BarFly's Review of Coasters Bar and Grill
My dad had his favorite neighborhood bar—and this joint looks exactly like it. Coasters isn't a dive, it’s not ironic, nor is it a place for slumming hipsters. Locals gather here for cheap, agreeable food, stiff, affordable drinks, and a little good conversation. It’s the kind of place where pictures of the wacky regulars are framed on the walls, and the owner herself is usually out back BBQing up the day's food special. Awesome retro beer case, chuckle-inducing tchotchkies, and fab wall paneling round out the décor. The overall vibe is cozy and welcoming, where everybody knows your name (or will soon—for better or worse).

It used to be a nice neighborhood watering hole. Great for lunch. Now you must order a full meal before you can even order a Budweiser or wear uniforms suggesting you are a US Postal service worker to even get a smile. Plug the juke box with Michael Jackson or offer the bartender a nostalgic gift with Coca Cola trademarks before you can even think about getting service. I donít know how many times she walked past us and never once acknowledged our presence. Maybe she saw I had a fifty and she couldnít break it. I just donít know.
I've only been in the neighborhood for about a year, and have only recently started heading over to Coaster's. I'm a fan of grungy local bars, and rarely take issue with bartenders who have an "attitude". The ladies at Coaster's do not have an "attitude", they just cater to a... select clientele.
The people who complain about poor treatment obviously deserved it by conveying some sort of primadonna persona that NEVER fits in a bar like Coaster's. Go spend your money at Tube or - if you insist on pretending you're "slumming it" - BOG. Coaster's is a blue-collar establishment for average, work-a-day folks who don't own messenger bags and only like bands who can play a kick-ass cover of The Georgia Satellites' "Keep Your Hands to Yourself".
But I have two problems with Coaster's:
1. I've yet to be in the place when there is music playing. There's always just the TVs on, with one of them barely audible and the other on "mute". It feels more like a U-Haul rental office and less like a bar when the only noise you hear is an automatic dishwasher and Sportscenter. I suppose I could just go over to the jukebox and play some stuff myself, but I always get the feeling that would upset them somehow.
2. It's a bar, not a casino. Although the customers all appear to be loyal, long-time regulars who all know each other way more than they probably should, most of them just sit at the lottery machines pumping money into Oregon's infrastructure. It's like some sort of quasi-gambler's purgatory in there. Creepy.
I've only been to Coaster's a small handful of times, so I'm sure that I've missed lots of fun nights. I'm definitely planning on spending more time there before I really start to think of ways it could be better. There's nothing I hate more than trying to change a local watering hole, because it inevitably leads to an influx of hipsters to show up on fixies and order round after round of PBR tall boys. Ugh. Then they'll replace "Big Buck Hunter" with "Galaga" and that'll be the end of it.
Oh, and as a general rule, if you're not yet 30, that means you're still in your twenties and really haven't been drinking that long. Strutting into a place like Coaster's, delivering a bunch of grief to the bartender when she cards you and acting like you're a "pro" by bragging about how fast you can slam a drink only reinforces how young you really are, so don't go around giving bartenders sh*t when they ask for your ID. If you want my advice, you should ditch the Chairman Mao hat and stop hanging around the places where elephants go to die.
Coasters is my neighborhood bar that I can relax, drink a few cold ones, and not get hassled- bartenders are always watching your back. Owner- Bob, is open and listens to your suggestions and has a big heart- he cooks an awesome steak dinner in the summertime for an unbelievable price- you must sign up to get in.
Bartenders might throw you a bit of shit, but all in good fun, they are all good spirited ladies, and want to give you your hearts desire... that's booze! They aren't terribly happy about serving food at times due to the fact there is usually only one staff person at a time... so if you are hankerin' for a burger or anything that isn't deep fried, get there well before 8pm.
Hell, we can even throw a big birthday bash here and they'll help with snacks, let you bring in a karaoke machine (if you're into that kind of thing.) It's home away from home..frills include huge TV and a few smaller ones, pool, pinball, big buck hunter, mega touch, golf and one of those music machines that you stick your money in and it plays your choices.
Nope, you guessed it... I'm the type who can see through the bull shit smile and fake boobs just for bigger tips... this is not a place for that.
Maybe it is because I spent the time to get to know everyone. Maybe its because I am not so concerned with being catered to or because I have some sort of self-delusional sense of entitlement because I wear skinny jeans and Vans.
If you want someone to stroke your ego, this is not the place to go. If, on the other hand, you are an friendly person with a good sense of humor and a need for a drink, some pinball, pool, or Big Buck Hunter. This is it.
