I visit Hamburger Mary's at least once a month for their fun drag shows! Seriously, men in dresses dancing around in heels with more grace than I could ever muster... IMPRESSIVE. I brought my mom here when she was in town last month. Crazy-fun times!
The cocktail menu is full of fun drink names like 'the fuzzy teabag' and 'pop-ur-cherry', lol. I've tried almost all of them.
The food is tasty and sinful. I dig the burgers although they're so big I can rarely finish mine. Try the one with bleu cheese, or the one with red wine and garlic. This is the only place in Portland (that I'm aware of) where you can get a deep fried twinkie. Pretty epic... and a deep fried PB&J. Whoa.
The place is gay owned (duh), but very welcoming to everyone. Most times I visit it's about 50% straight people and families. In my opinion, it's gonna be the next Powell's or Voodoo Doughnut for visitors and locals. One of those iconic places that makes Portland as weird and awesome as it is =)
My friend and I ducked in here during a rain storm hoping to grab a burger and a beer. It slowly (!! - ridiculous in retrospect...) dawned on us that this is a gay bar/restaurant. I'm queer but I've never actually been to a gay bar before. Unfortunately, this place is also a chain, kinda like a gay Hard Rock Cafe. There was a lot of stupid shit on the walls and all the menu items had silly names. The food was mediocre and overpriced, the taps were all run-of-the-mill supermarket beers, and there was some truly terrible karaoke going on. This is an awkward space, long and narrow; the layout was not well planned. There's about a billion better places to get a burger in Portland, and while I'm not an expert, I'm sure there are better places to meet guys.
My partner has been to several different Mary's throughout California and was stoked to check this place out. It was pretty awesome. They had only been open a week when we went so business was a little slow but the place looks amazing. It had a great vibe. The staff was totally friendly and the owners were was cool. The owners talking to their patrons is always nice, shows they give a shit! They are doing all kinds of themed nights and a huge grand opening party for Halloween (but you better be in costume or you won't get in!). I will totally frequent this place and look forward to seeing this place thrive!
