BarFly's Review of Scandals

(note: recently moved to space formerly occupied by Three Sisters) A favorite of many for its hot bartenders, cheap, strong drinks, and more laid-back, convivial crowd than that of some of its hit-'em-&-quit-'em neighbors. Closing in on its 30th anniversary. Open noon-2:30am everyday. $1.50 pints noon-8pm M-F & all day Sunday. Tuesdays: $1 well.

Ugh...

This place fuckin' sucks...weak drinks, horrible service from half-baked queens who power bottom in dark alleys for meth...how does this place stay open? Tries hard to be a San Fran bar but falls short every time...don't get me wrong, i love a crack addicted power bottom as they are endlessly entertaining, but dozens of them just grosses me the fuck out. And there are always a group of trolls looking for an escort...avoid and hit up Boxxes instead, at least it's non smoking and drinks are better

Homeyness

Call me crazy but there is something homey about scandals that makes me love it. It is the one bar that I love ot pick up a beer sit down zombie out and stick in deep tought or hopefully talk up someone into converstation. the bartenders are always nice treat you nice no matter what and sure no cigars, but hey I don't really appreciate a stogie lit up right next to me even though i indulge myself, there is a time and place for everythig. also Scandals is one of my favorite people watching places, i mean how many places on stark still really invest much though into sidewalk seating?

Yes or no-- no gray

"Encourage the anti-smoking attitude of the bartenders"? Then why don't they just adopt a no-smoking policy. What the hell. A bar cannot allow smoking and then have anti-smoking policy working at it, it doesn't make sense. No, it's not a review for smoking lounges, but the snotty attitude I experienced and witnessed begged the mention. Who complements on cigarettes? You smell them everywhere you go. Cigarette smokers should realize that. Every year the tobacco police come down harder and harder on smokers in general. By "snubbing" pipe and cigar folks, you are turning a would-be ally into a not so sympathetic by-stander. Many of the cicarette smoking patrons in these places are not looking very far ahead.

my style

Being someone that has been out to any gay bar only twice before scandals, I just wanted to give my unbiased "newby" opinion. I am a non-smoker, but guys... don't bitch about something that is common throughout most bars, cigarette smoke. Scandals (new location, never went to the old one), is nice because young guys like me aren't always stalked and nearly molested like a lot of the other bars out there. The environment is friendly and generally offers a very mixed crowd. It's nice to go to a bar that has both flamboyant and masculine acting men that are mature enough to not slober over eachother when they find an attraction. And as many have stated, the staff is awesome, friendly, and attractive which can be very distracting when trying to save money or stay sober. This bar has completely changed my view of Portland's gay scene.

gawd, the smoke!

I was at Scandals last week for only about a half-hour before the cigarette smoke drove me out. Truly awful. Too bad, as this is a fun, friendly and stylish (compared to the old Scandals) gay bar. I recommend going during the summer when they have the big folding doors open and the smoke is not nearly as annoying (and dangerous).

Scandal's

I for one encourage the anti-smoking attitude of the bar and it's staff (although I've never witnessed it). Is this a review of bars or smoking lounges? I find Scandals to be a safe, clean place with a great staff. Have never had a problem there (old site included). The new location reminds me of an episode of Trading Spaces...which is a good thing, I think. Hanging pendant lights, flat screen TV's (televisions...not Transvestites - although that would be interesting), clean bathrooms, plenty of seating, late night food available, large curved bar, ceiling to floor windows (doors that open to the sidewalk), pool table. Did I mention the friendly staff?! There's a reason this bar's been around so long. I'm sorry it took me so long to find it. See you there.

Tobacco nazis

MANY different kinds of beer on tap but they lost me when they revealed they were smoking nazis and another other than domestic cigarettes was forbidden. I smoke a pipe (tobacco, you dork) and the only complaints I've ever had were people saying they hated the smell before I'd even lit up. In other words, illigitimate complaints. When you divide the smoking community against itself, in this anti-tobacco age, you turn a would-be ally into an indifferent bystander. Bad attitudes suck, try another bar.

scandalous

Scandals is a fun place with pool, video games,darts,2 bars. It is the only bar with semi-comfortable sort-of couches(back bar) bartenders are very nice and the customers are too. a nice place to escape to when the crowds and noise at Silverado get to be too much.