Tuesday's 2.50 burger night. Wednesday steak nights during the summer.
A staff of ornery bartenders makes this place what it is. Fun, relaxing, and never pretentious. If you want flair, go to Friday's. If you want good drinks, and a great local bar, go to Coaster's.
Well, definatly not Jason. I can only imagine why you are unhappy with your service. I am a firm beliver in "get what you give" and with that sunshine personality that you bring with you everytime, my previous statement stands. It is differnet for all of us, since your wife doesn't work there anymore, but that doesn't give you the right to trash the hard working girls that pledge theie loyality to this bar. I have been a patron of this bar for far too long, but the reason that I go there is the great people that work there and the fact that everyone knows your name. There is always someone to strike up a conversation with and it is a great place to grab a drink or a quick and cheep burger, so I encourage all to stop in and give it your own assessment rather than listening to all the rants and raves of others.
Coasters is a fantastic place to go, filled with inviting bartenders who cater to my needs. I have always enjoyed the great selection of music and the antique jukebox adds to the ambiance. I have lived in the neighborhood for the last several years and have been gone for a few weeks but returned tonight to my favorite bartender who welcomed me back with a big hug!!! I can not imagine a more comfortable and inviting environment to relax after a long night at work. They also just build a rad new patio!!!
this used to be my neighborhood place. i liked it and always had fun and friendly bartenders. in the last month i have had less than friendly help. first was no biscuits and gravy were to be made. second was last night i was overcharged, and when trying to figure out what i was charged for according to "t**a" the shitty bartender with a bad attitude. it still didnt add up to what she said. i was told to sign my bill, leave her a tip and get the "fuck out". i used the C*** word in response to that. when talking to the owner this morning he seemed to not give a shit. i no longer live in the neighborhood and go out of my way to stop in there and spend my money, never again. the place has gone downhill, it is staffed with burned out bartenders that are more concerned with smoking and playing video poker than customer service.
We met up with the same bar wench! Hostile crowd for a Thursday night with people arguing over the pool tables. I went to the bathroom and the door was unlocked, found three chicks in there doing ???. Left immediately and we had still not been served. Won't go there again unless itchin' for a fight.
Coasters is a decent neighborhood bar. The owner is awesome. He's a great cook, a great guy, and a great businessman. However, there is only one consistently nice bartender on his staff. The other two waiver between rude and downright hostile. The food, for the most part, is good, and same with the company. Prices are average. Coasters is a casual, down home type of place, except Mom is a little disgruntled. Dad's right on, but unfortunately he's not around as much.
So I have an affinity for dark, smoky, hipster-free pubs. Coasters is a bar I drive by all the time because I live in the hood, and it always appeared to be my type of place. Not so. My friend & I walked in with the hopes of grabbing a quick round while waiting for the pizza we just ordered down the street to cook. Upon walking in I noticed this old troll behind the bar eyeballing us like we had just risen from hell. No matter, I actually prefer bartenders who do not angle for bigger tips with a short cut tube top and lots of silicon. But when we reached the bar, she was quick to greet us with "you better have your ID's". Not a "hello" or "whadaya havin'"...just a curt ID request with far more attitude than need be. Whatever, I know the gub'ment is all over establishments that do not card, so we gladly complied and pulled out our drivers licenses. Me, being the proud owner of an out of state ID (why give the government more money than we already are forced to do?) almost expected a little bit of an inquisition even though I am nearing 30, so when she huffed and puffed about it a bit I was ready with a quick line "Honey, when you see what I order, and the speed I take it down, you will be convinced I am not under aged". Cool...seemed to get her approval, she gave it back and moved on to the next one. My friend then handed her his authentic Oregon State driverís license. She proceeded to eyeball him extra hard and barked "this isn't real!!" which anyone who drives a car in this state would know how real it truly was. Then she flipped the license over and started bitching and whining about the fact that he had some tiny little sticker on it. She actually started lecturing him about how illegal it is to do such a horrible thing. At that point I got pissed and said "you know what, fuck it, we just wanted a quick fucking drink...obviously there is no such thing here, so fuck it, and fuck you, i'm out..." We turned around and left, and will never return. Any place that employs people like that will never get my business. Fortunately, we cruised down Powell to 25th and found a bar that knows how to treat people, and were able to get our drink on.
This bar does have that 70'sjukebox thing goin on but it also has a pinball machine! For us 'older' hipsters this was way fun. Pool tables looked ok.They have an outside deck that is great for summer night sippin. Not so smokey and cooler.
