BarFly's Review of Paragon Club (CLOSED)
Closed! But we saved our old review for posterity. It was awesome. You missed out.
The metal gate through which prospective customers must be buzzed inside seems less crackhead-averting practicality than inner-city signifier these days, but The Paragon yet maintains a dangerous allure for all the karaoke and queer dance nights. Cheap drinks still draw a vibrantly mixed crowd (tending toward post-collegiate rockers during concerts), cell phones still draw glares and the back patio remains vacant.
Things go forward and all happens for a reason. Yes the Paragon has closed but as the wondrous Bettie Mayhem said... life carries on at the Interstate!
Yes, kids it's closed... However, your favorite bartenders and KJ are all at the Interstate Bar & Grill (4234 N. Interstate). Carrie is there Mon. thru Wed. Laura is there Thurs. thru Sat. Coming up this Saturday (08/11/08) Kaustic Karaoke is back with Me, Bettie Mayhem, your friendly neighborhood K.J. Come one come all to the Karaoke Ball!!! Black Tie/Gowns are optional; BUT very encouraged!!!! I'll be there with sequins/tiarra/roller skates. Jack, the owner, is very excited about the changes that will eventually morph his bar!! It will be better than the Paragon could ever hoped to have been, my Lil' Kool Kats & Pussy Kats. So tell every ear that will listen cause we all have a new home...
I am so sad it's closed. One of my favorite places, with the best f*ckin' KJ in all of Portland and great staff.
Sorry you guys got the shaft. That sucks.
So...incase you don't know, the owner of the Paragon died a few months ago and his daughter who doest give a f*ck about the place just sold it to PCC. She didn't give anyone any notice, and well...the college...they just want to use the parking lot. It is sad to lose this place. As seedy and crusty as it was, it was a great place. Alot of my customes became great friends who I will miss greatly.
i live a few blocks away and this is my favorite bar. best prices, most interesting people, fun kariokee. sketchy as shit...i love it.
Whats up with all the miserable fat rocker chicks feeding at a trough of gossip. Awesome Bartenders and cool atmosphere I was just disturbed by the group of cows angrily feeding of eachother.
Definately a dive bar, lots of regulars, yuppies and hipsters go there irregularly, the florida room is more there gig, or the new mcmenimans, but to hell with them. KJ Betty kicks ass and you can sing Motorhead. There really isn't any drink specials and fod is usually from 10 pm til 130 am on karaoke or show nights otherwise is the fried food fare, but you can have bbq, chinese, and pizza delivered.
okay...so maybe I shouldn't write a review for the bar I work at...but I feel like the Paragon has changed alot and folks need to know what's up! We have lots of punk/rock/metal bands play, HAVOC on tuesdays is our Queer Night, Karaoke Wed-Sat with Miss Bettie Mayhem! Come check out the new system..she has lots of songs, and can get anything you request. Always lookin' for more bands, and DJ's. Come in and see me Mon-Wed I'm behind the bar or call the booking line 503-803-5878.
True, they have to buzz you in. But false, it keeps the crackheads out. I cant say Ive ever seen the bartender refuse someone entry. The Paragon Club is the new home to alot of the old Jockey club regulars, so lets just say theres alot of history. Great KJ though, and youll get to sing more than just a couple songs, too. Remember to say hello to George.
Paragon not for the faint at heart. Don't go here to eat the food is so-so deep fried wonders. Drinks are stiff, staff buzzes you in to keep the crackheads out most days and nights. PBR affordable, Whiskey Sours a great choice. All and all the atmosphere is OK, the band / music keep the place humming along with good service from MEL.
