BarFly's Review of Roots Organic Brewery
Oregon's first all organic brewery has an island vibe, complete with brightly painted walls in the rasta palette and surfboard tap handles. One could almost expect sand instead of floors and a thatched roof here.
Small but open space contains the city's tallest bar with chairs low enough to make you feel like a toddler again. Several large picnic tables make it good for groups. Smoking allowed at tables outside on the sidewalk, perfect for soaking up some rays on a warm summer afternoon, brah!
Five standard beers with favs like Habenero Stout and Toasted Coconut Porter rotating seasonally. Friendly staff, eclectic crowd of regulars, and kids allowed until 9. -Strack Currently undergoing expansion - doubling in size. $3.50 imperials 10pm-12am Mon-Thurs.

Hey everyone, thanks for the years of support and the nice reviews. And thanks to the barfly for always keeping the public informed on all the great spots in Portland. As some of you may know and for those who don't, Roots has gone through some rough patches. We've weathered some crazy rumors, a partner split up, financial difficulties and much more, but we've survived! I just want to let all our supporters know about some of the changes we've made. We've improved our kitchen and added a new menu. Changed our hours and added daily specials 7 days a week. We've really ramped up our service, music and of course our beers. For more info go to, rootsoragnicbrewing.com Thanks and see you at roots
I love this place, especially on Aloha Tuesdays, when pints go for $2.50. I used to live in Hawaii, and it was never that nice. The organic beers are great. There's a sour brown one that's wonderful. The high bar counter and low seats feel silly. There's no way to get somber with your beer when your elbows are resting on a surface just below your neck. The bartenders are very friendly. The feeling is relaxed. There's a nice picture of Amsterdam on the back wall. It's everything I like about East Portland. There's no need to go over those bridges, except maybe to buy a Parisian baguette at Ken's Artisan Bakery. Oh - did I mention the $10 pitchers on Sundays? Drink. Then go home and eat the bread. That's the Lord's Supper.
Very good beer, au natural, tastey tastey beverages, comfortable feeling place, good folks, good music, all around sweeet!!
If your tired of boring cookie cutter brews that are more careful than flavorful, Roots is your answer. They use top shelf ingredients that are sometimes on the exotic side. You'll find yourself asking "they put that in beer?". The results are fearless brews that work. Favorites include the Habenero Stout, Apricot Wheat, Epic Ale, Roots Pale, Suds Lager........ah forget it every one of their beers deserves mention here.
I was surprised by the crowd that was here when I went for the Belgian Brew Fest. It mas mostly older (age 50+) adults. The beer is delicious, especially the IPA. The food is basically limited to wraps, salads, and sandwiches, so carnivores like myself are confined in terms of dining options.
Roots is just a few blocks from my apartment, so I sometimes swing by for a late afternoon pint. The beer here is great (try the Milk Stout when it's in season - fantastic), service is always prompt and friendly, and they've got free WiFi, to boot!
