BarFly's Review of Hawthorne Hideaway
The owner George said something like this "You know how every server and bartender in this town still just expects to be tipped regardless of what an asshole they are? We don't hire those people." Indeed, the service in this large, L-shaped space is certainly on point. The atmo is a happy medium between dive and hipsteria, well suited to the neighborhood.
Pool x 3. Full menu served till midnight.

This is hands down the best eating experience I have had in Portland. They nailed the Burger and fries, a tough thing to make perfect! It was like someone out of culinary school made it cause it was amazing and for just 3 bucks for the burger and one buck for the fries man o man it was good!
When I'm in the mood for a great drink, friendly service and cheap-ass libations I drag my ass to the Hawthorne Hideaway. A tavern for everyone, really. They're unpretentious manner makes drinking here a wonderful experience. Oh, and for all you peeps looking for a game of free pool, well they got you covered on that as well. If you tip the staff and believe me you want to (they will pour you a drink that you could run a lawnmower with) These drinks are stiff, boys and girls! Wow. Yeah, it's a little smoky on the weekends, but during the day it's a nice place to get a way from all the hub-bub and relax over a crossword. They have a great internet Jukebox for all of you that want to hear "Iron Maiden", " The Carpenters." or " Front 242" . Hipster and gay friendly. As far as prices are concerned, they have a kick-ass Happy Hour. $1.50 PBR's, $2 (strong) Wells, and $2.50 Micros. $2.50 Burgers and $1`bowls of soup. Fuck yeah!
Great place.
The above google map is wrong. It's on SE Hawthorne and 22nd - kinda' like the address says - right in between Hot Lips pizza and Imbibe. Not south of Colonel Sumner park.
PBR is $2, $1 and change during happy hour.
Occasionally, a ton of hot chicks will be there. Challenge them at pool and you will have fun with them.
If I lived in the area I would frequent this place. Great bartenders. Funny and friendly regular crowd. Cold beer I mean very cold! I will be back often. One hint be sure to locate the potty before getting hammered ;)
Sooo. My neighbor works at hawthorne hide away and has been telling me to come down for drinks sometime. I bit and invited some friends along.. as soon as I came in, the tweeter driven sound system was emitting dorm room rock tunes that resonated off my fillings... whats more was the less than friendly "door/bar/ID dude" promptly demanded to see our IDs w/o a smile, nod, or hello.. hey it's the door guy I get it.. I've done the job before.. the basic math skill of figuring out that "legal" age year can give one a migraine.. any way wasn't ready to give up yet.. but wait it's bitchy bartender time.. the guy was nice.. the blonde was a complete bitch (uh, George you might want to talk to her.. she doesn't quite fill the bill of your awesome service philosophy). I guess her business sense was smart but her timing was off, in that, she was discussing the sticker price on cocktails while serving my girlfriend = tacky "these lemondrops are too cheap.. blah blah blah".. she should save it for a staff meeting or maybe if she smiled more?.. I dunno. My friends walk in at this point and I'm ready to bounce.. blondie of the bar comes up with her attitude and demands to see ID's in an 18+ venue fashion.. I asked her how she was doing to try to break the ice.. and nada.. we tried to order drinks at that point but I guess there was no table service.. just a bitchy welcome?.. food service is a hard business.. I know.. but geeezzzzz..at least fake it. Great!
It's my favorite bar in Portland! You've got to love a good bar menu, internet jukebox, rad-ass barkeeps and and $2.00 Miller High Life tall boys. xxxx
They serve Sailor Jerry and if that's all they had going for them, it'd be enough. Bartender is outgoing, uh, extra outgoing actually, that's a good thing. Reasonable prices, good pour, different rooms and now they have free Wi-Fi to go with the free pool.
This is a great, undiscovered bar! Free pool and the staff really are all so nice and cool. Totally comfortable, cool ambiance.
This place is great. The staff is really friendly, and they have free pool all the time! Even though the free pool sign says "Most Nights" I haven't been in there yet when the pool hasn't been free.
Food there is good too, but it is an adventure finding the bathrooms.
Me and my friends have made it a regular hang out. I reccomend!
