BarFly's Review of Spice

formerly Billy Reed's

Billy Reed's review: Sprawling bar and restaurant in defunct dairy building. Industrial space (the ladies room stalls could withstand photon blasts) warmed up by a funky world mural, & oddly personal touches here and there. Internet terminals for public use off bar; pool and other games. Mostly non-smoking, except for bar. $3.00 wells, $2.95 menu 3-6:30pm everyday. Live music Thurs-Sunday, live close-up magic most nights, too. Open 11am-midnight w/d, till 1am w/e. Unique shuttle service available aboard the "Billy Bus". Call for info.

Still Worst Service Ever
My friend and I stood at the bar for 15 minutes while people just walking up were served before us. Another woman was having the same problem. She did manage to get one bartender's attention only to have the bartender turn away and wait on someone else. The other bartender complained that it was his night off and he had to work. Aw, gee, cry me a river. When my friend and I complained about the lack of service we were told "Well, if you understood that there are other people here besides you.." We walked out and will never be back. That bartender should lose his job!

Worst Service Ever
We attempted to make Spice our new Happy Hour spot. There are often quite a few of us so, we tried somewhere kind of local, with lots of room where we could chill, drink beers, listen to music and relax. Spice SEEMED to fit the bill. We tried a few times even but here's where we landed...Spice sucks. We gave them our business a half dozen times, some experiences decent - most not - culminating in a horrible experience with a bitter bartender who was sarcastic and blatantly rude to entertain her "regulars" at the bar. L A M E. Don't bother trying. They'll be out of business soon.

Gone downhill
I can safely say that this new incarnation in the Billy Reed's space, Spice, is AWFUL. My friend and I walked in on the way home from work one night, around 8, and sat at the bar. There were MAYBE 10 other people in the place - and the bartender just kept walking right past us, completely ignoring us, for no apparent reason. After 15 minutes we gave up and walked out. The other patrons were staring at us, too - apparently the fact that we looked like we were gainfully employed was some sort of a problem for them. Don't bother with this place. It's pathetic and has this weird reverse classist thing going on. I had been there once before, immediately after it became Spice, and had a good experience. Apparently, that's a thing of the past.

New Changes
I have been watching the changes at Billy Reeds over the past several months. The positive changes with good service, friendly staff and new mangement has proven to be successulf. I have heard there is a new name change ahead with a Cigar Room, a new Wine room and plenty of room to dance in the lounge on the weekends. Keep it what and I like the waterfalls outside.

Food quality
The food has definitely gone downhill since it opened a few years ago. The quality is worse and the prices are higher. The food on the happy hour menu also tends toward cheap, poorly prepared items that taste better once you've had a few drinks. I don't recommend Billy Reed's anymore.

gimme one good reason and i'll turn right back around
That other post had me thinken. I loved this place when they first opened, a chicken dish that was to die for. I have returned about 4-5 times since to order the same thing, and it sucked all around beside the cute lil baldy magic man. Poor service, and not so tasty chicken that once was..Makes me oh so sad..

Must be a great eatery
Hello, my name is Billy Reed. Here in Michigan we're a long way off from all the good eats and drinks offered at Billy Reed's place. Why not come up with some sort of contest where all the Billy Reeds in the USA might get a chance to eat and drink at our namesake dining spot. Cheers, Billy!

Service
My wife and I recently moved to Portland and were very interested in Billy Reed's after hearing about it. The house magician, Adam, is great. The service on the other hand was not what I had heard it was. I don't know if the restaurant is going through some changes right now or what. All I really know is that I am willing to give it another shot. I will try anything 3 times.
