BarFly's Review of Candy
Formerly "Mercato". It is rumored that that on the weekends, they only allow customers who are 26 and older, which is somewhat novel. Also, pizza served late.
Dancin' with Djs Thu-Sat starting at 10, no one under 26, button down dress code enforced, seasonal sidewalk seating 12+ HDs Open from 11-close

I dont think that the age 26 to get in thing is true.... A group of us went ther after our company party. Granted mostof th gr was n thei 30's I am 22 ad my boyfriend is 23 eot in without a problem (I was lookin' pretty good that night though LOL just sayin...). Allthoug there quite a few older people. I guess maybe it's a place directed to an older croud with the mentality of Dirty. Either way... I got in and had a great time :)
I am from Vancouver, BC, Canada. In my opinion, we don't have that great of a club scene, but I would have to say that it has completely beat Portland bar none.
To be honest, my gf's and I didn't expect too much going into Portland. But we had asked several people in town and they had all recommended Candy, saying that is the most happening "place to be" in Portland's nightlife.
I'm sorry, but going to a restaurant/bar and grill that has its lights turned off, disco ball turned on and a DJ, does not make it a club. My gfs and I walked in and walked right back out. We didn't have much expecations, but it was ridiculous. Trashy people... ladies dancing on barefeet... the tv's did it for me and we had to leave.
Ended up at 915 after.. which was comparible to a trash club in Vancouver.. but 10 times better than Candy...
im not sure what this 26 years and older thing is people talk about..i see many people younger than that and im 21 and I got in..
I went there yesterday for happy hour, which is awesome! Three of us had 2 drinks each, and plenty of really good food for $30. Amazing! However, I'm not quite sure what they're thining with the decor. It looks like a carefully decorated cocktail lounge was usurped by a sports bar owner. Seriously, what's with all the flat screens? It totally ruins the atmosphere of what is otherwise a very posh upscale looking venue. The cheesy novelty of the touch screen monitors in the window boths definitely attracts a certain socially inept contingency. Who goes out to a place like that to watch the Simpsons??? Are people so incapable of being wtihout a TV?
I'm not giving crap for only spending $200 - not my point at all, and sorry if it came off that way.
I just thought it was funny that he thought a place like that would roll out the red carpet for such a mind-boggling sum as though that's the most anyone could ever fathom spending on clothes.
Honestly, you're more than 1/2 way there if you pick up a pair of chucks, a t-shirt, and a pair of Levis. That's the "outfit" I'm currently wearing, if you're curious. :)
Jeeze, Anon, how could you say this place is for "D-bags" and then proceed to give a guy crap for spending only $200 on his "outfit?" Sounds like Candy might be your kind of toolbox after all.
Obviously this place is too exclusive for most of us. I think it's humorous that they enforce a snazzy dress code and then try to lure you in with $3 pizza. Hey folks - if ya want some REALLY cheap pizza check out Captain Ankeny's Well. You could probably get in without wearing pants.
I do like the "no one under 26" rule. More places should enforce ridiculous rules like that. Also "no baldies" and "no Canadians."
OK - first off, this place looks like a total toolbox. If you don't get why this place is for d-bags then you probably are one.
Still - to the guy who complained that he spent >$200 on his outfit and got turned away: $200 isn't that much for (at minimum) pants, shoes, and a shirt. Second, men don't wear "outfits".
Good luck, and maybe upgrade from The Gap, big spender.
I just moved to Portland and Candy seems like my kind of place. The crowd dresses well & the female host was friendly. I only have one problem, I can't find a direct website!!!
I have heard good things about Candy's Night Club. I haven't had the pleasure of attending the festivities just yet. But future plans are looking more and more positive. I heard Candy's has a pop'n clientèle plus the atmosphere to back it all up. I hope from all the positive chit chat from loving friends, that I will have a time or two to never forget. So until then, Keep it pop'n and keep it real!
Even though, I spent over $200 on my outfit, the girl at the door didn't like it. She proceeded to point out my lack of fashion sense in front of my 5 guests that I brought to this rathole, and she said it loud enough so the whole line could hear. I did not enjoyed being schooled by this jerry-curl douchbag in front of everyobne, so my unfshionable self took my six single female friends and we went to AURA, spent a lot of money, and had a lot of fun.
Hope Portland spits this CANDY into the gutter where it belongs.
I went there last night and was impressed by the excellent service. The waitress was friendly and efficient. I was a little surprised by the young crowd because I was told it was 26 and up however, we still had a great time!
