BarFly's Review of Oaks Bottom Public House
Not, alas, a gay bar. The New Old Lompoc empire (Hedge House, 5th Quadrant … think McMenamin's without the hints of faded derangement) has finally expanded to what should’ve always been the central neighborhood for their peculiar fan base.
Sellwood’s long imagined itself the public house of Portland - musty, difficult, dully eccentric, and steeped in the sort of faux intellectual self regard that confuses unfashionable with unpretentious – and, since opening night, the residents have overcrowded the sort of place whose menu boasts a PABST (provolone, avocado, bacon, sprouts, tomato, yeesh) sandwich and whose bar avoids domestic lagers altogether to better hawk their viscous, over-hopped house brews.
The modern public house isn’t so much for the drinking, after all, but, for young couples insistently pretending to be middle aged British suburbanites, the cribbage flies free!

So, it is down in Sellwood, but worth the trip. One word my friend, Totchos. Tater tots drenched in all sorts of melted goodness. Good vegetarian food, cool staff, and really good guest taps along side the regular Lompoc choices. They are also one of the few places I have found to have Double Mountain brews on tap, the new brewery in Hood River.
