BarFly's Review of Rheinlander & Gustav's

It's a theme-park Deutschland and no mistake, but, taking advantage of a neighborhood weakness (as you'd expect, really) - no proper local - Gustav's has assembled a loyal following within their authentically prefab beer-hall. Attached to the Rheinlander, flagship of Horst Mager's burgeoning empire, the food is an obvious attraction. Their happy hour specials draw schnitzel-addicts from across the river, and there are few sights more delicious than a fondue-spattered hipster. Excellent, dirt cheap happy hour menu, well-trained staff, and extensive micro and import beer and wine selection. Heavy on the family values, The Rheinlander and Gustav's will impress your grandparents, and keep your kids entertained; the delights of the happy hour menu (served 3-6pm) may be enjoyed minus the bluehairs and rugrats, when it's served late-night, 9pm-close (usually not much later than midnight).

BEST HAPPY HOUR!!!

Portland's best kept secret! Best Happy Hour EVER! Love the atmosphere... laid back, young, and hip. My Go-To for Happy Hour!!!

great place

hey sure it's cheezy, but what do you expect from a german beer hall in Portland? The happy hour is pretty much the only time to come to this place. a good selection of imported beers on tap and reasonable prices on food. I recommend the schnitzel or sausage duo.

Cheese + Beer = FUCK YES

One of the best happy hours in town. Four steins of dark beer and enough fondue and sausage to make two people sick for under thirty bucks, you cannot beat that.

Mmmm, BEER!

This place is a beer paradise. Tons of delicious german imports served in HUGE steins. (32oz?) I tried a few of them and they were all delicious. After that I headed into the Rheinlander for some of their renowned fondue and literally the best lamb shank I have ever tasted. A perfect night out.

great happy hour, worst service

I don't think I need say much more, but truly, the last four times I went to Gustav's, we had the worst service. The last time it took us forty-five minutes to get our drinks served--after the fondue arrived! The bartenders have always been great, though, and the cocktails, great beer selection, and damn tasty food make Gustav's worth it. Almost. Try the Chicken Schnitzel Caesar.

mmm, fondue!

Love, love, love the fondue. I go during happy hour and get a fondue with sausage on the side, and eat it all by myself! With a great dark beer (bier) on the side. Bring a friend; place always makes me happy and the patio is a nice place during summertime.
