BarFly's Review of Blitz Southeast (Ladd's)
For years, Blitz Ladds was nothing more than a sign. Rather aggressive sign, we suppose, though Ladd’s Addition, the most precious of all close-in neighborhoods, has long deserved an ordered strafing. Alas, seems to have been just a marker for a long-gestating Southeast outpost of same-named Pearl block-filler, whose hubris seemed ever more tragic as the scope of the project ever enlarged, architectural conceit resembling a summer camp mess hall for Viking middle managers.

To everyone who has been in and had a bad experience I APOLOGIZE!. I have read all the reviews across the net, and many were spot on. We have changed many things here in the past 2 weeks and are looking to change more. The drinks are stiffer, the beers are a better selection, the dingleballs hanging from the ceiling are gone too. I added a few more tv's. We are changing up the menu, adding vegetaian options and using local sources.I got rid of the previous managers who,in your reviews not the right people. The best part is we extended our hours open till 12am Sun-Thurs and till 2am. We also have Happy hour for food and drink everyday 4-6 and again 9-cl. You have a concern ask for me,Tim.
This place is pretty damn cool. They have wi-fi, i'm here having lunch right now as a matter of fact. So far so good.
It was my first visit on Saturday, It was packed!!! They have a crap load of HD T.V's broadcasting quite a few different games, the food was much better than I expected and the service (considering how many people were there) was pretty descent. The drink prices are really good as is the selection of beer. The space was amazing with all the bar games you can imagine, including ping pong. I will certainly be back for round two.
Clean, fun, great food and attentive, fun waitstaff even when packed for a game. I don't even watch the games but go for the casual atmosphere and great food! Try the buffet!
Used to be a decent, mellow place to come in and play some pong and have a drink. Last couple months energy changed and it is quickly going downhill. I think the new manager has totally screwed the pooch. Could be they aren't making enough money for the owners and he is getting pressure, but sure was better before. He and the head waitress? and a couple other servers walk around with a negative attitude that wreaks of desperation. I've been in several times when bands were playing and it was so loud I thought my ears would burst. Same with movie night. Usually the sound is turned up when someone is trying to cover a low quality product, but here it may be just management not paying attention. The food is ok, but definitely on the high price end for what they serve. Ping pong tables are great and there are usually people to play with, tho the better players can't play on weekends now which is weird, because I liked the challenge and free tips they offered. Now they aren't allowed to play and I don't want to join their league which seems designed for only the very few best players to have a chance to win anything. The shuffleboard is cool. Mostly I just think something is up with the management. It feels very uptight in there nowdays and I'll not be supporting that corporate stress. I'll go elsewhere for a cold beer, a decent game of pong and a more friendly atmosphere. Too bad as they had a good thing going, and great potential. I would at least suggest they consider getting more stable, less uptight managers and maybe deciding what kind of bar they want to be. Feels like they want to be uptown white collar when they are in a more blue collar regular hangout. Whatever. Good luck.
I came into Blitz Ladd's for two reasons. First, I recently had a fun evening playing shuffleboard at Blitz Pearl. Secondly, I read the Barfly listing which mentioned a weekday Late Happy Hour from ten-till-closing. Unfortunately, my evening in Blitz Ladd's never played-out as planned, since any group which happened to wander past the shuffleboard tables felt compelled to hurl a few pucks without committing to an actual game. Of course, it isn't management's fault that God made as many idiots as little green apples... As for the budget drinking part of the plan; that was a farce as well. Upon questioning, the bartender asserted that Blitz does not have a late Happy Hour on any day of the week. Oh. I see. But, being a friendly lass, she offered our micros "at the Coors price", so we got happy and ordered two rounds. When we got the bill, it turned out that "the Coors Price" was four dollars a pint. Ouch. I chose to pass on any further discussion of Blitz' pricing policies, but vowed to avoid this establishment in the future. Not a moment later we were shooed out the door during their early "mystery closing"; a real crowd pleaser...NOT! In closing, I should add that no less than three other parties inquired about Blitz' hours and specials, and no one came away either enlightened or happy. If I were managing the place I would get over here to Barfly and read a few reviews. Portland has plenty of bars ready and willing to snap-up the people who walk out of Blitz shaking their heads.
Been in a couple of times, never left feeling like I wanted to come back. The only reason that I have is because the friend that I go there with likes it due to the long shelves of booze. For some reason he really digs that!
My most minor complaint: the place closes down too early, even when there is a good amount of business going. I can understand if you're dead, but c'mon make some money honey!! I tip well, but am less inclined to sign over my paycheck when you are turnin' the lights off on me and pushin' me out the door at 1am.
The service is mediocre. Not engaging. Could care less if you were there or not. Like I said: "I tip well!" I am also an a good-looking girl that is in the industry, and very friendly and approachable, but for whatever reason the bartenders here don't seem to want to chat with my party and I when we come in. It's not an issue of being too busy. . . more like they just can't be bothered.
I'm going to open myself up to criticism here and announce that I drink like a sorority girl, and love my tictacs! I like them a certain way though, and even though I told my bartender my 3-simple instructions, time and time again they couldn't seem to get it right?!
