a happy hour, and throw on a couple of cheaper bottles of red to the menu. I mean really, who is going to walk in and order the $257 bottle?
