BarFly's Review of Beaker & Flask

Oh, the supergroup has a spotty rock/roll history, to be true, and yet Kevin Ludwig’s Beaker & Flask, ensconced amid Portland’s artisanal Distillery Row, has gone for it whole-heartedly among the wonky side of the bartender trade, pulling mostly from the original Clyde Common crew to make—note-perfect, hot-shit-damn—one of the best cocktail-menu/cocktail-maker mergers the city has seen.

If you have obscure yet tasteful tastes in drink, this is your Mecca, obverse of the great white porcelain gods the morning after. It is, as it goes, a temple devoted to liquor in its classiest and most trend-conscious form; if you hate that, avoid, because they like their liquor better than they like you (no offense).

The food is a no-slouch eclectic NW-Americana (2009 WW restaurant-of-year, yo), but to the true drink devotee even the stellar food—Portland’s irritatingly sanctimonious foodie culture be damned—is all really just an excuse to taste a perfect classic martini, a perfect Sazerac, a local-to-sciencey new concoction, made by cocktail snobs as casually geeky about their trade as will ever come.

Just don’t come with an empty wallet—its happy hour forgives only the largely disappeared middle class.

  2. ALL CAPS does not get get your point across, but it does make you look completely stupid. The button on your keyboard is clearly labeled CapsLock. Move your pinky 5/16ths of an inch and turn it off.

  3. Mockery is cool, libel isn't. Learn the difference. Naming names in a negative or totally false review? You forfeit your right to privacy and will be named if any legal issues arise.

  4. Were you 86ed for being a complete douchebag? Are you the perpetually unsatisfied bitch? The bartender's psycho ex? Are you copy & pasting the same review from/to Yelp, Citysearch, etc? Then you undermine the value of user reviews. Don't waste your time posting.

  5. The 1st Amendment covers your right to say what ever you want and our right to delete it off our server.
