BarFly's Review of Sloan's Tavern
A vintage gem, this early riser (open at 7am, closes by 3pm) is well-worth setting the alarm for - setting foot in the perfectly preserved interior is like taking a step back in time, to 'round about 1950. Its ancient jukebox, alone, is worth your while - an animatronic band "plays" your selections (a choice assortment, natch). Watch your language, and mind your p's and q's - the been there and done that staff have a low tolerance for loud-mouth upstarts.
Sloan's is so good that I hate to share. Whenever I have out-of-town guests I take them there, and frankly I drag all of my local pals, too. It looks like a cross between the Regal Beagle and your grandmother's living room, circa 1977. All that's missing are the glass grapes. Seriously, the kitschy wall hangings alone are enough to bring me back again and again. They only serve beer and wine "on tap" (avoid the wine, unless you like your Almaden with bubbles), they allow smoking (hooray for freedom of choice!) and the bartendress is incredibly friendly and always remembers what you're drinkin. They have the world's worst selection on the jukebox, but it's free, and what the heck, they do have "I Love a Rainy Night" and the entire Huey Lewis "Sports" album, + Zeppelin, so maybe it's not that bad... Anyhoo, this is a place that attracts regulars; it's comforting, neighborhoody and a hidden gem. I pray it doesn't fall prey to the Beaverton-bred douchebaggery that's slowly invading my neighborhood, mostly courtesy of Vendetta (though the owners are nice, the clientele, not so much.) Sigh.
