BarFly's Review of Beauty Bar

Look, Beauty: we wanted to like you. We’ve been to the NYC and Los Angeles incarnations, and you made sense there, and we felt like this was Portland hipsterdom’s equivalent of the Starbucks which signals a neighborhood’s arrival and imminent downfall. And oh, how we’ve been waiting for Portland’s downfall.

But look: the franchise here seems silly in its thin dusting of pink paint over the old Voleur space (still full of all Voleur’s weird juju but divested of the anarchy), its foiled up beauty-school chairs, its corporate BB logos strewn throughout.

The drinks cost just a hair over Portland-acceptable, and on opening weekend the clientele consisted entirely of those little emo-haired, short-tightsed, animal-print-and-bandana children of the California shore—firmly a year past their entire useless SoCal culture’s expiration date—the girls who probably spent their whole high school years trying to sneak into the Beauty Bar off the Sunset Strip before riding the hipster bus to P-Town on the ink fumes of ten thousand newspaper articles directing them northwards. We swear, we got a contact coke buzz just standing in the bathroom* line. Like we said: we wanted to like you, but you may be a touch too early.

manicure and martini deal

Went for the manicure and martini special. I called in the day prior to see if appointments were needed. He said the earlier you come the less of a wait. We arrived at 4:30pm and were the first get our manicures. The bartender wasn't very welcoming or thankful when we left.

The manicurist was cute as a button as another review said. She made the $10 worth it. Not a large color pallet to choose from, a lot of bright colors. But she said people are welcome to bring their own polish. Manicures were not full on manicures, but enough to enjoy my time with my martini in the fun atmosphere! There were 8 people waiting after us. We recommended she call the other manicurist because there were some ladies waiting who didn't look so happy. The line might be long if you're waiting for a manicure but let's remember it's a BAR not a salon. If you don't wanna wait for a great deal then go pay $18 for a manicure at a salon without a martini.

I would love to come back at night. See the bar at night and use the cute photo booth upstairs.

They just opened, so I don't think it is fair to complain quite yet. Once they see how popular their mani martini deal is, they will figure things out.

I would recommend this place to anyone. Portland was definitely in need of a place like this. Great idea!

They used the high end liquor for the martinis, they were very tasty!
