BarFly's Review of Mount Tabor Legacy (CLOSED)
Closed, but slated for re-opening August 2009
(formerly Sabala's) Mt. Tabor Legacy’s looking good since the top to bottom extreme makeover of the dilapidated former neighborhood moviehouse turned the main bar on its heel, pushing it against the far wall, and cleverly creating a ‘mezzanine’ seating area above in-house garages for four billiard tables, which occupy the vast floor space between shows. In the former Sideshow Lounge, improved seating and a beefed up array of stand-up video games are notable, but the crappy beadboard paneling imposed over the stunning 3-D blacklight murals commissioned by its visionary former owners, only beg the question, “Why?” Take it down!
Tuesday-Thursday: Free pool.
Tricycle Racing Starts April 1st.
Angelo's, Bar of the Gods (BOG), Dingo's, Mount Tabor Theater, Por Que No? Otra Vez, Sapphire Hotel, Sewickly's Addition, Space Room, Tanker, Watertrough, Zach's Shack
Well we wanted to go here last night and ended up out front scratching our heads wondering what happened. I feel bad for the owner he was a great guy and tried very hard. That was the only place I would karaoke at becuse it was OK to be terrible. Now instead of hanging at the 'Tabe like I wanted to I'm home being made to watch that Paris Hilton show. This sucks. At least I cribbed the recipe for the Blarney Stone shots. Wonder what will happen to Tabor next.
I've been partial to this place since I won a chili cookoff here when it was Sabala's. Our drinking nights are Mon-Tues (yuck, I know) so we've been doing Monday karaoke here. We used to be practically the only ones there but it's caught on lately. More ears to be assaulted by our tone-deafness. Beware the Blarney Stone shots! They taste like a circus in your mouth but don't do more than two. Unless you want to wake up forgetting how you got home. Why are my clothes in the living room?
This low-key establishment has a groovin main room with a high ceiling imparting a nicely wet reverb. Make a left-turn and you'll find your mind warped in the black-lighty Legacy Lounge. I love the bifurcated personality of the place. I am very fond of Tabor and know its ambience well, since they let our motley posse of drum bums bang away there most Sundays. The cool staff keeps the vibes non-harsh. Just a fine 100-year-old building well serving the Southeast. Every hood needs a place like this, flashing movie marquee lights and all, a beacon of rocknroll, and the definite anchor tenant in the Sickly Addition ghetto. I could dig more groove bands and less toxic thrash, but I'm a fucken Deadhead, natch. But hey, this is the 'Thorne, where hippies and headbangers bend Pabst, side by side.
Had a good experience seeing a band here recently. Love the tall ceilings, good sound and a cool balconyish area too. The drinks were pretty OK and priced very reasonably (particularly during a show).
I've been to several shows here and I like the rock and roll feel of the place.
The remodel is nice, food is good ($1 tacos!) and sound was great.
Legacy Lounge has various events like free movies on Wednesdays - check out their website.
The owners and management obviously give a damn, so I think Mt Tabor is worth supporting.
Good job! This place has really done a 360! Great new look and so clean. The former owner(s) just didn't seem to care about much, the new folks are really rocking that place back on the map! Good beer selection, good food and a great staff. 100% improved.
Being a lil' freaked considering practically living at the bar when it was Sabala's, I went into this whole ownership transition with mixed feeling. What were these "kids"(Rich and Dawning are both in their mid-twenties)gonna do to my beloved watering hole and second home, I thought to myself. Well, needles to say, I have been pleasantly surprised to see the positive progression of the bar now known as Mt Tabor Legacy. Like Kyle as mentioned one of the best moved initially made was to keep some of the important former staff(i.e,Keebler,Lord,Gabe),they still pur one hell of a prefunk cocktail that gets my musical juices flowin on the saturday nights I work/frequent. The guys have slowly(as cash allows)began to revamp the main hallway, bathrooms(much needed!)and infamous sideshow lounge, while keeping alot of the original Sabala's charm(Extremo's glow in the dark Hallway murals). They have continued the booking of pretty much every genre of music available on a local and national levels, with plans still for a big grand re-opening slated for July. Weekly events still include Bingo(wed.),Karaoke(thurs.)and of course, my lil 80's dance party shindig every saturday(small amount of needed self promotion). They also now have a full menu of food, including full entrees and an ever rotating selection of homemade pizza. The best thing however is the return of the top shelf booze....Super Hell Yeah! All and all, so far, so good for the Mt. Tabor Legacy! DJ Gravylegs
