BarFly's Review of Fernando's Hideaway (CLOSED)
Fernando's is closed, and is now a place called Subterra. But we kept our sweet review up here because some people like to read this old stuff.
Great tapas, great bartenders in the downstairs restaurant/bar, which opens to sidewalk given the weather. Charming restaurant extends into courtyard space at rear. DJ'd Spanish music, latin dancing and lessons in the upstairs lounge Thursday-Saturday. Open 11am M-F (opens at 4:30pm Sat/Sun), closes at 12am or later (2am most nights - tapas served till close). Doubles for regular price (even top shelf!), $3 house wine, $2.50 micros 3:30-7pm and all night Mondays. Mondays: 2-for-1 tapas. Thurs-Sat: Salsa dancing (free lessons at 9pm; $5 cover for men, ladies always free).
Went to the new Subterra to visit a friend who recently started working there. Have to admit, the decor is a little pretentious and overwhelming for little ol' Portland, but I forgot about that as soon as my food came out. It was fantastic, and the happy hour menu is unbeatable. It's a great place to go with friends because of the big round booths, though you might want to space out the ordering of food since the tables are small. Hope it works out for them.

Fernando's was one of my wife and I's favorite places to eat. The tapas were fantastic and the atmosphere was ideal. Truly an 11 out of 10. Not to mention having salsa dancing. But since it's a jaunt (roughly 40 miles) we only managed to make it there infrequently. It will definitely be missed.

Yep...it was a pretty fun place to work, but sadly, the doors closed "indefinitely" at the end of business on Saturday, February 3, 2007. Will miss all of it...absolutely the best staff I have worked with in all my years in the biz. Hope to see some of you regulars around town sometime!!!

The bartenders are great here, they can actually make a Manhattan, plus Tapas are much better fare the the usual burgers and fries. I give this place an 8.

I thought the service was awesome. The only reason someone would rate it a one is because they dont understand that not every waiter has the ablility to be in 10 places at the same time when it's busy. The whole idea of this restaurants atmosphere is to sit down, enjoy a savory glass of wine and eat delicate foods slowly... It's not McDonalds buddy, and it take a real wine enthusiast to understand the culture of eating at an authenic fine dining spansh restarant.

Service really sucked. Took 15 minutes to get a drink and then got a big attitude for bringing up the wait. There's better places downtown.

Moth, that's the beauty of it. It's pretty much a free for all. A rival owner could post a spiteful review. I wouldn't delete it though unless it turned into a battle.
I do agree though. You've gotta be a little more clever, Butterfly. You searched for "Fernandos Portland" on google, landed on this page, and immediately posted a glowing review without hesitation. It does reek of self promo.

Wow. You sure do like that place. Dreams come true there. And endless flow of people just dying to dance with homely old me?
Sounds like self-promotion poorly disguised as a review. It's an okay place though.

This bar and nightclub is great--staff is super friendly (unless you get rowdy) and the crowd is ready to dance. Be warned, if you don't like to salsa, write it on your forehead, because you WILL be asked. Again and again. For those who do salsa--party on! You won't sit down the entire night.
