BarFly's Review of Red Eye Lounge
Without a doubt there are plenty of things for this bar to work on. But I have to say that OTHER than the entertainment director, (who is not likely to last much longer anyway) This bar is not run by a bunch of haters And indeed most of its staff are either queer or friendly enough that you would think they were. Excelent food and good service. Not tweekers. Pot heads, YES but not tweeks. Maybe a few coke heads.

This cute little bar has a good space, decent music (usually... whoever books the deejays needs to be more consistent). Great staff, and some of the best bar food around, as they make everything TO ORDER BY HAND. They still have some improvements to make as they continue to build upon the Amazon foundation.
Let's address the "gay" discrimination issue: The entertainment director is stupid. His opinion has nothing to do with the bar as a whole, nor is it the same as the staff or most of the regulars. The rest of the staff is queer or super-queer-friendly. I am a professional female impersonator and have never felt uncomfortable or had comments made. I've stopped in here before performances to see my friends that work here and had a great time. The staff and owners are well aware of the impression someone like the entertainment guy makes.
Check it out for yourself before allowing the opinions of someone else to lead you astray.

I'm not sure where the two below me get off saying that the bar isn't gay-friendly, that's the FURTHEST thing from the truth! Every time I show up I get a smile, I get my drink fast, I get conversation, I get bitchin' food if I'm hungry, and I'll even show up if I'm broke because the prices are THAT GOOD. It's fun. But don't let me sell you, show up and see for yourself.

as someone who is employed at the red eye not all of the employees feel the same way as the entertainment director and we openly and warmly embrace any and all people who want to come out and have a nice time in a safe atmosphere where ALL PEOPLE can freely interact and congress

I agree!!
To think that a bar in 2008 in Downtown Portland would cancel a night because they don't want to be known as a gay bar, is reprehensible. This is 2008 and not 1955 Birmingham or 1968 New York, right? I am as of now, making it my goal to boycott and encourage others to boycott the Red-Eye. This is in the same vein as hiring a Black DJ and discovering (surprise!)many of the people that come to see the person are Black, then saying you don't want to be a Black club so, see ya! To make this decision is not only discriminatory, but bad business sense.
PS To the owners/entertainment director: Gay people have, on average, 2 times the disposable income as straights. Also, they tend to be VERY LOYAL to welcoming bars. Oh, and, we have better shoes than you and, probably, a bigger d**k.

I personally will never set foot in this establishment due to their not wanting their bar to inhabit gays.... I don't go where I'm not wanted and I don't stand for discrimination. They ended a queer dance party night there called Tribe because the booker didn't want their establishment coming across as a place that gay people hang out at. Um, idiot, money is green and it will do all the talking for us. Are you going to put up a drinking fountain soon that says, "Gays Only Drinking Fountain"?? If you aren't keen on discrimination and all it's forms, boycott this place!
