Ate lunch here recently. Cobb salad along with the 12 IPA contest sampler (#3 was amazing and warranted a full pint). Salad was excellent - loaded with egg, avocado, bacon, blue cheese, and fresh baby greens. I personally prefer the more laid back daytime atmosphere here when it's less crowded. Nights, from what I've seen, can get busy and loud. The pool/game area off the side of the bar gives this place good variety inside. Prices seem a bit high for the ales ($4.25-$6), but I haven't had a bad beer here yet.

Pros - excellent beer selection and super friendly and cool female (dark haired) waitress

Cons - dickhead bald as fuck bartender who ruined my visit and is the reason I will never go back

Give me a fucking break, and grow some balls already. Just have to love the Concordia Neighborhood Association (supposedly) warning the owners against it---'oh my, the terrible element it'll attract, and what about the children? the CHILDREN!!!'

Well maybe, just maybe, the heathen machines will finally attract some charm, possibly even some fucking soul, into the joint and the Subaru drivin', 'I send my child to Montessori' proclaimin' fleece-clad crew will retreat to the Kennedy School where they belong. Or Boulder, if we could be so lucky.

Game room with video poker soon to be installed at CAH in the new addition. It's tucked away ala Horse Brass. Should not be a problem for anyone 'cept nutters who like to loose their cash. I may not have all the details exactly correct(not an employee...), but children cannot enter the Game Room area, so parents have no need to fret. Draught selection is still the best in PDX. Food is still great. Dining room is still "kid friendly" like before. Please continue to SUPPORT a NE neighborhood beer geek haven/heaven!

There was some crazy guy yelling across the street in the bus stop. At least two buses went by and left him sitting there. Wow beer in the sun. What a great selection. Tasty food...

What the hell is going on inside this bar? Theres nothing in there. Eat outside on a sunny day and theres nothing to loose here. Love it......

I've been here a few times, usually as a retreat on the way to or from the Kennedy's School's long-absent novelty. Alas, every visit to CAH has found it dead, quiet and a little uncomfortable. It's got an impressive tap list and bottle cooler, but lacks polish just about everywhere else. I'd fully expect a place like this to spring up in any number of western towns with a taste for rugged-ish yuppie money (think Flagstaff or Loveland or Missoula)-- except the local color never wanders in for a pint.

The bartenders have always been bored, seemingly to the point of being half asleep. When a CD ends, get used to sound of HVAC fans wooshing over the sound of absolutely no conversation whatsoever. Kinda depressing. I suppose it might be more lively on weekend afternoons, but why chance it?

We totally enjoy the changes made since new ownership. We enjoy the tv's and the great selection of beer....and we love to play pinball and free pool too. We agree food times may be slow, but we love the food. 22 handles of good beer are nothing to shake a stick at either. We hope they don't go the video poker route, but we may still go there. Our kids love to go to the Ale House, and they are kid friendly. As far as neighborhood bars go, this one is the best. We are soo tired of the crappy food and beer at the Kennedy school that I doubt we will ever go back. It is what it is, pretty good food, and a tasty selection of beer. We miss our PBR, but for good beer and food we will always go to the CAH. We even go there when we leave the kids at home. Who has better fries anyway. Just my two cents, Matty

I live near Concordia Ale House. Used to be a good regular haunt. New management has changed the feel of the place. It just doesn't feel the same anymore. Beer selection is still very good. Bar service can be crappy depending on who is tending the taps. The whole talk of a game room, makes me think they new owners just don't get it. I'm not going back for 3 months, then I'll try it one more time and see if they worked out the kinks.

From what i've heard, the Concordia Neighborhood Association has sat down with Jerry & Jason. I think an agreement was made for no video crack to appear at CAH. Personally, i could give a shit. They got it at Horse Brass tucked away in a corner. No big deal really.

The World Class draught selection and killer food is why you stop at CAH. If you don't "get" the Ale House concept, you prolly never will. Anyway, i hope CAH remaines a beek geek (guilty, as charged) destination in NE. But you obviously gotta support the place to keep it thus. (& keeping/hiring servers who really know beer don't hurt either!)

I think I understand what you were talking about and I must have been there the same night as you, there were 3 fat guys (extremely fat) and 4 skinny twit-ish looking fellas, 3 on laptops, one playing obscure crap on his iPOD for us all to suffer through. :) And 2 blond girls (one of which was me), I am betting you were the other one. I tried it again since the new ownership was in place was looking for the needed changes that will probably never happen. Add a little character to this place and it might be worth while. But when your lease is 10k a month you need to sell a lot of beer just to make the rent. ONE big plus, is they have not succumbed to Video Crack...yet.....................................

Dylan, you can't compare Roots, Amnesia, Lucky Lab (whose beer sucks), etc to Concordia because they're *brewpubs*. Amnesia serves, well, AMNESIA's beer. I'd think a beer snob would be able to figure that out.

