BarFly's Review of Belmont's Inn
When people speak of Belmont's loyal gang, they mean it a little less literally these days. It's not gentrification, exactly more a fitfully-comfortable detente between the old regulars and new emigres drawn to the pool tables, umpteen taps and 365-days-a-year boozed-up bonhomie.
Near the end of Thursday afternoons' SRO (three figure payout) trivia contests, grizzled veterans of the bar trickle onto stools and watch the uber-nerds battles with an amused, bittersweet tolerance. Not that the braniacs linger, of course.

I absolutely love this bar now that it's non smoking. I go to all of the UFC events and am looking forward to the NFL season. The crowd is very fun and respectful. Yes, the food is strickly bar food, but the staff is friendly!
music is gone because a couple of wanna bees started playin okay corral at and around the bar. they fired several shots both in and out of the bar.the o.l.c.c. said if you ever have live music again we will shut you down! hence no more music. simple.
The place used to be a quiet neighborhood type of drop in spot with the Polish Prince on the jukebox. The the bands came and it became lively...all of a sudden the bands dissapeared for no apparent reason. Maybe the stout pours finally got me & I missed it all. Happened sometimes...Chess
I like belmont's during the day or sunny spring summer early evenings... there is such a great view there... the food is good and I usually always get a decent pour. The late night crowd can get a bit toolish (and always has) so I avoid it like the plague after about 8 at night.
Re: the question about Belmont's changing/getting rid of bands. Hey you should have seen that one coming the moment they changed the belmont dairy into the condos/townhomes.
I said to myself that live music at belmont's inn is ticking down as soon as lil Erik Sten started using his cheesy campaign commercials about how he "cleaned up belmont" then 6 months within the opening of the townhomes the music was gone. But speeding up the process was the fact that there was a shooting there during a show I believe.
After not going in in quite some time, I was asked by a friend to meet him there for a beer after work. After my last "experience" in this spot I was a little reluctant to give it another go but I did so, none the less. Well, I am happy to say that this place has taken a 360 degree turn for the better. Same as before the same fuckin He-man size dude doin security was there and same as always said dude was cool as hell. This guy just does what a bouncer is supposed to do. He checks IDs at the door (well, just inside) helps keep the peace, (which for the size of this dude you would have to be seriously crazy to fuck with someone that size drunk or not) and generally just has an eye on everything. Not too controlling, but his presence in this place is def. the reason there is not too many brawls in this place like say, Sewickly's on a saturday night (which currently has, NO security AT ALL, and that just plain STUPID!) The bar keep this time around was pleasant, if not all out actually nice, and her libation actually left an effect on me. It's good to see such improvements in this place. As I said in my last review, this place used to be crackin off back in the late 80's thru the latter mid 90's before pulling their live music stage and basically killing the scene that Belmont's brought to an otherwise calmer neighborhood. Why they did that is still a mystery to me.It's like saying....."Hey, I wonder how I can take away 85% of my business ina matter of one bad decision?". Needless to say, like every other rediculous decision made concerning a bar, tavern or pub in this town, the OLCC or POG (Portland Oregon Gestapo) most likely had something to do with it. So anywho, I must say really nice to see a good turn around.I actually saw that they have been having DJs in there lately too.....Who knows maybe you will even see yours truly spinnin the "Wheels O' Steal" in there soon......Stranger things have happened.Word.
I just found this website and wanted to chime in on my favorite bar. I LOVE Belmont's! It is the most diverse bar I have been to in PDX (and I have been to a lot!). They mix a great drink and have a very flavorful customer base. They started showing UFC fights last year and it is a great place to watch sans cover! I read the other reviews and would love to know where the folks go who claim Belmont's has a light pour. I have been to all sorts of places around town and I have never been to a place whose pour was comparable to Belmont's for the $$$. Don't be a hater...as one reviewer mentioned, if you don't dig the flavor, the Aalto is right across the street...you will find all of the uber-cool you need there!
a fun place to watch the UFC instead of paying 40 bux to see it at home. Spend the cash on food, drinks and tipping the waitstaff.
Maybe even trading rounds with others.
I've been half a dozen times and no complaints.
I have been to Belmont's many times over many years and have never had a "bad" experience. It isn't exactly my favorite place or anything, but the bartenders and wait staff have always been great. The drinks could be stronger but they are far from under poured-- I just like my shit heavy. The patrons have always been friendly and extremely loud and wasted. That's all good, obviously that is why we go to bars, to get fucked up! The food is also good from what I've eaten. Run of the mill bar menu, better than average burgers. It's really a fun bar overall-- best to go with some friends. If you're alone trying to focus on getting wasted you can definitely find a calmer spot.
In the 90's this place was the spot.Dope ass live music!Killer barkeep....and then it ended.Let this place die.Last time in...Security dude=Hella cool.....Bartender=Total bitch w/ an attitude and a REALLY shitty pour.I guess I don't look like the Emo Nerd/Alpha Gamma Dumbfuck type..bummer.Next.
Patrons remind me of after school detention, but on the other hand, great bartenders. Terribly good food. Avoid late night crowds!!!
A good place to actually meet people and/or get your drink going and/or play pool and/or drink with friends. I always end up there after going to many other places.
Staff is awesome.
Whee! A self-flagellation of ebullience exists in this formerly sleepy corner bar. Wingnuts, babbling ectomorphs, and beautiful mutants share barstools with costume-designing nymphs. Sharon Stone had lunch in the "fishbowl" in 1994.
This place serves up the best value in town. The burgers are 1/2 pounders and are better than any other I can think of. The drinks are GREAT for the price. Try going somewhere else and getting a drink that good...no matter what you pay! The crowd gets a little wild sometimes but that just adds to the fun of the place. If you can't handle flavor, just go across to the Alto, I'm sure you'll fit right in.
Great strong drinks, and a kick ass quiz night on Thursday nights. Service could be a little better on quiz nights, but hey, its still a great night out in SE.
Belmont's is the best. The atmosphere is chill and they have the greatest bartenders. Great place if you want to get you ass kicked at pool since most of the sharks in Portland go there.
horrible crowd of insolent boys, both crackheads and fratboys atempting to appear educated while debating the rules of their pool game; while also trying to bribe young women to remove their clothing for an overpriced underpoured drink, Where are all the hottie bartenders.
Great local beer selection at reasonable prices, cheap cocktails, and "no frills" decor. Decent but limited-in-scope bar snacks with happy hour discount (think fries), though for an actual meal (burgers+) you have to pay full price, around $6-8.
