BarFly's Review of Steinhaus (CLOSED)
Renamed and reopened in summer 2010 as The Agenda.
BarFly's last review of Steinhaus:
Owned by the longtime former manager of downtown's Candlelight, the blues are alive and well here at this down-to-earth hangout. Tight space means you walk through the dancefloor (and maybe the band) upon entry, but being in close-quarters with some of Portland's best musicians is nothing to complain about.
Side gameroom with pool x2, darts x1, and nice patio outback (complete with classic breaching whale mural, no less!) offer a bit more elbow room. Live blues every night, never a cover. Solid '80s juke (every single GNR album!). Well from $2.50, beer from $1.75, regularly.

Stein Haus recently remodeled, opened up more by relocating the womens restroom and removing the video poker machines. They have a live dj that spins some pretty dope tracks to get the crowd dancing. The stage has been moved to the back and the pool table moved over to the other side of the back room. With no more smoking in bars this is the place to be. Now if i can just get them to sell buffalo jerky, all would be good.
I'm so sad to see where this bar has gone. It was a great place to go and know the regular crowd would be there now they have mostly gone different directions. Drove by the other night not even a car in lot. This use to be a great place to hang out. I'm so sad to see what it has become.
The Steinhaus was a favorite place to go have a beer and fun in the early 60's. There was a group of us who never missed a weekend there. Now we are all married with children and "sigh" grandchildren and most have moved away. However we are planning a trip to Portland and I have to stop with my husband and have raise a beer to good times with good people. Nancy
I have to agree with the last 3 comments. This place has really turned into a dive. I stopped going there as well. To bad, because it was a fun place at one time.
I been 2 this bar a couple of times and found i was asking my self why. new to the portland area had heard alot about this place. don;t know what they saw but i did;nt see it. no people at the bar,a few people playing a video game. what a DUMP!!!!!!!!! get something going people, if i wanted to nap i would have stayed home! good luck. who ever owns this bar sell to some one who will do something with it.
ps BORING
Once upon a time this place had a new owner named Jim who brought in some great rock and blues bands on the weekends and weeknights and it was a lot of fun, but then he sold to new owners who kept the music around for a while, but then one day they decided to stop doing this except on Sundays and now boys and girls it's not much fun anymore. THE END
I stopped by Thursday to see the Hauscats play, but to my suprise I was told they're no longer there. This place used to have good bands on the weekends and the house bands on Thursday and Sunday, now it's just Sundays with Bolt Upright which I like. This place has gone down the crapper fast, it's just a boring neighborhood bar again with the exception of Sunday night, but I'm sure that will end in the near future. All the women bartenders are gone as well. Stay clear of this place unless you like looking at male bartenders and listen to the regulars at the middle table talk about sports for hours at a time. Boring!!!
I love this place and go there every time I'm in town. The last time I was in there I was looking for my favorite bartender, Tasha...and they told me she doesn't work there any more...all hush hush and all that. I can't believe it, she was the best thing that place had going. She is so friendly and makes you feel like every day is a party. No one can make my favorite Long Islands like her. If anyone knows where this great lady landed please post it here so I can find her and a new bar home! Whoever took her place just doesn't cut it, it's not the same without Tasha there. It's a fun place, but they've really lost a good thing when they let her walk out the door. I miss you Tasha!!!
This is a great neighborhood spot with some great beers on tap. Awesome music selection on Jukebox(which is usually free on the weekends). The crowd is great for being on 82nd. Their chicken wings are tasty and only 25 cets a wing on Mondays.
This place used to be a great place for music on the weekends with some great bands, but unfortunately that's very rare anymore and it's just another boring place. They've lost a lot of good customers because of this, including myself. I'll come back when the musics back.
The stein haus is my favorite place to be on a Sunday night. the $6 pitchers of PBR only make the incredible jam band Bold Upright even more amazing. They are a great mix of old and new. They simply can't beat. very friendly staff and patrons. a great place to be all the way around.
Fun place with a good friendly feel. The atmosphere is comfortable neighborhood bar. They have great local music and stiff dranks.
I just returned from a very fun night listening to Bolt Upright tear up the Stein Haus. There were a bunch of big ole smiles atop shakin butts and the band be pumpin! Sarah did a good job behind the bar and the Full Moon crowd took care of the rest.-anna
The place is a lot of fun on weekends.bands are good, most people are friendly.theres a chuncky gal with big black hair who sits at the bar on saturdays nites, stay--away! shes not friendly.
I've been going there for a few years now and I have to say that they have some of the best music. Blues and rock like Lloyd Jones on Mondays, Haus Cats on Thursdays and Kenzel and Hyde on Sundays plus really good bands on the weekends like Bad Motorscooters, Bolt Upright, Aaron Black and many others. It may be small but,It's a fun place with friendly people. Good bartenders Check it out.
The white haired cocktail waitress gets you a drink tomorrow...very very slow. agaonizingly slow unless your a regular there. the Yanks used to play there, not lately though the best band playing there is Lloyd Jones and that other band I cant remember their name, oh year Sinners club, if sinners club is playing you gotta request a rolling stones song they will play it for ya
i like it when it is raining and there is no where to go because they dont charge cover.
I wish they did.
The place is small. It's a dive. I love it. It's one of the funnest places in Portland. The place gets so crowded you don't know who you're dancing with, which makes it very cozy and you meet more people. They have good bands there. My favorite Band that plays at Steinhaus is Bolt Upright...the guy that plays guitar and sings, damn he's hot. I love a good guitar. check out Steinhaus. It's fun!!!
