My friends and I had a great time here last Friday at the benefit show for an organization called the Groove Movement. GREAT bands - Mars Retrieval Unit totally surprised me (check this band out!) - also great pizza, stiff drinks, professional staff. Looks like the new owner has made some improvements to the room too. (I think I recall that the place used to be a total dump.) Anyway, its better now. Not so scary-gothy-metal anymore. Also, its not really my usual thing, but there was a DJ scene going on in the smaller room - it drew in a different crowd than the main bands did. It made for an interesting mix of Portlanders. Plus I love the idea of partying to benefit a good cause... awesome.
I'm actually bummed! I went there and the bathroom was actually clean. I didn't slip and fall on vomit like last time I was there when it was Saballa's. The music didn't make my ears bleed. There were actually PEOPLE there enjoying the music! WTF? I like going to the show and be the only one there, so the band says "HEY" when I walk in. I got a piece of pizza and it actually tasted like NY City pizza! I hate NY city! It was clean, the staff smiled and was quick, there were two different shows going on in both rooms, and everyone looked like they were having fun, all of which I'm not too fond of in a club. Man, there goes the neighborhood! No more fights and blood on the floor. No more loud screaming music. No more angry staff. I need to find a new crappy venue.....
I was interested in finding out if the Mt. Tabor Legacy new owner would be good for this venue but after going to mttaborlegacy.com it states that the new owner owes $30,000 in equipment to the previous owner. First off this is not a good sign since this place needs many renavations. The food is awful especially the pizza which tastes like cardboard and they serve drinks in plastic cups,LOL. Even more recent they actually were serving beers out of a keg in a trashcan full of ice like it was a house party, the staff/service is also below par. Sorry to say (I really am) but this place/new owner is NOT doing Portland justice, it's more of an embarrassment.
Well we checked it out, there was a cover, even if you just wanted to go to the bar side. I don't give a rip about weirdly named punko bands. And I really don't want to pay to ignore their noise. I just wanted to drop some $ at the bar. Under the old management this wasn't an issue. Tsk, tsk.
