BarFly's Review of Sabala's (CLOSED)
Under new ownership and name: See Mt. Tabor Legacy
This is pre-ownership change:
(AKA The Mount Tabor) Sabala’s barely survived its first two years, but it seems to be coming of age, of late. With a new itinerary of weekly events bolstering its already enviable calendar of touring bands and local acts, Sabala’s is finding its place, as both a neighborhood hang and a destination location.
The smaller “Sideshow Lounge” is open, sans cover, every night of the week at six p.m., with the spacious performance hall open as acts permit (cover varies). Pool x1, Sopranos pinball, and various video games tucked away here and there. Some of Portland’s favorite servers man the bars here, so even on an off night, you’ll find good company.
Two-for-ones (or doubles) for regular price on all domestic beer and well drinks 6-9pm everynight. The following weekly events are all held in the Sideshow Lounge (check http://www.sabalasmttabor.com for schedule of live acts in the main room). Mondays: Grandma-approved bingo and a cheery selection of old country tunes with DJ Stone Cold. Tuesdays: Punk rock and glam dominate the turntables. Wednesdays: Bingo, the Sequel. Thursdays: Karaoke with a rotating selection of local rockstar hosts.
Some Saturdays: Chad & Mike's 80s Night
Angelo's, Bar of the Gods (BOG), Dingo's, Por Que No? Otra Vez, Sapphire Hotel, Sewickly's Addition, Space Room, Tanker, Watertrough, Zach's Shack
Well the sale is complete and I for one am hopeful Jason Sabala takes his family on a much needed vacation w/ the money they obtained in the sale of the business.Dawning the new owner chick has since taken possession and with out much to say did a much needed douching of the space. The sideshow was closed due to cleaning this weekend but will reopen to the sounds of the returning 80's night this saturday w/ DJ Gravylegs/DJ Thumper and a four band rock/rockabilly line up including Dead Mans Hand in the main room.Come feel it out,we'll all soon see.The best of luck to Jason,Zoelle, and their daughter in the future w/ whatever they choose to do..
Just not going to be the same when this place goes.Been my second home for the last 2 1/2 yrs.The good news is it won't be gone for (6) more months....whew!
Really going to miss this place. It grows on you. Not just anyone can bring good bands into a SE residential hood and still keep the peace with everyone... but Sabala did. Not everyone has the vision of what could be. Most don't even try, Sabala did. No doubt someone will team up with Jason Sabala (if they are smart)and we once again will have a kick ass live venue in the future.
I have seen many kickass metal shows at Sabalas. I hope the new owner keeps the faith and continues to welcome the METAL!
Sucks but true, the bar is up for sale but is roarin on and shows are still being booked.. so enjoy while you can!
Always a fun, fun place- the type of place where you walk out and don't remember going in. But the place needs a lot of work. It's always freezing, the bathroom is a sorry, sorry mess, and everything is just worn out, broken, etc... I hope that the sale leads to just a little TLC. That's all they need. And less death metal, but hey, that's a personal preference. I saw an Oasis movie here, so I can't complain.
Some of you mentioned it's either closing or for sale? Is this true? Every favorite bar of mine either closes, moves, or is sold off and sucks (Jeanne's, Biddy's, Satyricon etc).
Wow, somebody sure has their panties in a bunch "jtotheizzo" or is it Jen of barfly fame?Thats funny, while your at it go ahead and censor this like all the other good stuff written by fans of this bar and of the guys's "ridiculous 80's night...funny I dont remember ever going to the Meow wed. and seeing more then 10 people, not to mention the volume headache, before my girlfriends and I left and went to Spaceroom...Hmmmmm...something to think about.why is that?Sounds like you just like to hate.....
I just loved this bar! I found that the mens bathroom is a good place to make new friends. The guys there are really friendly and like to help you out in any way they can! Sabala's is my new favorite hang out! for sure!
I don't think it is because they are closing (they are for sale dimwit) but rather because the guy who is keeping the website up is not doing his job... do ya think?
maybe because the bar is closing and 80's night just isn't that rad? Actually, it's pretty ridiculous.
Still no mention of Mike and Chad on Saturday nights? Why is that?Still great night w/ these guys only a different night...
How come there's no mention of Chad,Mike and Susan's weekly 80's night every sunday in the sideshow? They have been killin it since I think April and you don't even list them!I go on a weekly or at least bi-weekly basis and it's always goin off.Sabala usually ends up on the pool table doing some flashdance routine.Recognize the real DJ's please..especially on Sabala's best weekly night.thanks for listening, and hope you hear this.
Last sunday in the side show was kicking but get that ac fixed man!!! Mike and Chad (yeah I know em)spin some of the best mash in Portland. They do it every Sunday night till about 1am. They live and breath music, thats why they are the best. And I have to give special mention to chad's girlfriend Christy who puts up with his late nights with a smile. Zoell's bar menu rock's!!! How does she do it at those cheap prices we will never know. Keep it up. Oh, Hi Chris,Rebecka, and JD.
there's nothin g like getting wasted, throwing on 3d glasses, and talkin to the neon walls in the middle of the night
Dear Sabala family- Are you comming home for the holidays? If not please send pictures. We might need a favor if you are able. Tony's brother Tom has cancer. Can you guys get w/ any singer? May it be country? We are having a fund raiser for him on Jan 7. He went to Mexico for a desperate attempt to get better. 30G's out of pocket. He loves Toby Keith, and the phone call would be a huge seller at the fund raiser. If you can Jason or Zoelle please let us know. You guys are the only people I know that know famous people. If you get this and you have no connections-------send hoodies as asked! We're great billboards!(Ha) Love You Guys--Merry X-Mas The Stormers
This is the one place in Postland to consistantly see some hard core folks! And the remodeling is great too. Plus, they have Cider on tap! I give Sabalas 5 stars! A refreshing change of pace from the norm.
I happened upon Portland Organic Wrestling (POW) after a few beers and a suggestion at a party earlier. I hate wrestling and I was a little concerned I was showing up to that local wrestling gig I see on channel 11, which didn't have me none to excited. However, when I learned that this was not that kind of wrestling event, and it was in fact strictly a platform in which to justify throwing Pabst on the wrestlers, my frown turned upside down. I'd hit it again.
I think Black Halos are gonna rock Sabalas Thursday Aug 25!!
Who's goin? It's a warm up to their Nationwide US Tour with Die Hunns (duane peters) Sept 4
