BarFly's Review of Sundown Pub
A critical summary of the movie The River Why starring William Hurt (Filmed at the Sundown) would probably have more substance than a review of this friendly little St. Johns dive, so here we go: The movie is based on a book about the quest for an elusive trout, which is possibly the lamest metaphor for self-knowledge used in film since the bonzai tree in Karate Kid III.
However, if you must know about the place, you'll kind the inner confines cozy and charming. The staff...equally so. 1x Pool Homemade organic vegetarian menu and bloody Mary mix+ tamales from La Hacienda. Features live music on Tuesdays

All you need to know -
1. Great bar food. Some of the best I have had. 2. Friendly bartender (and cute, to boot). 3. Decent beer selection 4. Fairly strong cocktails
Ever had truffle oil in your mac and cheese? This food is all hand made like a meal you would make for a famous chef. From the ingredients, to the cooking techniques, to the mentality behind the menu this is the BEST bar food I have ever eaten. To top it off half the menu is vegan/vegetarian. But this food is anything but bland or boring. If you go have Wydra the chef/fresh flower provider/reason I go there/etc. describe the dish you are about to eat. It is the most deliciously divine and dirty descriptions of food you have ever heard and the flavor does not disappoint. It lives up to the description and then some. They also have pudding shots. Like their cousin jello shots these are potent and tasty but unlike jello shots there are never watery and creative flavors abound. My favorite is still the chocolate.
SUMMARY: Great food, great drinks, great prices, great service. COMMENTS: This is our newest "find" here in North Portland, and we just love this place. The carpets are clean and the walls, comfortably uncluttered. Walk further back and you get the feeling this might be some sort of "man cave" what with the big chairs plopped in front of the big screen t.v. beyond the pool table. But if this is a guy's guy place, it also has a feminine feel to it that refines the place and boosts it way beyond your typical Lombard Street tavern: there are fresh flowers in both restrooms! This is no dive. The menu is (mostly) new everyday and merely posted on a whiteboard at the end of the bar--hug trees, don't cut them. We like the hearty and fair-priced soups (a clam chowder and way-beyond-broth tortilla-chicken-veggie soup). Entrees are veggie only and creative carnivore fare. James is the cook, and a Navy veteran, and he rocks it with the broccoli salad and veggies au gratin. The carrot cake was off the hook, super-dense and not one of those all-crumbly or fall apart-y ones like the office chips in on and buys for your co-worker on his birthday. We actually had to chew it. When was the last time you honestly masticated a slice of carrot cake vs. simply closing your mouth and letting the thing dissolve in there? Cream cheese frosting was also delish'. Drinks are honest--greyhounds in a pint glass with a liberal free pour are tasty and $4.50(?). We also tried something called a "pink panties," which was basically a dry vodka martini with a dash of rose hips-flavored sweet water (from Lebanon) added. Pretty awesome. Goes down easy without being sweet. Bartenders hump it behind the bar and on the floor solo, so they earn your tips. Jodie and Liz rock.
Such a nicer place the Jack & Jerry's! Tony the bartender does a kick ass Long Island. Good mix of people, pool table and decent juke!
Sundown pub Lives! The new owners Julian and Wy have purged the filth, the fogies, and the tweekers from the building. It is clean, comfy, and possible to hear each other talk. The food is good, and the people that work there and hang out there, are all very nice.We love the fresh flowers, and cute Tommy on Thursday night. They also open the pool table up when they know we'll be awhile!
