BarFly's Review of Duff's Garage
This garage business may be a little misleading. Duff's looks like a garage, somewhat, from the outside, and God only knows its southeast industrial lineage, but the set dressings suggest Happy Days dinner theater and the rock on tap remains purely of the roots variety. There's jazz, as well, and swing and the more AOR-tinged Americana, and, upon occasion, rockabilly acts will bring out the cool kids to drink and dance and mingle uneasily with the middle-aged regulars.

Love this place ! The owners Jon and Jennifer are terrific, they bring it a great variety of music from Country to Rockabilly, to Blues, to Surf to 60's Garage. The regulars are a mix of 20-somethings to 50-somethings enjoying the music, camaraderie and dancing. This has also become a hang-out for musicians taking an occasional night off from playing.
My favorite band at Duff's is The Buckles. Incredibly talented musicians playing the best variety of dance music. Covering artists from Merle Haggard, to The Beatles, to Buck Owens, to Ricky Nelson. - Always a great night of dancing.
Duff's Garage: ...one of the best roots-rock/ Americana rooms in the city, a place where you can hear the rockabilly of Cave Catt Sammy one night and hot jazz from the Kung Pao Chickens the next."

Candy Kane came all the way from LA and had to pay for motel rooms, gas, and meals to do this Sunday show. My wife and I gave up our day off to do the show and took our 3 year old out to Gresham to a babysitter in order to do the show. The complainer comes along and grouses about having to pay $10 cover for a national act after the show was over. If it were a problem why not choose not to come in and just go home. Do these guys pay half when they go to the movies? Do they pay half when they go out to fancy dinners? I think not. I gave him all his money back ($20) he then offered to give me back $10 if I would stop complaining. I accepted his offer. Then he promptly informed me he had no money! After I had just given him $20 back! Talk about a cheapskate! Jon
We went to Duff's tonight to listen to Candye Kane and she was wonderful. Unfortunately, we missed half the show because Duff's website specifically states "unless otherwise noted, all shows start at 9:30". Nothing in her show listing stated otherwise, but she started at 8:30. We tried to alert the owner(?) manager(?) of Duff's so he could correct his website and he basically handed our money back (which we did not ask for), harangued and yelled at us, gave us an enraged speech about complainers and the difficulty of making a living, and told us to never come back. I was more than surprised and tried to explain what we were trying to convey, but he flat out refused to let me speak. We like the music there very much, but have never been so badly treated in an Portland establishment. Wow.
I'm new to Duffs' and the music has been good every night I've gone! Regular Blues / Swing on Tues and *hot* Rockabilly acts 1 or 2 x a month. It's obviously a venue for live music focused on Americana. I love it! For Portland, it's nice to have a venue where a few girls can hang out and not get "assulted" it's chill and has a cool smoking patio. I have friends that do and don't smoke. But all my friends like good music.
It's easy to dance and there are more watchers than dancers, perfect! I hope it stays around and that they keep those acts coming. Duff's is a place I can always bump into people with simlar interests in Rockabilly / Cars/ Dance and Vintage style. My friend is from South Carolina and loves it!
I saw a revue about pretentious, rockabilly has always been like that. But I've seen all ages mixing at this place, which is cool!
Small but great place to hear some great blues, country, rockabilly and surf. Good mix of age groups. Never a dull time. For sure a place i call home.
I went for open mic (I forget which nite) several weeks ago and had a great sandwich. The tunes were good and a hip atmosphere. Seating filled up fast so I'd get there early if you want more than a standing drink. I'll swing by again sometime.
I haven't been yet, but the reviews really vary. I'm heading out there on Thursday to catch a friend jam on his piano. He's fabulous and I hope this venue will be receptive to his style and the crowd he draws. We'll see, won't we.
Duff's is an excellent place for live American music. Several of the best small shows I have ever seen were here. I don't know how they get the talent, but they do: Pete Anderson (Dwight Yoakam), Redd Volkaert (Merle Haggard), Cindy Cashdollar (Asleep at the Wheel), Dale Watson, not to mention the best local music! Great acoustics. Super-friendly staff. Good, cheap food and drinks, plus a huge bar selection. My new favorite hang out...
Alright, so you what do you get when you cross a place in the SE industrial district with Rockabilly bartenders? Duff's. Given, the people are a little pretentious, but if any bar in Portland could bring back the rockabilly scene, they would be it. Except, so far it hasn't really worked. I mean, last time I sang there I saw people from my high school hanging around. I went to high school in Vancouver, WA. Any questions? Just try harder Duffs! Advertise to a RB crowd. God knows this town needs a bar that caters to us!
well , big suprise , duffs garage is not actually a garage ! it's also not a gay bar ... but that didn't stop me . i found a classy gent and introduced him to the "lounge" in the back of my toyota pickup . my truck has become an important part of my quest to have street sex with the men of portland . duffs garage was a success .. next stop kennedy school . see ya in the soaking tubs boys !
