BarFly's Review of Mary's Club
The mother of all strip bars, Mary's kicked off Portland's topless trend in 1965, and continues to earn its landmark status daily. Artful dancers take a more burlesque approach to the (tiny) stage, presenting unique routines which often feature astonishing acts of contortionism and top-notch pole work. Oddly Tom of Finland-esque vintage murals along the rear wall. Cool, hardworking staff - it's never closed early or missed a day, in 40+ years of operation (it's open 11am-2:30am all 365)! Surprisingly good mexican food from the neighboring taqueria served till 11pm everynight. $2.50 PBR pints till 4:30 daily. $2 cover Fri/Sat only.

Yo, Mary's may be small, but the BarTendress's and Dancers are so sweet and beautiful. The dancers vary and are pole talented. Please kick down a dollar or 2 when the dancers ask for juke box money. I have never had a bad experience in over 7 years as a patron. The food at the mexican resturant connected called El Grillo is exceptional and cheap. If you want a glamorous club don't go here. If you want old school cheap PBR, friendly sweet and talented dancers then rock it don't stop it. Love you Stella.
I love the girls at Mary's, the pole loves them and the music is great. And so are the barmaids. I'm a regular and it leads the clubs, a hell of an experience every time.
This place is different from every other strip club I've been to. The music is a refreshing break from the typical booty shaking stuff. The girls I saw were very sexy and really skilled at their art. Any chick can get up and shake her ass, but the girls I saw had a sensuality to them that was very mesmerizing. This place is a dive, yet in a way, classy. If you're looking for something a little different, check it out.
I went to Mary's for my first time tonight. I was pleasantly surprised that I really liked it! It is on the small side-rather intimate and not a bad seat in the house-it was starting to get packed to the gils by 9 pm. Saturday nite. It has a lot of history behind it-and you can feel it it oozing out of the walls. If you like retro--that is kinda dive-y, but still kinda classy this place is for you--a touch of carny, a touch of class. I was very surprised at the mixed crowd--there were as many women there as men and lots of couples on dates of all ages, bikers, frat boys, young punks, veterans in wheelchairs-you name it--many classy, some seedy--all on their best behavior. Even though it was a Saturday night, perhaps I was early, I was not charged a cover at the door, and I got a pint of Mac's big enough to drown in for $4!! They had tons of good brews on tap and all mixed drinks too. Now on to the ladies--I really liked their choice of dancers. I guarantee you--the girl of your dreams will soon magically appear on that stage to seemingly be your private dancer. I loved the fact that each girl can pick her own tunes on the jukebox. Every dancer was lovely in her own way-I fell in love with everyone lots of tatoos, but still classy--surprisingly alluring!. Some were pretty on the stereotypical way--tall, leggy, blond, buxom, playboy bunny types--others were smaller, more full figured, a few were slightly older, yes--they all surprised me with their talents. There was one gal who was slightly zoftig to my standards--she surprise and frightened the hell out of me in a good way--she was a bit of a wonderful freak with the way she could contort and move that body on the pole and the floor--a tattoed contortionist who could disjoint-not for the faint hearted! Trust me, from the itty bitties to vavoom gonzongas, they all looked natural to me--and I know these things!!--all ladies charmed and in the end stripped down to just their smiles. Hey! Down on the rail! Watch out for those chopper blade rotating legs with those 5 in tall stilletto platforms shoes--they could take your head off! I was there only about an hour and half and saw 6 dancers, so fast rotation. I hope to see a sprinkling of Latina, Asian and Black girls on my next trip. Only one thing that upset me. No one was tipping all these gals much--and they really deserved it! Hey you! Get down their now, the rail seat is open for you--and drop a bunch of Fivers down for these hardworking lovelies. If you leave Mary's disappointed--you are a goddamn fool!
what can I say great place cheap beers, beautiful women, was there a while ago while on vacation headin back there soon cant wait.
Are there better places with hotter dancers? Sure, but not a lot of places left where you can watch a dancer cavort around a stage the size of a queen size bed while Johnny Cash's Ring of Fire blares across the stereo system.
