But of course! Who wouldn’t want to pay to flip their own pancakes? After all, it’s not like the average family can afford cutting edge technology like “griddles” or “batter,” let alone hone the necessary skills to put them together.

But then, to complain is to overlook that what’s being sold here is not food but an experience and a perhaps necessary distraction, along the lines of farm-fresh U-Pick-‘Em strawberries and Korean hotplates; it’s kitsch as family bonding, fun for the kids or morning-after diversion for last night’s drunken date. It’s also a nice place to work on your underchin tan line, as the heat wafts up from your table.

Slappy Cakes is fun in the way that miniature golf is fun, sustained by nostalgic vapors of romantic self-as-child; it’s a DIY grandma’s house freed of anything as distracting as history. In a city of unfamilied transients, this is no small service. And of course, Ma never made the Bloody Marys quite right; Slappy’s has bacon.
