BarFly's Review of Duke's Country Bar & Grill

Ginormous cowpoke palace with basketball court-size dancefloor, a mechanical bull parked on the patio, multiple bars, a well-stocked gameroom, efficient service, and a line out front on any Friday or Saturday night. As is the new 'tradition' at most country clubs, the music stops, and the hats come off for the Pledge of Allegiance and our national anthem. Arriving after 9pm will ensure you avoid such unpleasantries - it's a fun place, despite the maudlin flag waving.

Who Cares
Who cares about all the bullshit that happens in the bar. Dukes brings in the ladies and has good drinks. Its not complicated that I go there to get drunk and get layed. Fights and drunkeness happens. ITS A BAR PEOPLE. Maybe most people need to stay home and they wouldn't have to worry so much.

Dukes is Great.
I'm a very large man that loves to line dance. This place is great. I got into the place about 8:45. I left my cowboy hat at home so I paid the 3 dollar cover. I was a little hungry so the cocktail waitress offered up a chicken fried steak. It was great. After eating I moved to the dance floor and had a great time. The women for the most part were very friendly and fun. I'm 5'10" and weing 360 and I didn't see any women bigger than me. I even had a couple of hotties ask me to teach them a line dance. I saw zero altercations and everyone seemed to be cool and having fun. I live out in Hillsboro and am glad I made the drive to Dukes. I will become a regular.

Stupid People
to the idiot that is bitching about the DJ and his speech
if you don't like being in a patriotic bar or a bar that supports our troops over seas then go somewhere else. we can all bitch about being over there but that does not seem to work. and our troops are just doing their job. they were told that they have to go over there. so in all respect we might as well support them because they are troops from the USA wether you agree with them being there or not.

now for the dumb aunt that is bitching about her niece
were you there? NO! so quit making assumptions about what happened because I would bet everything that i have, that your niece is not telling you everything. whos knows, maybe she deserved to get the shit kicked out of her.

punks at Duke's are funny
DJ GravylegsEven tough for the most part I think anything that has to do w/ Concept Entertainment is pretty much for the Alpha Gamma Dumbfucks,I most say one of the drunkest, and also funnest night's I can
recently recall was a trip to Duke's.Picture this,my sorry, skinny, tattooed ass in my normal ensemble of fresh wife beater, dark blue Dickies, old school Vans, and a pressed rag hangin out the pocket. These door guys took one look at me and I knew it was on.first of all it's not hard to say the staff are all fuckin hot. It's what they pay them for.Drinks were actually pretty potent, but the best damn thing that they had at the time was that damn bull! The fine lady of the controls promptly asked me to come forward ahead of others.Needless to say w/in seconds I had figured it out and she had jacked that bitch up to 10!I've never that close to knowin what it's like to fly!All in all I did'nt mind standin out like a sore thumb.I did see more moose knuckles, camel toes, and the occasinal cougars, then I had ever in my life..Fuckin Rad Place!Bring it on again....I'm always down to hang w/ the rednecks.

get a life
all you idiots that are saying bad things about dukes. get a freaking life. if you were treated bad or someone you knew was treated bad, maybe there was a reason for it. i go to dukes all the time and everytime i'm there all i see is the staff doing their jobs.......kicking out the drunks and problem starters and making sure that they treat people respectfully. if they disrespected you or your friends in such a way that you are upset by it, shut up and go somewhere else. sitting here ragging on dukes isn't changing the things that have happened to you or your friends. going somewhere else will change that. so don't sit here and rag on dukes because of something you didn't like. shut the fuck up and go to a different bar.

what rednecks want

Reviewer: Noisycow said
"It is like they sat around a conference table and said 'what will get the rednecks in the door and keep them coming back."

My response: They DID!! That's why it's called CONCEPT ENTERTAINMENT. Their next 'concept' is an "english pub". If you want real country, support your locally and privately owned country bars (that is, if they don't go out of business before you get there, like BC's did).

I love that bar...
Duke's is my home bar. I'm there quite a bit, and seem to know most of whats going on around there. I don't remember the 15 speech in front of the flag talking about Iraq, but you know, I think it needs to happen more often. This is a country bar people. There are a lot of former and current armed forces personel that frequint the place, and even more people that support them. If thats not what you are looking for. Go somewhere else. Go to one of your commie hippie bars on Hawthorne and talk about how bad our country is. You are free to do that. Just don't walk into a country bar and expect us not to be patriotic, and supportive of our government and our troops. God Blass America and those willing to stand up for it. --Nopo