Great food next door. A bathroom that has my favorite graffiti covered condom machine. And some basically friendly girls and bartenders. Art work on the walls worthy of a gay bath house. Walking distance from Powells books and Counter Culture.
No bad seat in the house. Girls won't hustle you to death, but tip them god damn it they're not getting paid.
God I love this place.
Well some of the dancers could be a bit easier on the eyes but it is definitely different. It is nice not having to deal with strippers nagging you for a lap dance. You can just sit down with your $2.50 PBR and people watch (both the girls and the ecclectic clientel that passes through. The locals are often east and interesting to talk to if you sit at the bar. I dark, dingy, different type of place, that's a scandelous experience.
Wow, where do I begin...fat ugly strippers or old wrinkled raisin strippers...seriously, that's the selection...and the music? PFFT! The drinks are pathetic as is the service. Always a group of ugly fuckin' lesbians thinking they own the joint and trying to pick fights with patrons...seriously girl, you may think you are a stud who can kick a dude's ass, but you are still only 5 feet tall, so back down...and the clientele? LOL! Drunk straight guys who verbally abuse the "dancers" and the staff...seriously, avoid at all costs...if you really wanna see pussy and tits, go to Acrop...
Go for the strippers and stay for a burrito- trust me they are good just like the kind from the trucks in the Beav. Mary's has friendly service with a nice selection of taps and liquor. The ladies are always hot and really know how to use that poll. Laid back in the afternoon it gets livelier late night but always comfortable. And never an annoying DJ- I'm happy to tip more for this luxury.
I totally commend the strippers at Marys for their balls. Nobody's working the door, the crowd is pretty rough(the druggie-and-transient-filled Stewart hotel is right next door), and the bartender isn't even a guy. Showing your cooter to the grossest people in Portland has gotta take it's toll on you, especially since street people generally aren't great tippers. Now what the fuck are they supposed to do when one of these crackheads gets out of control? Have a naked girl and the 100 lb. bartender bounce him out? They need to hire security to be there all the time, not just weekend nights. It would be worth it cuz I would go there more often if if wasn't so risky, and I can't be the only one.
I think Mary's club is nothing but AWESOME in every way. I think the mens room is well used but that is good...lots of customers! Us men are graffitti adicts wholove to destroy so lets grow up and make the world a better place. Drinks aren't any more expensive than any other barwithout entertainment downtown. Quit whining! If you don't like the downtown atmosphere of derelics and panhandlers stay home and enjoy your T.V.
Great wife, eh? Wait, you don't say great, you say beautiful. Obviously, not great. I told my girlfriend that I went to Mary's and she got jealous cause she wasn't with me! Mary's Rocks, and if you don't believe me, ask the older (60s) couple who walked in infront of me!
I lied to my wife about going to yet another titty and twat club while on an interview in Portland. Mary's was the receipt she found. I am a sex addict who has a gorgeous wife but sneaks around to satisfy my desires. Now she wants to divorce me. I wonder, was that shaved pussy really worth it? Sluts bending over in my face? I had a hard on for a stripper there and my wife actually got her phone # and talked to her! I won't say her name but man has this caused me alot of greif. I lie about my addiction, but cannot stop. I know strippers are whores, and I can pretend they want my wad. They do of course-only it's my WAD OF CASH!! Don't do it, losers!!!
they need to not let in all those downtown crack heads, one was harassing a dancer and thier staff didnt do a thing. do they realy need that skeezers 5 bucks? other than that the girls were nice and stuff, but they really need to put the jukebox on free mode and kick out meth addicts who are jut there to follow around dancers.
It's an awesome bar, totally low key and laid back. Those other people should quit complaining about the dirty bathroom (what do you expect a men's bathroom to be like in a strip bar where a men's bathroom is used way more than the women's?) and paying for the jukebox. It's not that big of a deal, and the dancer's certainly don't have to put their own money in, nice, non-complaining customers do that for them. I think the jukebox gives the place personality, it's certainly better than those annoying dj's at the other clubs. The staff is nice, and nice to look at too! They all seem to get along and are like a family. In fact, it's run by a family, which makes Mary's even more set apart from any other strip club in Portland, and hey, that's good enough for me.
