BarFly's Review of Ducketts

Unpretentious joint in the space that formerly housed Pshaw. In it's confines you'll find an ever rotating customer base of PCC students, neighborhood con artists, and regular Joes. Excellent backyard patio with underused auxillary out door bar.

Great place to drink & not by surrounded smug idiots

Ok, Ducketts is in my neighborhood and is my go to place to sit and chill, unwind, or just get smashed. Barfly's review is pretty accurate. The drinks are cheap, the food is decent. Lots of games if that's your thing. The place is a real dive, but every is very chill and friendly. Even for Portland. Not that fake surface friendliness, but geniune chill people who will talk, laugh, and occasionally buy everybody at the bar a round of drinks.

Now, I felt compelled to write a review due to the guy complaining about the treatment of bands or whatnot. I went to a good amount of the shows last summer and to the one that guy played at in particular. Not gonna name the band, but basically they were a bunch of smug hipsters. They're everything this bar is not. I'll leave it at that.

The regulars here are great. They aren't a bunch of scenesters, they're just people from all different walks of life. You can look or dress however the hell you want in this place, nobody gives a fuck. Whatever and however you do, it's cool. English is your second language? Cool. Got brown skin? Cool. Gay? Cool. The only way you'd feel out of place here is if you're one of those types who constantly thinks about whether you're better than other people. Most of the customers live here in Humboldt. This bar is just a mix of the people you'd see walking down the street on any given day. Unpretentious, and friendly if you're willing to stop, smile, and say hello.

TREATMENT OF BANDS - DON'T EVER FUCKING PLAY HERE - IT'S NOT WORT

This place was reasonable at one time but has since turned into a piece of shit. The bartender/owner at Ducketts has the worst attitude when it comes to bands playing at his bar.

I play in band with two ladies and when the drummer of my band went to ask for drink tickets, he didn't believe she played music and wouldn't give us any tickets. Then, convinced since I was male, he might respect me, I went up to ask if I could have drink tickets for our three members. He told me that he would do it later and that the other bands hadn't shown up to the gig. I then corrected him and pointed out where the other bands were - standing in front of him in the fucking bar. Again, he said he was waiting on one band to show up and was going to give out tickets at his leisure. I tried to convince him that all the bands were currently standing in the bar because I had just talked to all the members of each band, but I guess he thought I had a dick for a mouth.

So now we have this sexist asshole of a bartender that mostly pours pitchers of beer telling bands who aren't paid that they can't have their small token of appreciation for playing at some dive? Why then even offer drink tickets? It wouldn't matter if this was a nice place to play, but it's not. It's a concrete bunker that is mostly empty. The only people who show up are the tweekers that use the poker machines.

Finally, when the guitarist of my band talked with the bartender, he asked who else was in our band. She pointed to the two other fucking people who had already asked for drink tickets and said they were in a band. He begrudgingly handed over three tickets. When we finally read the fine print, we were informed that we could receive FOUR WELL DRINKS OR DOMESTIC BEERS - AT HALF PRICE! What the fuck is that?! Why not two free drinks? Why not one pitcher of beer? WHY HAVE FUCKING DRINK TICKETS THEN?

With the harassment and tension level at an all time high, we left and hope to never have to go back to this failing business again. Expect nothing from this shitty rotting cesspool.

cool place

i was house sitting for one of my bartenders and was in this neighborhood so i checked it out saturday. apparently i just missed their official grand opening on friday (6/5). the bartenders were cool and the beer priced reasonable. i may have been a little drunk but i swear there was a pool table on the back patio too. later at night they had three bands play (free). first one was actually pretty good. if i lived in the neighborhood this place would definitely be a regular hangout
