BarFly's Review of Fez
Imagine Casablanca set-designed by Bobby Trendy. Scheherezazde’s Architectural Digest spread. What Baghdad, in the worst dreams of Islam, could be … given the money. Fez should be Portland’s finest club - a massive ballroom of floor-spanning ottomans and potted palms and dimly-lit Arabian wet dreams - but, ignoring the damnably-eclectic capacity crowds from Friday evenings’ Shut Up & Dance 80’s/Brithop bacchanal, the massive ballroom’s shamefully underused. Two floors of old movie decadence, an excellent sound system and absurdly-reasonable (allowing for stiffness) cocktails deserve constant attention. Tuesdays: Shadowplay w/DJ Carrion, DJ Horrid & guests (goth, industrial; 10pm, free). Wednesdays: Devotion (house, trance, techno w/guest djs; 10pm, free). Thursdays: live bands. Fridays> Shut Up & Dance (long-running ’80s party with popular Disk Jockey Gregarious presiding over the ballroom, and his special guests in the second floor lounge; 10pm, $5). Saturdays: live music. Sunday & Monday: occasional events.
You can't please all of the people all of the time. My favorite thing about Friday nights at Fez is that Greg mixes in a few obscure songs/requests amongst the standard typical songs that, while they may make everyone dance, get repetitve and boring after hearing them for the zillionth time week after week. Exposure to less familiar things is good guys, open your minds a little. As for Tyler's ingorant comments - each week is a little different, that's what keeps regulars like me, who have been coming to Shut Up & Dance for years, still coming every week because we don't get bored. I can personally attest that I have stepped behind the DJ booth to find Greg kneeling on the floor in a rocking-out reverie, totally grooving to the music because he's so into what he's playing. I can also say from my 3 years of Fezzing experience (as opposed to the whopping TWICE that Tyler has attended) that nearly every week Greg asks me for feedback on what the crowd feels like, what I think might get the crowd going - how's the energy on the dance floor and what might make the night better. He gets several HUNDRED requests in a night and does his best to work in what he can that will blend well with the beats he's playing at the time, but he can't play them all. He himself recruits the downstairs DJs to enhance his night, purely in the name of broadening the options for people with different tastes. Give the guy a little credit. He can't always play everything that will make everyone happy all the damn time. I personally think that Cramps song ROCKS, as do several of the ppl who work at Fez, so give Greg a break if he occasionally plays stuff for the minority and not the majority. That just shows much he appreciates and values us, his long time regulars, and isn't afraid to stray from the norm in order to keep it interesting. If you have a suggestion or complaint, write to him on his myspace. He always listens, although if you're an ignorant fuck with nothing productive or creative to say, don't expect your words to haave any impact on the night, because they won't. BUt if you have a good idea, who knows, next week you just might see it come to fruition.

I remember Tyler...
I was playing The Cramps (requested by one of my gorgeous, sexy, red-headed regulars) when he came up to me and yelled, "This song sucks and so have the last 5! Last time I came it was way better!"
If I am remembered for sucking, then I stand firm in my beliefs and aesthetics. Musical taste is subjective and I can't please everyone (nor do I try), but no matter what your opinion of me, I am always willing to entertain any critiques, compliments or insults. If you want to do it directly you can thru myspace (myspace.com/djgregarious), if not... then here works.
P.S. Thanks to all who nominated me for the Barfly awards again this year!!!

Disco FUCKING SUCKS.
And what I saw was fucking weak. Maybe it is just that Portlanders do not have enough bullies. Maybe it is just too temprate of climate.
Whatever it is - you are not tough. Every time I have went to an "Industrial Night" in this town it has been pathetic. Where are the stompers? Where is the new shit? Sure, if I went to an 80s night this would be...acceptably dissapointing. Common, I know you are better than this. Prove me wrong.

i went to the fez on fridays twice now. the first time, about 70% of the music was real good and the rest of it was horrible. last night was opposite of that. it's not just me. you can watch as the dance floor clears out with some songs and starts moving again with the good ones. and the dj clearly never dances or anything. he just sits on his computer in the corner. if he just paid a little attention he would notice what songs people like and what songs they don't like. and i watched people request mostly really good songs that never got played. worst part about last night is the bar area downstairs had way better music than the dance floor upstairs. and there were actually tons of people in the bar loving it while everybody upstairs just stood around. how does this gregarious guy not realize that? maybe his music used to be good. if thats the case, he should go back to playing the same old shit because he sucks at picking out new stuff.

Y'know I *like* DJ Gregarious...he plays some excellent dancy-dancy of a Friday.... and I do *adore* The Fez, the sweeties like Casey at the Bar, or the darling chick at the door ( forgot your name *again*, love, sorry ) , the fun staff elsewhere.......mmm...and...those comfy couches....yum....perfect to sink into.....and that gives me good cheer....*but*....
I freakin' *LOVE* Catalyst and his wild, eclectic...shite-you-never-hear ( but can't help but rock out to ) Thursdays at Red Cap....it's been long proven....to me at least....out of all the dance nights I go to...what keeps me on the floor is the J. Catalyst mix of...what-the-*spork*-ever....**every*** time I make it to an Invasion/Catalyst night....I dance...dance...dance...barely even have time between good songs to grab a gulp of Spanish Coffee...or the more needed *water*.....the man is credited with me dancing off two dress sizes in the last two years....beat *that*! ....better yet...offer me fair price for all the shite Gran got me at Nordies that I'm too skinny to wear these days....lotsa cute goth-y stuff....*shameless self promotion*......

why you gotta be a hater on dj gregarious? get a life, i guess. who cares how someone dj's? what matters is having fun and if u don't like it, don't go. he's still got the best playlist in town. wanker.

I'm not at the Fez on Thursdays anymore. I'm at Red Cap Garage.
As for Greg... he doesn't have the biggest night going, which has been around for like 6 years, for nothing. I prefer Denon and Pioneer. He prefers Mac. The end result is in the DJ, not the equipment.

So ive played the same crap for years, but it seems to work. Then I started to play the same crap via Ipod, seems to work. Soon I will not even be there at all, seems to work.

Gregarious, you are awesome. Who cares how the DJ puts the music on? What matters is that your playlist is intense... The Fez on friday nights, can't imagine anywhere else to be...

I haven't used records at the Fez for about 2 years and ipods since the beginning of 2005. I had kept records there (as back up) when I first used the ipods - this was when ipods were new and sometimes would freeze. Good to know someone named Mo is paying the admission, but not attention. Guess smoking all that bad Mexican pot must NOT be paying off.

I don't mind people who DJ with iPods. I mind people who aim to actively decieve people by pretending to DJ with records. Anyone who knows DJ Gregarious knows he's a total prima donna.
But like I said, the Fez is pretty cool.

I think Disc Jockey Gregarious has adapted very well to the new technology.
And Fez Ballroom is really cool.

The Fez is a stylish little pad. Good lights. Good sound. Good dance floor. Nice 'tenders too. But what the hell is up with fakie DJ Gregarious? Everyone knows he DJs entirely off iPods. Worst still, he actually fakes playing records! He goes to all the trouble of bringing in his "gear" and pretends to cue up the music, but really he's just playing it all off iPod. And he was voted best DJ of the real? What a maroon. Guess doing all the cocaine has finally paid off.
