BarFly's Review of Jax (CLOSED)
Jax is now closed. Our old review is saved for posterity.
Low-key sports bar really takes off in the nice weather, with roll-up garage doors opening the bar onto the sidewalk, and live bands performing on the rooftop bar (roof often closed for private events, however). Great spot for afterwork people watching. Live entertainment, mostly jazz, occasional cover. No smoking till 9pm. Full menu served till close.

The rooftop was great in the summer, and I liked the roll-up walls as well, but that's about it for this place. It could've been so much better, but most of my experiences there were like Gwen's. No surprise then that Jax closed at the end of Feb. 2009.
Since I work a block away, with any luck someone who can hire a decent staff will re-open the space before too long.
Excellent off the strip downtown bar. Amazing happy hour food, very tasty. Big garage door lures you in and makes the place feel wide open. Rooftop view of Mt. Hood is amazing, can't wait for summer nights on the roof. Great beer selection that rotates quite often. All around great bar. Perfect for everyone.
Took a date to the water front and stumbled by jax on the way to the car. The giant garage door for a door drew us in. Sat at the bar and was instantly entertained by the energetic bartender Marty. Had some cocktails looked over the menu, witch made us wish we were hungry, and ended up on their rooftop bar. Great view, great atmosphere and there was a bar up there also. Loved it an will be going back, again and again.
Three friends and I went to Jax this past Saturday night. Though the location, drinks, food and the facilities were great, we had the worst server and the bartender was incredibly slow and kept running out of the bar to talk to people.
Upon arriving we waited 15 minutes before any server approached our table. The servers were just standing against the bar talking to each other. We were informed after ordering our drinks that it might take awhile because there was a large party in the next room and their order was before ours. Another 15 minutes later our drinks arrived, which was fine because we got the warning but there was no explanation as to why our food came 15 minutes later.
We maintained our politeness with the server despite the slow speed of service. When it came to ordering more drinks the server, in a monotone voice, said "you guys need anything else" and rolled her eyes. I couldn't believe it. With a basically empty bar and her standing around talking to another server most of the time you would think she could maintain a level of professionalism. She just seemed incredibly frustrated to come up to our table which makes no sense because we didn't have any special demands or complicated orders, just some Jack and Cokes and happy hour food.
It took 20 minutes of waiting for our check before I decided to go up to the bar and ask for it. Before I could speak with the bartender the server rushed over to me and intercepted. She said "oh I'll bring the check to you right away." She disappeared for another 20 minutes and then dropped the check at the table. Not surprising, it took another 15 minutes to get my card back. I wish I didn't leave a tip.
Jax ain't bad. The owner i've met is always really nice to me. The jazz played there is a little bit too mellow for me on the few occasions i've stayed for a beer. more of a bebop fan. During the NFL season Bills fans call this HQ ... probably the only "sports bar" thing about this place (it really ain't)
Yeah, the rooftop bar is pretty damned sweet too... The owners are cool, usually just chillin alongside the rest of us. One of my favorite summertime spots.
What a great spot this is, no cover charge to hear great jazz and non smoking as well. The food is really good and the beer selection was very good. I heard a great quintet with a young piano player that was well above his years. The room itself is very nice, dark wood with low lighting and nice art on the wall. I can only think of one drawback is that they have a code to get into the bathroom, and I kept forgetting it. I suppose to keep out the riff raff.
