BarFly's Review of Kay's (Sellwood)
The corner, oh, how she changes...a little. (see review of past ownership, as it still in a slightly grimier way, pertains). Former Governor Barbara Roberts can often be found sinking bucks into the video poker.

A welcome throwback to the days before the Sellwood area was overrun by the SUV-set, and was just another blue collar neighborhood. Surprisingly, the food in this windowless nicotine corral is quite good, served by seen-it-all waitresses who may well predate the Johnson administration (a good thing), and the drinks are plenty stiff. Bar graced by the ever-delightful and de-lovely barman about town, Mr Jeffrey D. Wade!

Last night, myself and two friends stopped into Kay’s for the first time to hear Mathew Kendell play some music. We enjoyed his music. It was Saturday night and the place had all of eleven customers in it. I thought that this was a little strange being that it was Saturday night and there was live music playing. We all ordered drinks and my drink was so weak that I just felt ripped off. When the waitress came around to see if we wanted more drinks I politely explained that the first drink had so little alcohol in it, that I didn’t feel good about ordering a second drink. Her response was to just stair into space and say nothing. My friend ordered another drink and I watched the bartender short pour his drink as well. My friend said that he could hardly even taste and alcohol in the drink and that his first drink was the same way. I began to understand why the place had so few people in it.
We decided to leave and go to a bar that doesn’t feel like they need to rip people off. The next bar was completely packed with people and the drinks were excellent. If a person is looking to spend his hard earned dollars on ridiculously weak drinks, then Kay’s is the place to go. Now I understand why there was only eleven people there on a Saturday night at 10pm. I would not recommend Kay’s Bar on Milwaukie and to anyone.
I went for open mic nite and was disappointed to find out they only allow music- no other artists. Very narrow bar spacewise (you're gonna get bumped into repeatedly) but I overheard positive feedback from neighborhood regulars while there.
I absolutely love Kays. I enjoy the staff, the music, and if you give Jeffery and adjitive you can find yourself sipping a coctail you never thought to order. The management team is exceptional! The food is yummy. Kays also draws in a good crowd! Everyone should try it out! It is a great place to meet friends and stay a while! What a gem!
Kay's is a funny place, never frequented it due to smoke. Seems cleaned up both in spirit and clientele. Walked in recently and ended up playing trivia, pretty fun. Jeff does a good job. Had some tater tots and some yummy beverages, keeping our eyes on this one.
I used to go to kay's every couple of weeks, for the friday prime rib. Could never find a seat. Since they changed ownership, a couple of things have changed. No prime rib on fridays, and can always find a seat.
Just went since new ownership moved in. Good stiff cheap drinks, but food is the same and costs more now. I like this bar, but bring back the wooden indian!!!!
Kay's recently sold to a new owner. The previous owners had been there forever! But the menu was old, the restroom still had those hideous never-ending cloth handtowels that just spin back into the metal box they just came from and the cigarette smoke is so strong that you can practically feel the chemotherapy needle entering your veins when you walk in. The new menu is from this century and the bar is now SMOKE-FREE! Yeefrigginhaw! And I hear they are going to have live music...something not currently available in that part of Sellwood.
I am an avid non-smoker and very sensative to it. I did not find this place to be all that smokey. It was a cute little place. I did find the in your face Video Crack a bit overwhelming, I hate that those things are taking over all the bars... :( They could relax their price for a red beer a bit. But it is only money and red beer is a fabulous breakfast food :) It just sold to a new owner and it seems service has gotten better. I say give it a shot it isn't for everyone but, it might be for you.
Its haunted! And the food is probably the best barf food in town. If you like Holmans your gunna blow your mind here. Sorry no annoying wanna be dumbass hipsters though. Old crabby people, but heck if your hungover and need some good grub and a strong one Kay's rules.