Okay, so basically I am not a fan and I don't think they could do anything at this point to win me over! But if they wanted to try, it would be staffing engaging people with good customer service skills. It's great that they hire with no exp. (I assume), but at least try to train properly. Tired of seeing them chat amongst themselves when slow, and run around like chickens when busy!!
Cheers!
Place reeks of having too much money, a desire to keep opening bars, and no personality. The bartenders call everyone "Sir," which might be ok if I was lounging at the Benson, but this is a sports bar. And in my ten plus years of hanging out in bars I had NEVER seen a bar that stacks all the credit cards together, in absolutely NO ORDER whatsoever. When a person asks for their tab, a bartender asks what color the card is as they flip through 40 or 50 cards, making it obvious that they've never thought of a rolodex or any other system based on an alphabetical order. Quite strange and amateurish. I'd also echo the comment below that they seem to be incredibly understaffed. Wasn't worth my time.
Good:
This place has nice walls and a very spacious surrounding... if you are there for sports there are a great number of TVs spread out fairly well strategically for viewing (will get to this a bit more on the ugly)...they have 2 nice and free (the long/real ones) shuffleboard tables as well as ping pong... there is a very nice selection of booze and a great number of taps...the servers are pretty courteous...
The Ugly:
This place cannot handle a crowd at all... the kitchen is waaaayyy too small to accommodate a packed crowd... This resulted in the breakfast food being horrible and mistakes were made on orders... when they were sent back they came back stone cold...
The Advice:
You guys advertise yourself as having the Sunday Ticket. However upon arrival patrons quickly learn that you are a Cleveland Browns bar. Nothing wrong with sports bars being dedicated to a team; but this does not mean that you should have well over 50% of your TVs dedicated to one team. Particularly when said team is horrible and not even close to being local.
We were there with a large group last Sunday and we saw people walking in and walking out one after another when their team was not on TV. You have a large room with a huge projection TV. This room is where you should house the "Dawg Pound" (apologies to the hipster quotient that do not grok this reference) and you should allow the rest of your remaining patrons enjoy their teams in the rest of the bar (with perhaps one or two TVs interspersed through the bar showing CLE losing).
Also the rush that you experienced in the morning and then the tremendous easing and exodus you experienced after 1:00 will continue all year. Because the great majority of the games are on in the AM. You should increase your bar and wait staff greatly during that time.
I won't bring up the fact that you do not serve lunch until 1:00 because given the fact that your kitchen is so tiny it may just be physically impossible. However in the long run this is going to hurt your business too.
Anyway we will be back in on a Sunday morning in October to see how things are going.
Best,
beav
PS: I went in once on a weeknight once and the place was fine.
I've been to Blitz a few times now since the last time I posted a review here ("Great things come to those who wait" on Aug 17), and I'm amazed at how different my experiences have been. Service has been superbly spot-on!
I'm guessing that my Aug 17th server was either having a bad day or was just simply terrible at waiting tables. Throughout my visits to Blitz since that August evening, I've had great service. Servers are attentive, good humored, and offer tasty seasonal beer recommendations.
And, as always, the food is terrific. My personal favorite: Blitz Club. A combo of chicken, bacon, tomato, arugula & swiss. Mmmm.
The Blitz is fast becomming THE best ping pong hang out in Portland..! John, the guy in charge, efficiently responded to customer requests for better lighting and nets and this place is rockin'.. Great music keeps the energy up.. Kitchen aromas and cute friendly waitresses inspire aesthetic appreciation.. The drinks are a little spendy.. Some kind of updated message board for drink specials would be nice and save the endless questions to the busy wait staff.. One of the cleanest bars around also.. All in all a very pleasant, open and comfortable place to visit.. And come on down for the ongoing Thursday ping pong tournaments..!ing affirm
Vast Aire is the name of an MC out of NYC, but those two words can be applied to this place as well, only negatively.
With high ceilings, wide walls, a useless tier, entirely too many televisions, and a 13 minute wait on an early Tuesday night (there wasn't even a game on!) for a white russian combined, equal a pretty big zero.
As a side note (totally subjective): Blitz seems totally out of place in this neighborhood. The one downtown makes more sense, but they water down their drinks, so in truth, the whole franchise gets a large boot to its grill.
...and by wait, I mean wait a Very long time. Admittedly, the food was absolutely amazing. But the server left my husband and I salivating in our booth without A menu -- and without so much as a nod of recognition -- for far too long. (Oh yes, and only one menu was brought to the table because additional menus were nowhere to be found within the sparsely populated restaurant.)
After completing a scrumptious meal, both of us sat in the booth unattended (and thirsty) with empty water glasses. It took about 20 minutes before we were able to get her attention. She eventually came over to us, delivered our check, and FINALLY refilled our glasses.
The kitchen staff, on the other hand, pushed out top-notch food without delay. The Black-and-Blue Turkey Burger was incredibly flavorful, delectably juicy, and perfectly cooked... albeit a little too salty.
The terrific food and great atmosphere will definitely lure us back here again! We'll just have to hope for an improvement in service.
This is a must try bar for the East side. It's huge with pool tables and table shuffle boards. The food is awesome with an amazing selection of pizza, gourmet burgers and sandwiches. Of a nice variety of salads. I attended their opening night and was able to sample a lot of their food. It was all fabulous and the wait staff very friendly and provided quick service. I tried a couple cocktails and they don't skimp on the alcohol either. Enjoy!
