BarFly's Review of Fixin' To
It had to happen, I guess—a bar named as a Southern trailer park, serving up trashy-to-NW Southern bar food. Because after My Name Is Earl, rednecks are funny, not scary? Right?
Anyway, this St. John’s locale was co-started this February by Portland Monthly editor Bart Blasengame; it is intended as a dive though the fixtures are too new for the distinction so the irony sort of bleeds through the place in a very—shall we say it?—1990s sort of way.
The interior bar and barshelves are pretty utilitarian/unpretentious up there in the St. John’s, the crowd of aging hipster with a hint of a truck-stop, arm-tatted, post-rockabilly vibe seeping in on the night we visited. (Note: we like aging hipsters; it means you’ve earned your goddam stripes.)
Also: the bar menu includes more Ritz crackers than you’d ever expect anywhere outside a Montessori school, including, no shit, Ritz-encrusted chicken, not to mention the Rotel chili and Frito pie. Ah, brand-name Southern trash casseroling at its finest. The Fixin’ To, I think we like you.
Open 4pm-2am Monday-Friday, 10am-2am Saturday and Sunday.
I love this place! Its incredibly dog-friendly, far less dangerous than the other St. Johns bars and if you get food from any of the local food carts you can eat then there while enjoying a drink. Everyone wins!
Love this place. Then again, I'm an aging hipster. The husband and wife (I assume) owners are very nice. Great place to have a few, relax and chow down on decent bar food. St. John's is getting better and better all the time.
Went for brunch, first time there. My gal got bloody mary, which she liked a lot. We both got biscuits and gravy, one vegan, one bacon. Yeah, the bacon tasted better- what'd you expect?, but they were both delish. The only bummer: I got a bowl for $7, and my gal got the cup for $4. Sure looked like the same amount of food to me... maybe a smidge more gravy in the bowl, but both 2 biscuits. ORDER THE CUP. Worth checkin' out. Beers on tap and liquor. Small but decent looking menu.