The appeal to Concordia is that it has tens of dozens of beers from different breweries all over the world (many of which are from the NW). Want a brew from Amnesia AND roots AND Terminal Gravity AND Ninkasi AND walking man? Don't get in the car and do a tour of Oregon, sit your (not too big but not too small) butt down at Concordia.

I'm a stout fan who went here with two other beer fanatics on a Wednesday. It wasn't crowded, but it also wasn't dead, and we had a very chill time drinking some excellent, excellent beer. They have some good stuff on tap that is definitely not for wimps.

They also made nachos for us, by our request, and nachos weren't even on the late-night menu. Props!

New owners, no worries. The 21 constantly rotating taps still deliver. Still killer Ribeye Steak and mash, etc. etc. etc. too. New felt on the free tables, 2 plasmas (c'mon, you watch TV at home too) new carpet/new sign out front. If you live in the NE neighborhood and love Beer please support. You never miss your water 'till it's gone.....

I am a big beer snob, however I have found many many more places other than this place that are far superior, Roots brewing, Lucky Lab, Amnesia... This place looks like a tacky cheap bar minus the chain smokers. I agree they have a good selction of brews, but with no ambiance, and half hearted beer ignorant bartenders how can you expect to be a real beer snob hangout? That is probably why only fat geeks and skinny dorks hang out in this place and why it has already changed ownership one time in such a short span.

The Concordia's food is above average, though it might be a little slower than average getting in front of your face. The ambiance is a bit lacking, but it's got a great wood hued interior. Plus, it's non-smoking if that's what you're looking for.

As far as the beer goes it has by far the best Belgian selection in Portland, with only Higgin's in the same league (although Higgins is mainly about bottled Belgians), and a nod to the Blue Monk. The Horse Brass is minor league with regards to Belgians. A smaller draught selection, with maybe 20 taps. However, each is chosen carefully. They have the best of the small micros (Walking Man, Ninkasi) and anything Belgian they have on tap is worth trying, and some of them are probably one of only a handful of kegs shipped to the States. They have Belgians on tap you can't even get at the breweries that make them, or even the home country (i.e. Cantillon Fou'Foune).

So if you're looking for a nice comfortable place to relax and you really want to try some amazing beers, the Concordia is a no-brainer. If you love Belgians, than why are you reading this. Get the directions and GO NOW!

Agreed, this place is not for frat boys or swill drinkers. It's a local neighborhood ale house with an incredible selection of craft and specialty beers. Their taps are constantly changing, which keeps bringing me back. They always seem to have something from Terminal Gravity, Lagunitas, Walking Man, He'Brew, and Anderson Valley on tap. And about 20 total.

Their walls feature local artists' work, and the pool tables are almost always available (and free). The food is pretty decent, but your typical pub fare: burgers, sandwiches, pasta. Several vegetarian options are available too (nothing for vegans, though).

If you're looking for an interesting and different beer selection, this is the place. If you're looking for a hipster bar to chug back PBR with your frat buddies, please go somewhere else.

This is a chill place to hang out. We came in with a large group for a birthday and played free pool for 3 hours on a friday night. The bartenders know a lot about beer and very little about mixology, but that comes with the territory. Never got too crowded, and the service was fine. Food wasn't great, but that's not what we were looking for.

everything i loved about the ale house is dead. these reviews are old and out dated. there was a change in kitchen management, food is not as good, there has been a change in barstaff and the bartenders are not as nice as they used to be. one more thing. if your getting a special promotion/discount, double check your bill. it most likely is not on there.

I traveled the country 270 of 365 days last year. I always seek out the best beer bars where ever I am. Without a doubt, Concordia is by far the best! No other place can compare with freshness, obscure variety and absolute quality. Concordia is my favorite beer bar - period! If you, like some of the other reviewers on this site, don't like this place, you're obviously ignorant about the best of what the Craft Beer World has to offer.

After reading all these reviews, I had to add my two cents...

Lets' start by saying, this is a great pub. Food Great, Beer Great, groove great....

What needs to be presented is the fact that Concordia Ale House is exactly what it states......AN ALE HOUSE! This is for serious Beer Drinkers, not for the Budmilloors Crowd and definitely not for the PBR people. This is a hardcore beer pub for serious beer people.

Now, it you don't like beer.... That's cool. I've brought my kids to Concordia and they're treated with respect and are give crayons and the like. These people are have no attitude towards anyone.... Maybe the attitude is walking IN the door and not behind the bar...

So, if ya don't like REAL beer, they have sodas too. Plus, the food is premium Pub grub! Best fries in PDX along with one of the best burgers.... Prices and very reasonable.

