BarFly's Review of Mummy's
Dark cellar setting suits the crypt motif, but some cut-glass hieroglyphic reliefs and a couple of small replica sarcophagi aren't enough to flesh out what could be a fun theme. Still a good place to escape to, as it's usually completely unpopulated. Hyper-hospitable brother-owners man the small, square bar. Closes by 10pm. Belly dancing every Saturday

I didn't feel like waiting in the will call line for my Flaming Lips tickets at the Keller, and this place was nearby. Didn't have food this time but their specialty drinks are awesome and the quiet atmosphere away from the annoyingly loud ticket scalpers was exactly what I needed. Especially love the layout with all the windows. Next time I will see if I can find any secret passageways. Maybe not the best place for a hardcore barfly but superb for a romantic date.
Quiet and secret, this is a lovers hideaway. Owners are gracious and kind hosts. Artwork on the walls—well, perhaps a little overpriced? Believe this though, Magic will follow if you're meeting here for the first time.
i have heard of this place for a while, both good & bad reviews. i thought i was going to walk into a dark crypt by what i read on here & elsewhere online...
to my surprise i loved the place! the owner is totally funny, drinks are great for the price, i enjoyed my salad & the belly dancing was fun. (i have read other reviews here about them taking classes, well it is a great place for students to learn how to dance)
1st time there the scampi had a sauce to die for, place was empty. 2nd time, scampi sauce was similar, but NOWHERE near as tasty. My better half ordered the spicy meatballs. Not spicy, in fact honestly bland. 3rd time....my scampi had the sauce the meatballs had on previous visit. Absolutely no similarity to previous visits. I can deal with consistently average, the key is consistent. These guys don't even know what is in their own dishes! AVOID, I think it's a money laundering scheme.
I had to check this place out after walking by many a time and I regret doing so. I was greeted by a walking cadaver who led me to a booth and dropped a menu. I tried the lamb ka-bob which was 90% fat and grizzle which left me nauseated. This place was DEAD with a capital D. How does it remain in business?
I've been a PSU student for two years and have been doing most of my drinking at the Cheerful Tortoise. Had I known about Mummy's sooner, I would have dropped the Cheerful T and its $6 cheese sticks like a stone.
For all you PSU students, you need to give Mummy's some love. It's right around the corner from the Clay building, the drinks are cheap, and the place is never ever full. It's a good place to unwind and do homework with a beer.
Nicer than its reputation would indicate. Empty can be a very good thing. Go here if you like privacy. Guy who was there running it was quite friendly as well. The specialty drinks are really quite good. I too wonder how it stays open, but I'm glad it does!
Kitchen is less than clean, hanging bar glasses are filthy. Place is always empty. Bellydancers? Eh...same group every week who should spend more time taking classes than "dancing" there. Best thing about this place is figuring how they stay open.
It's been quiet every time I've gone in there, but then again, I've never checked out this place on a weekend. I, too, have found the owners to be very friendly, and up for a conversation if you are. I LOVE their unique specialty drinks (the Cleopatra, for example), but of course, I'm a sucker for anything Egyptian. They've got very good Mediterranean eats, too.
I've only experienced watered-down drinks and complete lack of anything interesting in this place. It's got to be a money-laundering front, as NO ONE is EVER in there, yet it's been around for years and years. The "Friendly Place" review has to have been written by a shill. Don't believe it for a moment.
I went on a Saturday night. There were four other people there and you coud hear a pin drop. Where was the belly dancing? Where was the music?
This is a wonderful place to have a drink, have dinner or have fun. Saturday nights are always fun, when the belly dancers perform in their wonderful costumes to a variety of recorded middle eastern music. Mounir and Philip are very gracious hosts. Be sure to walk up to the bar to place your drink order. Mummy's is a very cozy and intimate place...where one can have as much privacy as desired...or mingle and party with the rest of the crowd.
