BarFly's Review of Bar Eighty-Four (CLOSED)
Now closed. Review saved for posterity
(Formerly American Cowgirls.) Spacious dance club is an unpretentious alternative to the sometimes snobby downtown scene. Fun deejays spin a mix of Top 40, dance rock, disco, and old school. Dancing on the bar is encouraged (for girls, anyway)! Happy hour brings a mix of neighborhood office workers, while the nighttime scene is more 25-40 y.o. singles. A good place for big groups - three VIP areas are available for reservation at $25/hour (by reservation, only - includes cover for entire party, balloons, and party favors). Convenient to the Rose Quarter and Convention Center, good for pre- and post-event rendezvous. Casual dress code (no gang attire, but other than that, no big whoop).
Spirit of 77
Bar 84 creates a beautiful and comfy atmosphere, without the outrageous prices of the downtown scene... Grey goose for only 7 bucks, when its almost 9 every else you go, not to mention the bar always seems clean... You feel okay drinking and eating there, not like havcing a raunchy steak in a SE Portland strip club... The bartenders are not only friendly and beautiful.. But VERY efficient and hardworking, pouring some of the best drinks ive had in Portland! Its the only bar ive seen where 2 bartenders can hold their own with over 300 people at one time. The DJ always is playing fun, danceable music and every time I go, myself, my friends, and every one else seems to have a great time! Now I go on Mondays to catch the football game, and if Im lucky, I can score some of their awesome chicken and waffles before they run out. FUN place to watch the game too... they have a huge projection screen too! It's bad ass! I would bring any of my friends to this bar
me and my bf and some friends met up at this place a little over a month ago...fuck were we surprised. There was no one on the dance floor (and this was at around 11pm on a friday or saturday night), everyone looked about a few days passed their 16th bday, and the dj looked a little younger than that. I felt like I was at some drama filled high school house party, only with more expensive drinks and shitty ass music remixes playing. I had a weak ass margarita that was $7, and none of my friends or boyfriend were impressed at all and left after our 1 drink. We went to Yun's over in gresham and had a blast their, at least they play dance-able good music and pour wicked strong drinks. Overall, i would never suggest this place to anyone that likes to go dancing...way lame. :(
I've been wanting a fun place to hang out at after the Blazers' games, and Bar 84 is great for that. I've been in on different days of the week, and have had the most fun on Fridays when their DJ Clint Kuper has played, because people rock out! I like the changes from American Cowgirls - it's a more comfortable environment with couches and lounge areas, and the name is a lot better.
this place is quickly becoming the best of both worlds...a cool bar to hang out at without all the lines and dress codes of the downtown scene. great bartending staff, great dj's, and a cool atmosphere. they even have parking. much better than american cowgirls was...
