BarFly's Review of Moon and Sixpence
The Foghorn Stringband, who've braved five figure crowds at global festivals, play every week to a handful of spectators at the Moon and Sixpence - many of whom presume the performance to be an impromptu jam, not simply from the absence of cover or stage, but because this hidden, lovingly-tended English pub breeds such an atmosphere.
The old country is evoked in darts, standard British pub fare (with flavor! This is still America, after all), a selection of British tabloids and magazines, and actual englishmen, who may be hard to discern in the perpetual autumnal glow of the wooden interior, but stand out like bright pink sore thumbs on the sunny back patio. Several taps (two hand pumps for cask ales) and impressive selection of bottles.
I've been a regular for a bout a year or more and I love it. It's the only place I know of where I can get a good beer, good food, sit in a cozy corner and read a book without it being too loud, too too dark, too full or whatever. The food is awesome, especially the soups...
I have no idea what these people are talking about (bad service). You gotta try pretty hard to receive bad service at the moon.
I cringe when I read the few bad reviews. The Moon for years has had really tasty food, a connoiseur's corral of ales, and such a welcoming warm ambience. Its a wonderful neighborhood spot in Portland to kickback, enjoy the gift of barley, good music and a nice crowd. Every joint has its flaws but The Moon are good citizens. You complainers aren't old enough to remember what a bleak pub desert Portland used to be. We're in heaven now.
I've been to the Moon dozens of times for the music, food and darts. I'ts an OK place but consistently the bar tenders are rude. If I get treated descent its a surprise.
dude named siam: the only reason you didn't get good service is because you are a douche bag. i have spent 5 years as a regular there because of other bars being filled with people like you. don't come back. in fact: go jump off the I-5 bridge cuz you suck at being a human.
Been a customer for years, a BIG drinkers and a BIGGER tipper. Got 86'd for gently tossing my tab on the ground outside in jest. Fuckm'.
I've visited the Moon and Six Pence several times over the past six months. Each time I instantly felt at home sitting at the bar. The service has always been prompt and friendly. The other patrons are generally friendly. The beer selection is very good. I'm a great fan of Anderson Valley Boont -- that's mainly why I go there. The dinners are good, but the appetizers are dull, dull, dull. You get a nice big plate of french fries for $2.50, but that's about the best they have to offer. Prices are fair. It will definitely be one of my stops during future trips.
Came to test the great food that came so highly recommended. Too bad the waittress passed me thrice without telling me to pick a seat. Then gave menus to the couple that came after me. When I shot her a discomforted look after she finally asked if I wanted a drink, she passed me onto another waittress. Left after one drink and ate elsewhere. BAD SERVICE.
I'm a regular and that says alot because I can't stand most bars. This place has a cozy feeling that is all too rare in most joints today. Just as important is their tap beer is consistently fresh--unlike their English Pub brothers down on Belmont.
Love it now its non-smoking. Great atmosphere inside...really feels like a good ol London pub. Excellent Irish Session Monday. Only one server at the bar when I was there, she was pretty rushed and forgot about me. Gave me a pint on the house as an apology and I'm not even a regular. You cant argue with that.
drove past it several times trying to find it, but well worth the search. music was great, wasn't that smokey, but wouldn't order a cocktail again...stick with the beer.
And stay for some food, it's truly outstanding. I love the pasty and rarebit. The service is always great and there is never a shortage of interesting people to strike up a random conversation- emphasis on random. Never be afraid to ask "Did you push or pull?"
Always twenty great beers on tap, dozens more in bottles, full bar, and a tasty Spanish Coffee as well.
that last post is mental. the moon is open. has always been open. and god willing will always be open.
I live in the bookmark apartments on top of the library and i went over their and their is a sign on the door that the building is clsoed while they fix up the place. i cant wait for it to reopen.
Yeah, it's like sitting inside a cigarette most nights. But it's still the only decent English pub in town; and the only place I've found so far that does proper fish and chips and almost always does them very well. Go in the summer and you can sit outside at the back to avoid the smoke.
It's been said before, and I'll say it again: this place is WAY smoky! But if you can get beyond that fact, or if you're one of the puffers responsible for making it smoky, it's certainly worth stopping by for a couple of pints. This place is a bar's bar.
still can't rival the Horse Brass for smokiness and typical English-style crappy service.
I live near the Moon and Six. I have friends in bands who play there all the time. The food is decent. But dang it all, the smoke! I cannot bear to be in that place at night. It's like walking into a smoker's lung. Last time I was there I didn't last long enough to even order a drink. Had to dash out to the sidewalk, my eyes steamed with tears, gasping and gulping at the fresh air. This is one of the smokiest bars in Portland--worse than the freakin' Pub at the End of the Universe even.
Used to be one of my mainstays. The service has always been a bit lacking, but I loved the beer selection and curry fries. Last few vists, the place was filled with really drunk, young, frat type guys who were being served, while I wasn't. Here's a tip... serve the folks that are most likely to give you a tip. And if they're lighting firecrackers, show them the door.
The bred pudding isn't like your mamma's! It's wonderfull. I highly recommend the dinner fare as well.
Great pub in the dark, smokey English stlye. Great music, almost nightly. Huge huge selection of beer (that can get rather pricey mind you, but usually worth the extra coin for something special).
Nice place to have a pint and strike up a conversation with someone at the bar.
as my neighborhood bar, and I don't even live in the neighborhood! Great pub with friendly and interesting staff and regulars. Dark and cozy, wide selection of booze and beer, excellent acoustic bands 3-4 nights a week.
