BarFly's Review of Irishtown
In addition to the signs on the C-tran buses that proclaim "ITS THE LAW! No smoking within 25 feet!", there must be some sort of weird zoning laws in Vancouver WA that state
(1) All drinking establishments are required to be located in a completely depressing strip mall and
(2) All drinking establishments are required to provide karaoke.
True, one can quaff pint after pint of Guinness and the affable Irish owner, the legendary Peter Yeates, does generate a dominating presence of authentic authority, but the 'Couv's demographics require Irishtown to branch out from what one imagines to be the stereotypical Irish pub aesthetics. The kitchen serves up a cross cultural mélange of Irish fare (Banger in the mouth!), Chinese, and American Pub grub to the usual 'Couv suspects.
Top 40 Djs, chicken strips, soft tip darts, and karaoke are lamentable necessities that enable Irishtown's survival, so you can't really find much fault there. If you find yourself on the north bank of the Columbia, you could do far worse.

The bartender pours a good beer and the dangerous-looking cook carries a dry sense of humor but everything else is average. The place looks like a typical Van-Tucky bar and the atmosphere is bland.
Their band selection is good and the menu options cover all the comfort foods. It's no Biddy McGraw's and that was clear in the fish and chips. These triangle-shaped boxed fish pieces were without flavor. Nothing was unique about the nearly nine dollar meal and the fries where limp. The sheperd's pie was pretty gottd and a lot of food for the buck. The presentation was incredibly good, too. I was impressed with how it was somewhat similar to my dad's recipe.
Overall, it was not a bad experience at Irishtown. It's a good-sized bar to have a brew with friends. However, stick with the happy hour menu from 3-6. If you're looking to enter a bar and pretend you're in Ireland, head back to Portland.
I a 35 year old Irish guy in Portland just spent the evening at Irishtown Pub, it's a Thursday night and overall this pub has alot of potential. The drinks were more than good, the service was a little slow at the bar only because of the amount of other patrons in line first. I was afraid I was going to some seedy bar thanks to this site, but when I got there, I found open table billards a decent band playing a varity of music. I orderd the bangers and mash expecting a paper plate and soggy potatoes and got a well deliverd and tasty meal and the barkeep had acedentally orderd 1 too many and gave our group the other order. Overall my friends and I had a great time and will definately be back. I don't think much of the previous reviews on this Pub. We'er going back tommorrw, Friday night, for the Promise of Irish Rock and whatever else they play for us maybe we'll se ya there. Eirinn Go Brach!
Well in terms of Irish pubs I have been to all over the world. I would have to say Irish town is an ephic phail. The always adjusting cover time hours for bands I do not care for. That I can live with. The service is just lousy and slow. I simply hate the place because of the crappy service, even slower service with a cover.
You would think with a cover fee you can get more help out there. I had an incident with a date and she was partied out after a few drinks. I explained my situation to the bar and had attempted to order her some food to try and remedy the situation.
Well an hour later, still no food and my date was not handling her drinking well. I think for a bar they would actually give a crap.
Good beer and great bangers 'n mash!! Decent stage area and building up a nice variety of acts! Not the most "pub-like" so I was a little disappointed in the "atmosphere" dept.(sorry) Otherwise a place I would go back to and recommend. P.S. They have real mashed potatoes!
Thats exactly whats keeping most of the music scene out of Vancouver and keeping most of it in Portland. Be willing to pitch out a few bucks you cheapos. At least your hear a band worth listening too. Point given lol. They do have cover charges at this bar time to time now. Good! Good! Good! That spells better music worth opening your ears up too!
So.. being in the industry for years... i have to say Taison (who claims to no longer be in the club) used to run this as Ghengis Khans or GK's to the many! used the be thugish and retarded has now come to be a bit comforting. Irish musica played on weekend with karaoke.. and Korey which i know personallly is now KJing there does superb! drinks so-so, food cheap say hi to pete yeates and crew for Peter for me ;) ... good stop in "couv" no BS and just fun ;)
Irishtown is a very comfortable bar-pub to sit with freinds, listen to music, and have some great food. I am pleased by all of the (free) parking available in the front and back lots....when I go to downtown PDX, I usually have to pay 5 bucks or more.
There is no cover for the music, and Peter Yeates himself is great......and he has been booking other great acts too.
This bar is economical, fun, and I love the Smithwicks on draft......
