BarFly's Review of Maiden in the Mist (CLOSED)
Now under new ownership with a new Spanish style tapas menu and an abbreviated name - The Maiden. New hours: 4:00 PM-12:30 AM Monday - Thursday, 4:00 PM-2:00 AM Friday and Saturday, closed Sundays.
$4-7 menu, $1 off wells, $10 bucket of select bottles, $5 house sangria 4-6pm Monday - Saturday.
Former review:
Low-key, nautically themed, cabin-size bar from Sheila Baraga, creator of the Sapphire Hotel. This is no Pirates of the Caribbean theme park - the atmosphere is restrained, given to quiet conversation, and covert drooling over the comely bar staff, but little else. Children welcome until 10pm. Menu served until 2am (but it closes on Sundays at midnight). $2 well, $3 house wine, $3 drafts, $1 select doms 4-6pm M-F.
Andrea's Cha Cha Club, Beaker & Flask, East Bank Saloon, Gil's Speakeasy, Grand Cafe, Grand Central Bowl, Green Dragon, Holocene, La Merde, Montage, Morrison Hotel, My Father's Place, Sassy's, Side Door, Slow Bar, Sway Bar, The Maiden, The Slammer
Wow. Angry screed? No name-calling, no naughty words or assault on your character... was it my use of the word "steamed" that upset you? Businesses are dropping like flies, bars included, so the word "CLOSED" in big bold letters may give folks the wrong idea...like they're CLOSED. I think the way you "organize your listings" could stand an update. Sorry I hurt your feelings.
If you have been using BarFly to plan your pub crawls, you must have grown accustomed to how we organize our listings.
When a place changes both ownership and names, we create a new listing. For instance "Maiden in the Mist" changing to "The Maiden". In fact, it says that very thing, right here on this very page, complete with a link to the correct listing. Surely you noted that part when you came to this very page, before scribbling your angry screed, right?
It's not Closed, it changed owners and changed names. I totally changed a pub crawl based on this listing as CLOSED. Then I find out it's NOT. Waste of hours of my time, and loss of business for them. If I were the owners, I'd be steamed. I know I am.
We have been to Maiden in the Mist about 5 times. Excellent food each time we went. Decent to good service. The last two or three visits it had gotten steadily more crowded, and so noisy you couldn't hear your dining companions.
We went back there (for the excellent food) on 04/25/08 and found it is no longer Maiden in the Mist. It is now a place called The Maiden, with a spanish tapas menu. Not the excellent menu that was served when it was Maiden in the Mist. aragh!!!
we went for some, as you say, "quiet conversation" and happy hour which (according to your much loved and used web site) states "til 7:00" We get there a little after 6pm and the bitchy bartender tells us NO it's NOT happy hour. we sat in the corner, but could barely hear ourselves talk because of the extremely loud "frat" atmosphere. (o.k. fine, just would have liked to know in advance...) We each ordered a salad and had 2 martini's which were served in the smallest martini glasses ever. (seriously!) walked away paying $60 for 2 salads and 4 drinks - w.t.f? oh yeah and they charged us EXTRA for using credit cards! but didn't tell us until after the fact!!! so much for happy hour - I'm calling it "never going back" hour. sorry sheila.
I live in the neighborhood, and the Maiden is quickly becoming one of my favorite watering holes. The late night happy hour is awesome.
Very good, all be it small, veggie selection. I had the eggplant sandwich, which was a nice change from the typical garden burger selection. My Gin and Tonic was made quite well, with a heavy hand on the Gordon's, the way I like it. The staff was very helpful and attentive, even as they seemed to be caught off guard by the rush they were getting, no doubt in part by the listing in the current PDX monthly as one of the best spots in town. And you know what, they may just be.
Checked out the M in M last weekend. Had the lentil soup- excellent. We all ordered some of the very awesomely named mixed drinks- I had a Man Cherry and I didn't lose it, though there was more than enough Maker's in it to make me think I'd found it all over again. All of my drinking companions agreed that the drinks were the way we like them- booze with a little mixer. Staff was super ultra friendly and silly to boot. Lots of comfy places to sit, pretty dark inside. Great place to go hang out, not sure if it's a place you'd go to trade in your friends, at least not yet. Liquor selection was great, 2 taps were TG and something else attractive, food looks awesome. Go before it gets too crowded- it's a winner.
