BarFly's Review of Nine Muses Acoustic Pub (CLOSED)
Now Closed
Dumpy, cramped, makeshift bar, already stuffed in an airless garret, quickly becomes unbearably oppressive during its pretentious boho hacks' overheated performances. Serious hippies suck. Mondays: open mic w/$60 prize for most popular. Tuesdays: free movies and poetry reading.
$1.50 select micro draft, $3.50 select tequila 5-9pm daily
I live just a few blocks from this place but have only been there once before as I wasn't impressed the first time with the pretense. The only reason I went last night was because a friend wanted to see an act they had booked there.
I was instantly put off by the bartender (who turns out to be one of the "partners".) As a bartender myself I firmly believe bartenders make of break a place and he was doing the 9 Muses no favors...
I asked if they had a specific type of vodka to which his response was that they get their liquor order tomorrow and were currently out. I started drinking a different bottle and quickly killed that as well and then got the same line about the trip to the liquor store being the following morning. Rather silly as the liquor store is only a mile from there establishment and if you want to make money you have to have the booze to sell. I watched him blow two different kegs and tell his customers the same line about beer deliveries being the following day.
The pours were inconsistent, tables remained dirty even though there was hardly anyone in there and the "partner" appeared to have skipped the shower before coming to work. Also, their patio has been shut down due to noise complaints and they haven't done a darn thing about it. I guess the plus side is that you can get tater tots served with anything they have on their menu...
I give this place 6 months (being a little generous) before they sell it to someone that maybe knows a little something about running a bar!
I've been to this place twice, and both times they were in construction mode. They seem genuinely concerned with making this a comfortable place to hang for anyone comfortable with this kind of place - fair enough! Acoustics were great in the stage room, stage is big enough for any acoustic act, and the sound system was run by an actual engineer - go figure! Artists seem to be treated very well - another plus. Didn't eat or drink there, but those I saw partaking seemed good with their poison of choice.
I have only been to this place once but I had a good experience. Yes there were hippies there but what can you expect from an acoustic pub? Anyway the hippies didn't smell so I was ok with that. The bartender was really cool and genuinely seemed to like his job which is a bit rare in Portland. The stage was a bit small but there is plenty of seating and the room had good acoustics. The band I saw was great. I probably won't go often but it is a unique bar and a nice change.