female altercation
For the record... I may hypothetically be that so called bouncer that "escorted" the girls back into the bar... now from my recollection (hypothetically)
1. they weren't outside, they were sitting in the pool room waiting for their ride...
2. From what I hear, assuming I know Duke's altercation policy is that.... one of the parties leaves the premisis, while the other waits inside, then the other party is escorted out where they are directed to leave the premisis as soon as possible.
3. Because of the hypothetical cooperation of the forementioned party, Duke's may have offered free passes in order to keep their business because... just maybe they weren't considered a future threat?
4. From what we were all told, and just maybe because we always, at all times (assuming I work for duke's, which i don't), have security outside there were absolutely no altercations that occured after the initial altercation.
5. Assuming that we may have been the first security members, or customers or whatever to see this altercation, in retrospect the altercation probably happened for less then 5 seconds. If anyone knows a security staff that can difuse a fist fight in under 5 seconds in a packed bar you let me know.
6. If we actually were there that night, we would go out on a limb and say Duke's did these girls a big favor by letting them wait for their ride inside anyway, because from what we understand about Duke's, that's not the normal policy... All parties in a physical altercation usually are asked to leave pronto.
So since this is all "hypothetical" and we probably weren't there anyway, and we probably don't work for Duke's as it is... this all may not be true...
But I'd be willing to take a huge leap of faith and bet money that what we've stated is the truth. But remember, hypothetical is the operative word in this post.

Let's Get Real...Everyone
Look, firstly to the people that are bashing the ladies, it's really not fair, especially since you probably don't know them. It's always a tempting thing though.

To the woman who is so irate about her niece being "assaulted". I have been in the bar industry for quite some time in many different types of venues. I frequent Duke's, because they have a good atmosphere and a friendly competent staff. Sure, sometimes you may have to wait for a drink a bit, because they're 4 deep at the bar, but don't people usually want to go where there are other people? And yes, on occasion there are some rowdys there. I don't particularly like rowdy people, but it's a country bar and I EXPECT that it is going to happen from time to time. The few actual altercations I have seen at Duke's have always been handled quickly, professionally and accordingly. In my 20 or so years in the industry I have never seen a fight that was not in some way the responsibility of both parties. Only crazy and unbalanced people hit other people for no reason. It is not a bar owners responsibility to call the police. The bar is not pressing charges on behalf of an individual and if an individual wants to press charges that is up to them. I am sure if your niece at any time actually requested that the police be called they would have been. My opinion and it is just that is that the problem lies in what your niece is NOT telling you about her involvement. That is almost always the case. I'm sorry it happened to your niece and sincerely hope she is okay, but what are the chances that she is "innocent" in this. And it is standard policy in an incident in almost ANY bar or restaurant for that matter to offer a customer that you feel you may lose...something. I have many many times told customers that have had a bad experience of whatever kind (including altercations) to come back in and see me in particular and I'd buy them a drink. There doesn't seem to be much difference here. Just my 2 cents.

Oh and my review of Duke's is that it's a great bar, but I wish they had some more live shows and a smoke eater or more of them if they do have one.

Cheers,
Jon

Not safe
Be very careful when going to the Dukes Bar & Grill at 14601 SE Division. My niece was there with a girlfriend of hers when another patron, who was very drunk, unprovoked, suddenly began hittting my niece in the head. The bouncer, not having known that my niece was the innocent party, threw them all out intro the parking lot. Upon realizing his mistake, he escorted my niece back inside and assured her that the attacking girls had been a problem there before. The same girls that were allowed to drive off in a very intoxicated state. However, the manager did offer FREE PASSES! At no time did he offer to call the police to report this felonious assault. My niece now sufferes from a severe concussion. and the owner of this "law-abiding" establishment cannot seem to be able to return a phone call!

We realize that people get out of control while drinking. And stuff happens. But to put the victim in further danger by throwing her out with her attackers is unforgivable. But of course, the owner cannot even deighn to return a phone call explaining the actions of his staff.

Be careful at this Dukes Bar & Grill. . It is apparently their practice to just throw out assault & battery victims without reporting a felonious assault. On the other hand, maybe they will give you free passes!

Two of the ostensibe owners names, I was told, are "Dan Lenzen" ext 107 & "Jeff Plew" ext 105. The corporate number is 503)222-4174. Of course, perhaps these are incorrrect numbers since my msgs were not returned.

Again, be very careful, as they seem to have a problem with certain types of customers.

No political statements required
The bar is rowdy and fun at first. It is a given that when you are at a country bar they are old school republicans and such. More respectful than most bars. Courteous. A 'thank you maam.' All that is fine and good as long as you keep the party enjoyable.

However ... having to sit and listen to the pompous DJ stop all the dancing at midnight so he could give a speech about how great Bush was and what a great job we are doing in Iraq ... it went on for almost fifteen minutes ... while he posed in front of a 16' US flag ... asking for prayer and such ... geez. Now I know why Country Bars started really fizzling out in the mid-90s.

Patriotism is one thing, stupidity in running a bar is another. Funny that this place is owned by the same people that own the Lotus and Barracudas. It is like they sat around a conference table and said 'what will get the rednecks in the door and keep them coming back.'