I recently spent a week in PDX. Mary's was my favorite spot to finish an evening of wandering about downtown. The bar staff was great and the dancers were sexy, authentic and entertaining. Cheers to the staff of Mary's club.
I've heard it said that Mary's is an acquired taste, if so.. I acquired the taste rather quickly! I look forward to returning.
RIGHT... so I like it... I like it alot... Good girls ... a great selection if you like two .. and when the music plays its chosen for the crowd.. I swear she put on WEEN just for me when I was sitting there putting singles on the deck.. GO figger.. so Why is this place now etched in my brain? was it the SEXY brunette or the beer or the mexican food I got through the hole in the wall that leads to the mexi mobil outside.. (they do a great TACO) and YES It was the girls and its got great atmosphere and totally not offensive unless you got something agenst a little "T an A" SO Go there and enjoy the bliss of women enjoying being women.. Wondeful simply wonderful... ROCK ON!
I grew up in PDX getting into dive bars with men way older than my father and now that I am of age I realize that Mary's has ALWAYS had the most beautiful women dancing up a storm, some are sultry 50's Pin-up girls, some are buxom yoga queens... As a woman I have always been happy to take my friends to Mary's and tell them a few stories and wander around downtown... The vibe is never creepy or weird.
I first went to Mary's when I first turned 21. I thought it was a gross nasty place and the ladies arent much to look at. But the music is good (my boyfriend of 3 years and I used to go a lot) but we got tired of feeling like we needed to shower when we got home to get the dirty off of us! The one thing I will say is that the music they play is decent..there is one chick that dances to Ring of fire by Johnny Cash and thats pretty chill, and I am never jealous when my boyfriend goes there cause I know he isnt flirting with anyone! Drinks are spendy for such a dive, and the girls have to pump a jukebox..which is rediculous for them! With all the money Mary's brings in on a weekend they really should invest in a stereo system for these poor girls who have to use $40 of the $60 they earned for the night (because all the guys are cheap in there) to play music to shake their thing for everyone else. My review..good place to hang and listen to music...but it is small and hot and there isnt much room to breathe! And I have ripped my pants on nails on the chairs everytime I have gone there!
After a long night of showing off fine Portland establishments to a wedding party from Ohio and Florida, we made Mary's the last stop on our journey. Walking from East, I started up a conversation with this attractive man Kevin. We chatted it up all the way to Mary's, enjoying the warm summer night.
We continued the dance that two lovers do as they talk and study the other for the first time. We had our first kiss there, two fags making out in the dark smoky chamber. Soon after this, we decided to continue our conversation at home, leaving our mutual friends without explanation. Our horrified mid-western friends were a little wide eyed, though had a great time nontheless.
Still together, we look forward to our anniversary at Mary's.
Maybe it's been remodeled since my last visit but Mary's had the absolutely most disgusting restrooom of any strip club I've ever been in, which is a lot. I was sitting at the bar in Mary's once and some crazy old guy said he was going to "cut off my balls and slit my belly." Everyone else was ignoring him as if he sits there and does this often. So a trip to Mary's can be a weird experience. Panhandlers often beg for change at the front door. Mary's interior is nice, there's a beautiful mural with a tropical motif painted all along one wall and another large mural behind the bar. Dancers traditionally will sit at the bar and chat with customers between sets unless they're under 21 in which case they'll stay hidden away in the dressing room under the stage. Also, Mary's is the only strip club in Portland that doesn't play music for free. Dancers have to put money in a jukebox next to the stage and will often ask customers to donate funds for the jukebox. It's kind of annoying when you put up $10 to pay for a $5 beer, tip the bartender $2, and throw the remaining $3 on stage for the dancer; when the dancer asks for more money for music. If you're not losing enough money, there are video poker machines to help you. Don't ask the dancer who is making more money: video poker or her, because she'll realize guys are putting $100 in a video game and ignoring her. Dancers don't get paid by the hour, they only get what's thrown on the stage so be generous. Mary's is a great place to relax when it isn't crowded, such as early afternoons.
