BarFly's Review of McPeet's
Now with new owners...!
A cozy pub rather smaller than their impressive signage suggests, McPeet's has managed to remain a proper local within a neighborhood largely unchanged these last few generations. Unembittered grampas take the day shift, surrendering the bar 'round nightfall to a younger, livelier crowd drinking in the old boys' footsteps. Sports chatter, friendly dust-em-ups round the pool tables, a sense of tradition - it hardly seems like Portland at all, actually.

Worst bar experience in 16 years in Portland- staff was rude, non responsive, I won't be back. Sat at bar during a Ducks football game (GO DUCKS!) was ignored, ordered food that never came, left after a 1/2 hour, I saw the cook and decided I couldn't eat there-I have worked in food service for years and you know what I mean. The staff chatted casually it was slow and I felt hatred and disgust- not the emotions I was looking for that evening but THANK YOU McPeet's for delivering your shitty vibe to my realm....contact me at omlive@live.com and I can re iterate what I said...
Steve, if you were against the smoking ban, then I do feel ya. If you were apathetic about, or worse, supported the smoking ban, then I consider the noise pollution that has now resulted to be just dessert.
I agree with several of these reviews, old school (rare on this neighborhood) and truly a local hangout. The downside is that many of the late night customers forget their inside voices once 1130 or midnight rolls around, and they congregate outside to smoke and share their views on, oh, I don't know, monster truck rallies, getting fired from their latest job, Garth Brooks, or whatever. There are often 10-20 of them outside talking, yelling, laughing loud enough that even half a block away they are perfectly audible. The proprieters don't seem to be interested in trying to keep a handle on the noise. It's great to have places that are unspoiled and un-yuppified, but it's too bad they don't take a little more responsibilty and respect the neighborhood by keeping it a *little* quieter for those people living nearby who actually contribute to society by holding down a job, paying taxes, not driving while blitzed, etc.
The beer is warm, the female evening bartender can not mix a decent drink to save her life, and drama regularly ensues around the "core" group hanging out there (which does make for some semi-entertaining people watching). This place used to be alright, but recently the vibe has been unbearable. If you like after hours parties, however, it seems fairly regular that I've seen/heard drunk people stumbling out the door at 4-5am.
On the upside, the daytime bartending is pretty good; the atmosphere is laid back and unpretentious. A recent remodel cleaned up the bathrooms nicely, including chalk board walls to satisfy the bathroom graffiti artist in us all. They do a really decent hamburger, easily rivaling Stanich's (down the street), as well.
appears frozen in time. the kind of place I used to go with my Dad and drink grenadine-enhanced soda pop while he sipped whiskey-n-cokes and shot the breeze. a core group of locals grounds the place in its primary function as a neighborhood bar. very low key and friendly. two flatscreens for sports. web-linked jukebox plays just about anything you want, but is not cheap. video poker draws some sad characters as always, but I'm sure those machines are largely necessary for the bar's financial survival. sometimes I walk in there on a friday evening and I'm the only guy in there. sometimes I walk in there at 2pm on Tuesday and it's packed.
when i lived in the area this was the *only* bar i liked. met the BT you are referring to (owner's daughter) a few times. she seemed cool. most of the regulars were friendly too.
I work with the owners daughter who sometimes slings the liquid at McPeets. I've only been there once, but I dig the place. Wish I lived closer, I could drink myself into a stupor and stumble home.
It's the best Ladies Night in town. COULD do without all the smoke, but love that we can just roll home. It doesn't get any more "Neighborhood Bar" than this. With each squeak of the door and turn of the heads, you can almost hear "Norrrmmmmmmm" play in your head.
I recenly e mailed mister Ritter about Mcpeets not being on the site. Viola here it is. Thanks! I must say that I liked this place. The owner KATHLEEN is very friendly. Mondays they have $2.50 micro's all day (large selection of them on tap as well). (The outside tables are awesome weather permitting) Golden Tee golf and a mega touch not to mention a pool table. I however enjoyed watching the lot of people in the place and sipping a cold beer silently. Regulars to hipsters to suits and all inbetween. Nice casual and laid back homey bar. I was also told that they just got the hard liquor recently for those of you who do not know that.
Over here in Beaumont, we call McPeet's "the office." It's a pretension-free zone where you can go alone, with friends, or just randomly for a nice pint. On St. Patrick's Day, we sang "Wild Rover," accompanied by the fabulous Melissa on piano, along with many other Irish standards (never mind that the bar's namesake is -- ahem -- of Scottish descent). Be sure to use the bike rack because we got 'em recently installed in the neighborhood, and not all biz owners wanted them outright at first (but they are coming around).
Only downside is the prevalence of dingedy-ding video poker and high degree of smoke sometimes, but hell it's a bar what do you expect.
McPeet's is all you could hope for in a neighborhood bar, and I hope it stays there forever.
