BarFly's Review of Hutch
While recent advertising campaign proclaiming the Hutch to be ‘Portland’s hottest dive’ couldn’t be more misleading - it is not, in fact, a dive nor remotely warm - the tavern remains a fine local servicing a dry-ish area and more welcoming than you’d ever expect from the closest bar to a major hospital. Decent food, shuffleboard and pool, a big screen for the game, and wonderful servers draw a continual stream of regulars to the folksy wooden interior. Changes in ownership have slightly raised prices, infuriating those that bring bags of change to the bar.
Now non-smoking. Seriously, it's done in 2009, might as well let it go until then.
Featuring ShanRock's Triviology every Wednesday at 8:00 pm

3 friends and i stumble into The Hutch on a hungover Sunday morning to find a escape in some greasy breakfast and bloody marys. And that was the worst idea, after being in there 6 months prio and having a good experience we thought why not, big mistake. After order the Specail which was on the blackboard, we were told they were out or it, then attempted ordering a menu item and got a excuse of, we're wokring our order... followed by burnt toast, a meal that was no where near appetzing, adn $70 for 4 people later... I will never go back to this place. Horrible.
I discovered The Hutch shortly after returning from Vietnam in 70' That unasuming beer joint all but void of pretension and septic corporate ulcers came to be an old friend and intermittent sanctuary of dark stained wood and lingering tobacco. I quit the outfit a couple years back when i could no longer cypher "The Hutch" from a Gestapo Applebees
I went there because I happened to be in the neighborhood and was looking for a bite and a drink. I really like The Hutch on Holgate, and figured this place would be good too. The BT seemed to resent being there. When I asked for the beer on special she said "we're out of that" as if I should have known. She gave me a happy hour menu, and I realized that most of the prices were the same. You can get a burger with no fries for 40 cents less, not much of a deal. I asked for an ash tray and she said "you can't smoke in here" as if I should have known. I said, "I'm sorry - I just assumed that the big sign saying SMOKING AREA meant you could, just like I assumed the chalk board with today's special beer meant you'd have it". It was cold inside, there were some sweet regulars (like adorable white-haired Bobby at the bar), but the unfriendly service turned me off.
That dude must have this place mixed up with the other location. The Hutch has a place in my heart, as do the bartenders who are quite attentive, quick-witted in that endearing, take-no-shit kinda way, and easy on the eyes. The burgers rock. The place is not pretentious nor does it harbor the unsavory elements of many other dive-bars I patronize (tweakers on the video-crack, slobbering drunkards that should've been cut off hours ago). Becoming a regular here is easy; the regulars are as welcoming as the staff. The head-bartender rocks her IPOD (she has great musical taste). She'll teach you Kanooga, a super-fun house game that includes all that want to play. The shuffleboard is one of the sweetest ones in Ptown! The $10 min. is in effect, but once you get there, it's hard to see why anyone wouldn't wanna stay and drink for a while, thus making $10 seem like an amateur's issue.
Watching the "cool kids" be rock stars (you know the type, working on their moves, wearing sunglasses, etc.) at karaoke was bad enough, but what really sucks is when the server gives your bankcard to somebody else. For compensation, they paid for drinks UP UNTIL then. In essence, I was cut off. I had no cash and that was my only card. I had to walk home (no cab money) and call my bank right away to cancel the card. I had 3 house whiskey + cokes and no money for another bar or gas for my car or money for groceries as the banks were closed on Sunday. Now, almost a week later, I still have no card and getting money out of the bank is VERY inconvenient thanks to my work hours. I'll never go there again.
As a former Sandy Hut denizen, I must say The Hutch rocks. Really, it does. Super cool barkeeps, and though I rarely consume beer there I'm pretty sure it's cold enough. Heavy pours on the cocktails, always. The burgers are gigantic and awesome. I don't know what the other reviewers are talking about here--the place rocks. I'm probably somewhat biased since it's withing stumbling distance of my house, but it's great. Internet juke is OK, but barkeeps'Ipods and MP3 players are far better for tunes. Beware the pool leagues dominating the jike box with lame-ass new country, though. Live music with no cover on Saturdays means they hike prices up a quarter to cover the band's pay, but that's OK by me.
The placed rocked...food was awesome....new chef...new owner knows their shit and the beer twaz cold...
This bar used to be a great place to go hang out, see friends (and lots of old timers), and get cheap beer. Sure, they'd run out of money in the ATM or mini corn dogs at times, but I'd take that any day over the "new" Hutch. I was there one night when the price of nachos went up twice in about an hour (someone ordered some, apparently not on the menu, so the owner (I assume, blond gal) told the server to charge $9.95. Trust me, these were no 9.95 nachos. Someone else saw them come out and a while later wanted to order them and was told they were then $12.95 (and this wasn't a HH change either)! I haven't been back to that cheap-skate place since.
I went back for the second chance I give to most any bar/restaraunt....and the bartender this time was much much friendlier and more attentive. Now I don't mind paying the price for a MICRO but, why must their beer be warm everytime I go? I still couldn't fully warm up to this place, but when in the area it isn't too bad. I ordered a mixed drink for my second round and it was very good and strong! My friend had a martini and they had some band there that was not too bad. they were sort of Rasta meets Beach Boys. So don't order the beer, it is warm. However I suggest the Bacardi and Coke...tasty and heavily poured. Happy holidays everyone!
not nearly as bad as the previous comments might make you think... still a very laid back place to hang out.. sure prices are a little higher but nothing above average... shuffleboard, pool, etc.. lots of seating.. great location!!
The place was too bright and for crists sake don't say "Lucky you it is Happy hour so your piss warm beer is only $3.25." just charge me for it and take your $1.75 tip and walk back over to talk to your friends and ignore everyone else like you were doing when I walked in. This place is overrated.
When I moved to this neighborhood, the Hutch was the only good bar within walking distance from my house. I would go there for the pool, the bingo nights, and the great employees (esp. Chris and Tia). I loved the place! Now it has WI-FI and advertises that it’s the “coolest dive bar in Portland”-what a joke! I won’t be going back there again.
The Hutch has gone under some changes over the last couple years, (new owners, new environment, new menu) and none of them have added anything positive to this well established neighborhood pub. Instead of a place where anyone could feel welcome, this place has turned itself into just another "frat" bar, full of glaring eyes and awful conversation. The menu and bar prices at one point were reasonable but now it's just another overpriced dump. The service is still OK, although The Hutch just doesn't have the friendliness it once had. Highly disappointing!
There still is karaoke, but it sounds awful. The KJ is almost too high energy but would do very well with a decent sound system. Anytime a singer hit a loud lyric the system would completely cut out for a second or two. The system appeared to be a disc player in an audio aparatus merely connected to home stereo speakers and a big screen TV. Not my idea of quality. But the free peanuts are nice.
After enjoying the Tim Freed karaoke show for the past several months on the second Saturday of each month, I was just informed that they will no longer be doing karaoke. Tim's show was the only reason I would drive in from Troutdale to The Hutch.
I'll just save my money and wait for Tim Freed to show up at a new venue with his kick-ass karaoke show.
The Hutch has Karaoke the 2nd Saturday of each month. Tim Freed of "The Tim Freed Show" is great! He is very aware of his singers needs and is well versed as a Karaoke DJ. The new owners have really done a great job of upgrading this neighborhood spot. There is more to come and as a customer I felt really valued! Come out and see them - you will not be disappointed!
