The service was grate but Starr made me feel so at home with the best drinks and fish tacos to die for. This place is the best sports bar in jhons landing much better than Stanichs ever was the Jolly Roger 2 is a grate place to unwind after a long day at work.
If you go to the Jolly Roger in John's Landing, you may be there to watch one of the numerous sports games showing on any number of their 10+ TVs...OR you may be there to see your favorite bartender. In my case, it's Sunny, who works Weds. through Sat. When Sunny's around, there is ALWAYS fun to be had. The food may be what you would find in most bars (with a few exceptions, of course), but it's great, nonetheless. Try the fish tacos (my favorite!) or the pizza (it's damn good!). Most importantly, bring your pleasant attitude and your smile. You'll always be welcome at the Jolly.
For years I didn't truly get the Cheers TV show. Funny - yes, but this pulled together bar family just didn't equate for me. And it certainly wasn't due to my lack of options to compare it to, as I've been a regular in bars from Portland to Prague, or a lack of family - I've got more than my share. What I was missing was the Jolly II! Finally I GET IT! This crew is amazing and definitely entertaining, the drinks are super cheap and always mixed perfectly (read: stiff), and the menu is small but good (the fish tacos - YUM). Go often enough and you can qualify for a Jolly discount coin. At the Jolly Roger II, everyone really does know your name, what you drink, and how thickly you like your sarcasm laid on. Love these folks, and I just can't get myself to go anywhere else!
I moved into johns landing three months ago and enjoy going to the roger...as long as Sunny is working. This place is a different experience when she is/isn't there... Sunny is a hard working, service oriented person....knows everyons name & favorite drink... really what a neighborhood bar is all about But when she's not there, turn out the lights. Except for the owner, the rest of the staff are either on vacation or forget they are at work... ten minute wait to get a "oh, hello. Did you want something" is so common.... Anyway, drive by ... look for the friendly, pretty blonde....if you see her head in for a great time....otherwise, keep driving.
Ummmmm, OK. The writer forgot to mention the amazing clientel from the John's Landing neighborhood (intelligent, fun, witty, etc.), the FANTASTIC and always entertaining customer service of Starr, Sunny, & Cheryl, the 15 plasmas displaying every game you can imagine, and the INCREDIBLE burgers (YES, they are better than Stanichs'). We also have daily food & drink specials (especially for Blazer games, Nascar, etc.) outdoor seating in as of this week, and poker in this month. Gotta luv the Jolly Roger @ John's Landing!!! Nobody, and I mean, NOBODY, has more fun than we do!!!!!
Stanich's rode too long on its reputation. Let's admit: It was gross in there. The folks from Cheerful put a lot of elbow grease into reclaiming that space, reborn as the Jolly Roger II. It follows on with their normal modus operandi: cheap and dark.
On Wednesdays a waitress that speaks in energetic parenthesis will tell you just what to order. Although she may terrify you at first with her aggressive loquaciousness, she can lift your spirits once you know what to expect.
A bartender accosted me during a Blazers game to explain, eyebrows raised to the ceiling, what the criteria should be for retiring jerseys. He would run off when needed at the bar, then trot back to reiterate. Once again, wholly entertaining if you don't have any privacy issues or some sort of Californian obsession with what appropriate server behavior is. If you are like that, I probably don't want to have a beer with you anyway. Get out of my local bar.
I love a dive bar, and the Jolly is all you expect from a middle of the road dive bar, with one notable exception: it was remodeled after the smoking ban. There is not a hint of stank to the entire place. It is eerie, but like the spitfire wait staff, it is pretty soothing once you adjust your thinking.
The food can be pretty good, not outstanding, but the happy hour offerings are alluring enough. JRog, we welcome you to the bar-starved Southwest.