I recently relocated to work for company in the Portland area. My wife and I enjoy the nightlife and regularly eating out. We've tried a few places in the Pearl, one being Candy.
Upon arriving at the door, the bouncer was very short and to the point, definitely not an overly friendly welcome. We overheard a conversation another door man was having with a gentleman who was not in "dress code". He was offered to pay a cover charge to buy his way in. That said, we did not have to pay to get in.
The interior looked nice, almost like a trendy place you'd find in a bigger city. The PCs were a nice touch, especially to us Techies. The waitress was friendly and helpful.
The food menu was comprised of Americana favorites like burgers, pizza, etc. We passed on the food. The drinks were OK, nothing special that you can't get at any other bar.
The bathrooms were generic cafeteria looking bathrooms. My wife, a designer, was especially surprised. It seems like they ran out of funds.
As the night progressed, the energy in the room increased as the DJ started playing. The dancefloor filled up quickly. There was a variety of music which noticeably appealed to women, my wife being one.
Overall we had a great night and would go back for the nightlife but probably not for the food.
I am a cocktail waitress at Candy.
The food menu at Candy is being expanded for the summer season, and there is much much more than Pizza served late night at Candy, with full menu options!!
Wednesday is Mojito Madness, with great prices on our signature Mojito menu. - the guitar player on Wednesday is Ian James, and he will be releasing a new album soon.(I'm Glad you enjoyed his performance NikkiJ)
For a limited time Thursdays have Ketel One "Summer Slam" cocktails at AMAZING prices!
I'd like to clear up our policy on weekend nights. It is 26 and over after 10pm, however this decision is at the discretion of management and the door men. It is about attitude and presentation. If you are well dressed and have a good attitude you will get in. We have a lot of regulars who are under 26, but they are mature individuals.
The crowd at Candy has been really fun to serve. I have loved working for you while we all dance to DJ Azim's beats. I look forward to meeting more of you on upcoming weekends!!
Candy was fun at first, but definitely went downhill fast. I've been there a few times; however, last night was my last. To make it short, the front asain door man was horrible. He offended several of us in our very large group. Seriously guys, why would you offend your customers who are about to spend a lot of money at your establishment?.... Because of this we left and went to Departure at the Nines. Way better class than this place could ever be. I know a lot bars only last a few years, but i'll now be surprised if this place makes it to it's year mark.
It's too bad because I recommended this place to several friends and clients of ours. Now I know I shouldn't.
What a joke! This place smells of cheap mens aftershave! Food sucked. The bartenders sucked. The concept sucks. Just what we need in Portland - another reason for the fatasses of P-town to get fatter! Other than that, I really liked it.
I hit up happy hour on Wednesday night with some friends. There was a guy who plays the guitar on Wednesdays who was absolutely amazing. It was definitely a nice way to relax after a long day and I can't wait to go back again. The food was yummy and the mojitos were great!
Went there with some co-workers Friday night. We landed there about 10pm. I had a good time, and it was a cool place. Our server ( Renee ) was awesome and put up with our bullshit. Out of the 5 guys that went, no one had a bad thing to say!
I have been here twice and enjoy the older, employed crowd. It is nice to get away from all the douchbags, and blackout drunk under aged girls that you find at other bars. The staff was very friendly, and professional. It is an all around great place. If you want to get away from all the 21 yr old crowd check it out.
I went there after being blinded by the large screen advert display. (isn't there a law against that in the Portland? Should be)
I was disappointed by the overly trendy "ultra lounge" vibe that has been played out over and over again. Can't someone come up with the next new thing. The Pearl doesn't need another "u-lounge".
They claim not to let anyone in under 26yrs after 10pm (wink wink: if you are a 21-25yr old female - you'll get in - I did!). However, if you are an under 26yr old guy - forget it. My male co-worker was not let in. So what was the mix inside? Older guys and younger girls. I already have a dad - yuck! Cheese-y
My coworker told us that this new lounge opened up in the same building as Mercato (across from Blitz: Douchebag). We decided to check out their happy hour due to BarFly's "$3 pizza, $4 burgers 3-7pm Monday-Saturday" post. What we found were plush booths with touchscreen laptops, a soft, ambient lit room covered with red lasciviousness (not a real word). Our happy hour burgers were absolutely perfect with the accompanying green bean fries. Easily the best tasting happy hour deal in NW. What was more shocking: their friendly staff and EMPLOYED clientele. This is a great place to take your fellow career minded people who aren't afraid of the button-up shirt.
