BarFly's Review of Sapphire Hotel
An air of romance pervades the Sapphire, with its above-bar bedroom diorama, artful assortment 45-10 menu, of antiques, small zigzag bar, and a cozy wood stove anchoring a charming conversation area. Expensive eyewear crowd canoodles quietly over well-crafted cocktails ($5 premium well), and small plates. Sidewalk seating available, given the weather. Live jazz and acoustic acts booked sporadically.

Not a bad place, and I've always had good service from the staff. But the place is as boring as a poetry reading at Powell's. And yes, it is fine for a date, but at that point why not impress by just going over to NW 21st where there are a half dozen much better places? Drinks are a bit pricey too for SE...
It's an elegant place that seems perfect for a date. May not be a surprise to most, but there is no actual hotel here. I stopped in on a week day just as they opened and enjoyed the mellow scene. I took advantage of the Happy Hour deals and washed down their tasty salmon cakes with a couple of tallboy PBR's. Very nice servers. Definitely worth going back in the evening to see how the vibe changes when there's a crowd.
It is the closest whisky bar to my domicile up on the Tabor. This is why I choose to drink here. Non-smoking is a plus, but I can light up outside. Good for a cocktail or two and a warm plate when I don't want to head up the hill and call it a night just yet. "A real classy jernt", also has a coffee place next door now, which may seem like overkill here in Portland. Just a wee bit? But it is worth the stumble. Ethanol+Nicotine+Caffeine=Happy Boy.
Yes, I know, my obsessive compulsive ass has already posted, but I LUUU ME SOME SAPPHIRE HOTEL! Food, drinks, service, atmosphere, music is just awesome. Ok, I'm done stalking the Sapphire...for now :)
The bartender added an $8 tip for an $8 tab. That's 100% gratuity for serving two customers one round. Really now, does that fly in Portland? Instead of correcting the obvious mistake on my credit card, I should have called over a manager. Haven't been back since though.
ok, ill admit, im pretty damn picky...as a gay man, portland night life just leaves me a little disappointed, but this place never fails to impress...good service, great drinks, awesome ambience and kick ass food...drawback: portions are a bit small for the price (i'm a big boy who will pay for larger portions, wink wink)...BUT...this place is kick-ass. order "the vamp"....port, vodka and creme de cassis...AKA, heavin in a martini glass...WHOOP WHOOP!
I was visiting a friend who lives close to 50th and Hawthorne last night. We attempted to get into Apizza Scholls, but to no avail. Anyway, I suggested that we check out The Sapphire Hotel. We walked in and sat at the bar, as the place was packed. Chimay on tap was a VERY pleasant surprise. before ordering, we walked around and asked a few people what they were eating and what they would suggest. Everyone was happy to give some input and we seemed to leave every table with a smile.
We had an antipasta platter to start and my friend and I had the POMEGRANATE GLAZED HANGER STEAK served on a sweet potato mash. It was so good. The vibe there was great. It way up on my list of places to take people.
PS - The bartender was so much fun!
I dig this place. Have gone there for a few first dates. Food and drinks are excellent and not too spendy during happy hour. Not crowded during the week. Decent service too.
I dropped by this place on my way somewhere else by bike. I would have felt really dumb going inside in my cycling get-up, people looked pretty well-groomed. I was there during happy hour and the food was a really excellent deal. We got the house salad and the ahi plate, both were excellent. Drinks were priced well for happy hour, too. I like that it's located on Hawthorne, but far enough up to be out of all the crazy traffic and parking difficulties etc.
