BarFly's Review of East Chinatown Lounge

Sleek lounge features an eclectic array of turntablists, drawing a pleasantly hip crowd six nights a week. Spendy-looking interior is as slick as they come, yet perfectly comfortable - a nice change in an artbar. Extra-neato bathrooms! Extensive selection of specialty cocktails well-prepared by superior bartenders. Belying the ritzy look is a supercheap pan-Asian menu, a $4.50 well (fresh-squeezed juices galore), and no cover, ever. Deejays at 9pm. Wheelchair friendly. Open 5pm till late Mon-Fri, 7pm-late Sat. $2.50-5 menu, $2 well & draft, 5-9pm M-F. Tuesdays: Throwback Tuesdays w/DJ Izm. Wednesdays: Atom 13. Thursdays: Auditory Scupture. Fridays: DJ Izm. Saturdays: Nik Fury.

nice place. not enough room
We went to East on a Saturday..it was packed wall to wall. Somehow with only one bartender and a cocktail waitress they managed to get us our drinks quickly. I usually never try 8 dollar specialty drinks but the bartender swore by the red lantern, I had it and then I had one more. In my oppinion there wasn't enough seating and the music was to jazzy to relax. As we started to leave some lower tempo hip hop came on and thats what was needed the whole time. The drinks were good and the bartender was cute and very efficient. Next time we go back though I wouldnt mind a place to sit

Hmmmm
The atmosphere was wonderful, the doorman a saint, but jesus once we got in the service was bad, just bad. I want to like this place but c'mon people. We sat there at a table, no one took our drink order, and trust me it was not crowded. I think we waited a good 20 min. before having to go to the bar. The bartend was not a friendly guy at all...I believe he grunted out..."wadda ya want?" not sure however. Look you ARE in the customer service industry, please drop the hipper then thou shit and show us a decent amount of courtesy.

East on the DL
Yes I did love the atmosphere and the cheap drinks and for that matter the beats to help wash it down, The non smoking bars is way under done in Portland and I am syked that someone does a H.H and all this combined. The food is very cheap for what you get, the staff seemed nice enough for Portland. What I mean by that is, just mellow and not overly friendly but always seemed to be there just when you want them to be. A friend spilled her drink and the bartender gave her a towel and a fresh drink. We all have been places where that won't happen. I am telling all my friends to make it a regular spot. See you there.

yes
east has an awesome atmosphere.
the beer selection is small but respectable.
service could use a little bit of help.

the "i-pod u-pod" idea (you can come in monday nights and play a short playlist from your ipod) sounds awesome, too.

YOu butfucking losers
Heather rocks that place like nobodies business. She's not the anit-christ (but I hope she likes to be naughty). She also got her rescue badge by saving my friend from the bathroom after locking herself in.

Our experience on 2/2/06
Well........my friends and I have always loved this place for the atmosphere and the great food and the awesome service we usually receive, but this all changed last night 2/2/06 when we had horrible service by Heather. She was extremely rude from the very beginning, never smiled, did not check on us just all rude. Heres the story. My husband and I arrived before our friends and settled into a comfy corner as we always do. I went to use the restroom (the music was blaring in the bathroom so loud that it honestly hurt my ears) when I came out I noticed that my husband was sitting by the bar and was still drinkless as Heather walked around and pretended like he was not there. When I came up she finally realized she had customers (by the way it was not busy at all there was only one other couple there at that time) without a smile she gave us our drinks and we went back to the table. A few minutes went by and our friends arrived as we sat there and waited and waited and waited and watched Heather go back and forth with out even noticing us, one of us finally flagged her down. She came up and took our order and after a long pause our drinks and food arrived. She came back not to long after that and picked up the plates and glasses without asking if we were done (wich we were not we still had food in our plates, drinks in our glasses and forks in our hands). As i saw her walk by i flaged her down one more time and asked what happeded to my drink and she insisted that i finished it and when i finally started getting upset she rudely said fine ill bring another one. When i got my second drink it tasted like super salty tobasco on the rocks and my friends called it. I just left the drink alone in the middle of the table and waited till she came back. She never came back and checked what was wrong with the drink or if we wanted anythig else. As we sat there and waited for our bill for 45 minutes we kept getting ignored completely (by the way at that point there were 4 tables filled up and she had help from another worker). My husband got up and went to get the bill and when he asked for it Heather rudely snapped at him and said "You are going to have to wait, can't you see i am busy?!!!", my husband was really angry by that time and my friends and i were just appaled. We paid and left. Heather needs some customer service classes, she is in a job where she does not have a choice weather she is going to have a bad day or good day, when customers come in, it is supposed to be a GREAT day no matter what is going on. Heather you are a rude person and because of you alone my friends and I do not want to return to East, we love the place but it is really not worth our trouble when you are so rude and ruining our moods. I work in customer service also and i know how hard it can get but the last thing you need to do is show the customer how you feel, it is your JOB. Thank you.

A Quiet Place for not much cash
East is one of those places where you really need a watch, because it seems like the same time of night, no matter when you arrive. The atmosphere is low key and fairly intimate. There are only 5 or 6 swivel chairs lined up at the bar, a few booths, and an ultra modern lounge with couches and chairs that look like they came from IKEA. The music makes itself known, and varies from techno to a hip-hop mix, but you can still hold a conversation without having to yell in someone's ear. The $2 drink special is fabulous, and incldes Guinness pints. The staff is very friendly, and due to the low-key quiet atmosphere, will know your name after you've gone for a week straight. A great place to hang out with friends after work.