Now onto the beer! The best, "BEST" beer selection at any pub in PDX, period. The Rotating 20 taps are always interesting and unique, different than anywhere in Portland. The bottle selection is top notch cover every know (almost) brewing nation in the world, but only the selected best of most interesting. Bartenders are very knowledgable.... They know far more about a beer than it's color, you know what I mean!

This place is the treasure chest of beer in the area and I think Concordia should be appauled....

The new set up in the now called Concordia is pretty sweet.Lots of great beers and a good crowd too. Sometimes it actually gets crowded but the staff works to keep up with it ....I suggest grabbing a stool and seeing for yourself....

I went to the concordia ale house for the last time (my 3rd) yesterday. The service is always slow and pompus (you work in a bar, you are not that cool.) i think that everyone that works there was dropped one to many times on the head as a child. yeah they have a great selection of bottled beers, but why go to a bar for bottled beer. Horsebrass on belmont has 20 oz pints for less than you pay for a 14 oZ pint at concordia, the service is better and the food doesnt taste like they've done something to it in the kitchen (which they do). DONT GO TO CONCORDIA if you respect yourself. take the trip to horsebrass instead. you'll be glad you did.

This place is, without question, the BEST pub in Portland. I find the ambience to be a perfect compliment to laid-back approach to world's finest beers. I have no idea how they continue to get these tasty and insanely rare beers on tap, but I hope they keep it up. Gnomette, Three Philosophers, La Folie, Gouden Carolus Noel, any number of Walking Man brews, Oake Aged Yeti, Duchesse de Bourgogne, Drie Fonteinen Oude kriek, La Rulles Triple and St. Bernardus 12 are just a few of the most memorable. Higgins quality, while admirable, pales in comparison to Concordia's Bottle selections like Achel Extra, Arctic Devil and Gouden Carolus Grand Cru of the Emporer. When I read negative reviews of this place, I have to chuckle because those who write them obviously have no clue how special this place is.

We just moved back into the neighborhood after a few years and things have really changed. We have discovered our new favorit place to be the Concordia Ale House. It has something for everyone good food, great beer, knowledgeable staff and dinner specials that are allways changing! We recently met the owners and they are an enthusiastic young couple. We are glad they took a chance on our neighborhood. We will be back for sure!

Great addition to the NE neighborhood. If you are not into Quality Ale/tryin' new things, this ain't your place. Little bit sterile cuz it's brand new, but have a pint or to of Eisenbock and the killer spicy Calimari and you'll be warm 'n fuzzy all over. :)

OK! This place is so NOT cool. Crappy food, the atmosphere of a cheeseball cafeteria in some Casino in like...Sarnia Canada... Good beer selection, but hell almost everyone has that now. I could give a shit less if they have 5 million different bottled beers from around the world. BEER TWITS (that is what I call them :) are everywhere in this place. Idiots really. I will not go back. Even Mcmenamins is a better bet. Uggggg!

Way up north. One of the best tap beer selections in Oregon. No smoking, but little kids always running around. Never very crowded. If you're a hot babe looking to meet a pleasant pseudo-intellectual beer geek like me, show up during happy hour, and you'll see me at the pool table. Here is my joke: I don't understand why Cheney didn't get in more trouble for shooting that person in the face--isn't that why they impeached Clinton?

I have to disagree with the ambience, I like it. It is casual. Everyone can just hang out around the big bar table in the middle. I find it great for big parties. Which is usually when we attend the ale house. To drink lots and lots of delicious beer. I think the service could use a touch of love. But then again, it could be my friends are annoying and the servers don't like them. Which often has been the case:(

The beer selection is spectacular and the knoweledgeable bartender is immensely helpful and friendly. The food lacks a theme, but is a step above typical bar-food, even McMenamins. The ambiance...makes me shudder. It feels like your buddy's basement bar, but worse. The dining area feels like a Texas-style cafeteria and the bar area is cramped and cold. They need a woman's touch; maybe some votive candles, wall coverings and closed off bathrooms. If you don't mind the austere surroundings then the beer and food will keep you coming back for more.

I live in the neighborhood and love that another pub has opened! GREAT french fries and burgers. Great beer! Amazing selection! I have to say......it lacks ambiance. It's a rather sterile place right now, with sparce tables and bathrooms that walk right out into where people are eating. (my recommendation is that the owner puts a screen or something in front of the bathroom doors so that they are blocked off just a bit). More tables would be good too! Also, only one waitress working the whole place so it was SLOW. It sounds like i'm dissing the place but i'm not...we will for sure be back!!!!

So the Etcetera Tavern has been out of business for a while. But just under three weeks ago a new place opened in its stead- the Concordia Ale House... I saw the new place while driving Tues. night and had to stop in. The staff was very knowledgeable and friendly. The beer selection was awesome (thanks for the samples guys!) I also had a hamburger and fries, which were excellent, and they even made my burger to order (feeling particular- I wanted to tweak the menu offerings a little :)) I will definitely be back soon!
