BarFly's Review of Ohm
Let us remember The Ohm as it was - not this re-animated corpse of the Voodoo Lounge's creeping Old Town dominion. Near a decade ago, as Portland slouched toward relevance, '80s rock survivor Dan Reed and friends transformed a struggling club under the Burnside Bridge into what seemed to these rustic eyes a thoroughly new blossom of edgy electronica and urbanite chic. A hothouse flower, we suppose. Reed was bought out by The Voodoo (name-change reportedly part of the contract) with whom The Ohm already shared a smoking porch, and thus began the steady and irreversible trudge of suburbanites fond of the permanently-affixed baseball cap and barely-covering-their-sizable belly tee to demand Top 40 and suck down Jager Bombs and AMFs and ... Zombies, yes.
Well now that there is DnB again there on Wed...I think the Ohm may start looking up. I HOPE!
True its not like it was. (man those were fun times), but I think more electronic junkies like myself are trying to do some thangs there.
Porltand has changed in past years. I can't even go to parties (raves) w/ out being surrounded by dumb ass jocks, thugs, bippies and what have you. Its sad. Hopefully we can take back our city. Slowly. Lets protest in the pearl!!
Oh and I hate the ladie's bathroom at the Ohm...ICK!

Ohm has its own persona once again! Thank God for the death of Voodoo. Its now a haven for artists and electronica combined with a series of other events. It is my Thursday night getaway where I can go to hear poetry, spoken word, music from local artists, etc. I even get the opportunity to perform there every now and again. I'm no one to promote, just simply a local poet, but I love the Ohm. Its a part of the artists community now, and I pray it forever stays that way!

i remember back in my wee years, coming to help some friends out who were working for a friend building his new bar...it became the ohm. now, what like 10 plus or so years later, i come back to get my groove on for a mark farina gig. it looks mostly the same, which is nostalgic for about 5 seconds until i get a little grossed out at that prospect.
i'm not sure if the lighting was in-house set, or if they brought in cans just for the farina spin, but it was really well done without being overwhelming. the dj platform was right in front, which gave a great opportunity to interact with the dj; he had a great visual on what beats got us off, and we could see some of the magic of the spin behind the decks. additionally from the side door to outside, one could see the dj mixing, flipping for records, etc. very cool setup.
the bartenders looked pretty good. i did not test their services other than for water, but they looked quick at mixing and didn't seem to skimp on the alchohol pours. it's mostly non-smoking, that is most people go out to the back deck to smoke, although there were the various in-the-moment light ups on the dance floor.
for this particular night, the crowd was mostly there to move, not for the hookups, although there were baseball cap dude wallflowers in the very back, and the occasional guy/gal couple out trolling for another chica to join them.

I was at the Ohm last Sat, and what was up with Asian Night, no offense, but the place was full of young Asian boys and girls looking like they were all there for their 21st B.Day. The music was a horrendous mutation of repulsive Hip-Hop and Rap. DJ, you need to go back to school.. Listen Ohm mngmnt, The "Ohm", is an electronic unit ,therefore why don't you make Saturday nights at least!! Electronica night, specifically Trance , and not the crap kids listen to at their first E-fueled rave. I'm talking about the hard-core stuff DJ Tiesto knocks out at gatherings in Ibiza, Amdam, England..Guys, I guarandamtee you, you'll set a new precedent in Portland. Just one night, thas all it'll take.

There are still some cool events at the ohm. You just have to know when they are and go then.
I'm not going to shamelessly use this to plug my event but if you like the old OHM there are events coming up that will take you back...
Mark Farina, went off when he was here, when I had Crystal Method it had the old vibe it used to have.

ohm used to be the place that you felt at home and could stay til 4 am.. hanging out dancing the night away. the staff all generally nice. no gropping. no frat boys. just nice fun people who all came together for the music.. then the frat boy scence from voodoo slowly leaked its uglyness on over to our side and there were fights and our home got invaded by idiots.. yes the idiots took over! how dare the ohm still all themselves the ohm. call it "this place has gone downhill and sold out"
shame on you ohm.. shame on you!
at least we have pala.. sort of.. nothing will ever be like the old ohm/cobalt days.. nothing!

Man, as long as you can end up "fuckin a hot chick" that place has gotta be cool. I think I will head out with my frat buddys in our Ambercrombie gear and looks for some hot action at the Ohm this weekend. Good lord, is this really what the Ohm is like now!? Hey Ohm, Gresham called and they miss their dance club! Go away.

The Ohm is doing good on the weekends as for the rest of the week we are making improvements and giving the old girl a face lift. As for "gay" door men ! I didnt know that sex was a issue. Now lets get one thing clear here Things have changed! were sorry if the old crowd dont like it. Things are safer. The sound system is better then ever. Security is Awesome. and service is better then that Dan Reed days. So please come in and check it out for your self. Also can be found on my space at http://www.myspace.com/ohmnightclub we thank you for your concerns and praises.

Yeah, I can't beleive the Ohm is no longer, at least in the sense that they no longer have live music, good DJs, etc. I figured it was somehow connected with the Voodoo lounge now, that place really sucks. Seems the new trend in Portland is moving away from live music and cutting edge DJs to top 40/cookie cutter BS you can find anywhere in the US. Portland used to be more original, now alot of the cool places are closing/changing their format and pretty much suck (see the new Dixie Tavern, aka Cobalt Lounge). Bring back the Rawk venues!!!

The ohm hasn't been the "ohm" since new years day.
Dan Reed got bought out on his half by the jack asses at voodoo, and therefore screwed over as well, he finally got is cut and now is vacationing in India and doing well, he was supposed to originally leave in like April.
It is nothing bore than another rich kid commercial frat party room that the fucks at voodoo get to roam over too when they get bored with that dump.
Same shitty DJ's play the same shitty recycled top 40 "rap" every 3 days of the week their open, sometimes the same songs twice in a night.
The bartenders are cool though, they are leftovers from the Ohm.
And the fuckwads that own the voodoo/ohm still have the nerve to call it Ohm, they were supposed to change the name as well as remodel after new years. It's more of a dump know then ever it was when it was the Ohm, and that's saying a lot.
Stay away! unless you like that kinda crap, then fuck off.

This place used to be cool until they started hiring doorboys who just finished their 2 free training sessions at 24 Hour Fitness and barely fill out their puny ribbed shirts while they gasp at the audacity that despite their Associate's Degree and their nifty bouncer job they still haven't gotten laid without paying for it. Seriously, they run the door like it's the Viper Room and it was so much cooler when it wasn't trying to be...
