BarFly's Review of Captain Ankeny's Well
It’s far from perfect. A featureless spot with pizza inedible after more than ten minutes in the hotbox, suburban families winding down after mornings spent pacing the adjacent waterfront and lighting more suitable to trauma units … still, Captain Ankeny’s is about our favorite bar. Cliché, true, but a watering-hole’s charms really do come down to the people serving and enjoying the drinks, and Ankeny’s staff - friendly, expert, attentive as you’d wish, tolerant as you’d need - caters to an enviable sampling.
As designated parlor of the rock blocks, it’s a none- more-comfortable respite for suburban Goths meeting pre-concert, rawk casualties strategizing after-hours, scenesters’ early-evening porn downloads or the more respectful straightjohns fleeing Saturday Market travails. And, some mornings, as early-morning revelers and those yet to taste slumber cheer on horse racing or work the crossword puzzle with a singular bonhomie, Ankeny’s seems the friendliest clubhouse in all the land.

I was there Saturday night and did not have my phone, the girl behind the bar said "we don't call cabs for people anymore" WTF!
i was there when you called. it was @#$@ing Friday *night* what do you bloody expect ... she was serving people drinks!
You probably called during a busy time and the bartender was already swamped and didn't appreciate being interrupted and needed to get back to her work. Prospective employees always seem to call during the busiest times. You'd think experienced servers would know not to call during the lunch rush, happy hour rush etc. but they always do. Don't take it personally. Best time to inquire would be when the bar first opens.
Called this bar on June 24th to see if they were hiring bartenders, the girl that answered the phone was very rude and hung up on me. Ridiculous, thinking about calling the manager about this.
I really do love this place. Summer time we sit outside sipping our yummy beers, grubbing on some not so good pizza. Perfect. Mmm Mac and Jacks!!! Love the old skool rocker portland vipe that seems to be disappearing into thin air. I tried their pasta and it was amazing! SERIOUSLY! Its just a good place to meet up with some folks for happy hour and enjoy Pdx.
Nice spot for pre- or post- just about anything (we've been coming here before Blazers games for a couple years now). Good proximity to MAX and tons of other downtown hijinx. I don't understand the editorial reviewer's repeated reference to suburbanites (actually I often fail to understand much of what the editorial reviewers are trying to say), this place seems pretty Portlandy to me.
Good drinks, good bartenders, good happy hour and daily specials. Pitcher of Jubelale and a slice = nomnomnom.
not one of my favorite bars but apparently they now have PBR for 95 cents Mon - Thurs from noon to (i think) eight.
We have been there twice now. The first time we went to some chain restaurant near Borders Books and had such a bad experience that we actually left (pretty rare for us). We started walking towards Burnside and stumbled across Capt. Ankeny's. The food was spectacular. We had fettucine alfredo, a bleu cheeseburger and some soup. The guy working there was friendly and gave spectacular service. The second time was during the Rose Frestival the other night. We made our way through a crowd of drunken sailors wandering the streets and arrived at Capt. Ankenys. We had a couple of drinks, fettucine alfredo (again) and a deep dish pizza (wow!). There was a skinny blonde woman working the bar and she made us feel like we owned the place--even brought a bucket of water outside for our dog. What can I say? This place rocks!
Bryan "The Bad Boy of RC" Dunbar? Peg likes that guy, he drives his RC car with more attitude than the Bryan "The Tiger Woods of RC" Kinwald.
Hi,
My name is Bret Dunbar, and I love Great Pan Pizza!!!
If you are in Portland, you owe it to yourself, and your friends, to stop in and have a 7" deep dish pizza at Captain Ankeny's! It is simply the best, with the freshest ingredients, and the best beer selection, of any pizza place in town!
No Kidding! I take all my friends there, and they have ALL been very impressed.
While you are there, say "Hi!" to John, the owner, and tell him what you think of the pizza.
He loves to hear kudos... ;-)
Happy Eating...
Bret
