That’s right kids, Tony’s back in town! The hippest hepcat of them all has returned to our stormy little hamlet and opened a swanky jazz joint in the former home of the Blackbird (and about a dozen other defunct enterprises).
Once a mainstay on the local lounge-music circuit, Tony tried his luck in Los Angeles for the last several years, but missed hanging with his Portland peeps, so he’s returned with a club for cool cats. The space is clean and polished, but far from stuffy, with (pre-bebop) jazz every night starting at 8 (closed Sunday). There’s upscale steak and salmon for the well-heeled diner, or a perfectly swell bar menu, with burger-and-fries fare. Don’t bother ordering some silly-ass rum drink here; keep it sophisticated with a rugged old fashioned or a properly poured martini. And if you show up wearing Dockers there might be a problem at the door.
No pool, no TV, no video poker, no smoking, no kidding. And make it a point to catch the Tony Starlight show on Saturday nights—it totally swings, baby. Parking across the street at the Banfield Hotel.

we really liked it
Four of us went for the first time this past weekend. The Bureau of Standards played. We had a blast, music was great, food was excellent, drinks delicious. Granted, we wanted our food quicker than it arrived, it was worth the wait and since the place was packed, we understood. It was refreshing to see a sharp dressed crowd and the people at tables surrounding us were friendly, basically a good crowd and atomsphere all the way around. I hope this place sticks around.

I was truly dissapointed
My friends and I went to Tony's for the first time and it was awful! The ambiance was everything it was suppose to be, kind of nice, but the service was horrible. We waited for over and hour and a half for our food and the waitress, couldn't keep our orders straight, kept forgetting our drinks and then when the bill came it had things on it we didn't even order. The waitress put the guy nexts to me's beers on my tab and then made a comment about him skipping out on his bill, when she was the one who put it on the wrong tab. One of our party acctually had a hypoglycemic attack waiting for her food. She wasn't anticiptating it take so long to get a hamburger, which ended up having a burnt bun. Food wasn't awful but the wait wasn't worth it. Never once did the waitress apologize for the wait. I will never go back and wouldn't suggest it to anyone else!

Tony Starlight's
My wife and took in dinner and the Tony Starlight show and left with
our cheeks hurting from laughing and smiling so much. Food and Service were
very good and the show...pure entertainment. The whole crowd, young to senior
had just the best time. We will be telling our friends and family that Tony's
has all the potential to be a landmark Oregon destination and can't wait
to go back!

Not planning on the evening out - had a phenominal time. The ambiance and the service/hospitality was great. We are planning on returning with a larger group of friends to enjoy the spirits and the entertainment. I was a great night out. The food was great and the music - need more of it all over town. Was there on the night of Bureau of Standards!

Had a great time
7 of us got together and enjoyed a vintage fashion show Tuesday night. We loved the space - the service was great. We are wine drinkers, so no one tried the cocktails, but the couple at the table next to us raved about their Manhattans. I'd heard about the great tomato soup, so ordered a grilled cheese sand. with tomato soup. The soup was sorta like eating marinara with a spoon - it was not tomato soup. The sandwich was pretty boring. No one at our table really said if they like their food or not. But the fashion show was fun, campy and entertaining. Will try the place again - maybe for Bingo nite.

Mon.Night Bingo Rocks
I won a ton of great schwag at the free Bingo on Monday night. Tony's a hoot, he makes the place hella fun. The food was great - I had the Mahi Mahi stuffed with crab, and everyone in my party said their food was excellent too. It's a little pricey, but the atmosphere makes up for it. The music was straight out of the rat pack-era, and the decor matches. The house red wine was also excellent, as was my extra dirty vodka martini. I will definitely be going back!

What the hell I really like this joint. Been back a few times. I'll be back a few more. Food is good. Music is very good. The TS show is very funny.

It's all about Tony
Omigod, what a sad state of affairs--he was everyhere, ladies and gentlemen. On stage, horning in on the admittedly mediocre "talent," schmoozing at the tables, even interrupting our talk by taking a microphone on stage and attempting some lame humor. I'm sorry, Tony, but when I go out for dinner I want it to be about me and my date, not about you. You need to relax, man, and let people enjoy themselves. And by the way you can't sing, dude.

Had fun
A buddy and I went the first or second week they were open. A pleasant and skilled trio of young guys playing jazz made for a nice environment. Food was fine, service was good. Tony came over to talk briefly. Great layout. We're trying to find a Saturday night to go with a group of friends to see what it's like on a hoppin' night. I've never seen the TS show, but hear it's great.

What a difference a month makes!
What happened to Tony Starlight's? I went 2 times in January and February and had a great time listening to excellent piano by two different guys on different nights (Jerry and Rece, maybe?). I went back and there was a Liberace wannabe doing a totally kitsch show. Is this really what Tony is aiming for? If it was supposed to be funny, I guess that's OK, but it's just not my cup o'tea. I only ate there one time, got an OK sandwich. The wine was excellent. But if the place is going to be a camp-fest I won't be back.

Great Food, Great Entertainment
We have been to Tony Starlight's three times and have had a wonderful time and great food every time.
The first time we went was on their opening week, and we were expecting the normal "opening-restaurant" troubles, but we were blown away by everything. We have eaten in the best restaurants in Portland, Los Angeles, and Seattle, and they were clearly on par with the best. We were especially surprised to have food this good at the prices they asked.
Tony’s show is always a lot of fun, and the music he books for weeknights has been great too.
Bottom line… you can’t go wrong with an evening at Tony Starlights.

We've been to Tony's several times--2 0r 3 times for dinner--have had excellent service and good food--the steak was great! the catfish was a bit spicy for my taste--the ceasear salad is a garlic lovers dream-and the tomato soup is the best I've had anywhere in Pdx--really enjoyed the music-Tony's show is fun and we love the Piano happy hour--great to have them in the neighborhood

A friend of ours told us about this club, so we thought we'd give it a try....and we had a blast. The entertainment was the best, the service was prompt, and the food was delicious. We will definately be back, and have already sent friends that direction. (They also loved it!)

Unique choice in a sea of options
I have been to Tony's thrice and will be back again!! I had a bowl of delicious tomato soup (and I don't even like tomato soup all the much, but after a sip of someone's I had to score my own bowl) and a very good mozzarella sando. The music and the ambience are distinct: you just can't find this kind of vibe in PDX.
For those people who that have issues, talk to the management instead of sniping from safety of the Information Superhighway. I mean, if you really want get satisfaction and to help others run their business versus the cheapthrill of being sanctimonious, you'll bring up your issues in person. If the management of any restaurant won't try to make it right with you, then by all means come here and give them both lock, stock and two-smoking barrels. You may want all hot-tubs cold, but don't drag others down with you.

I dropped in for a drink on a Monday night, having been told about the place by a musician friend. My straight shot of bourbon was entirely satisfactory and sufficient. The piano bar maestro, Jeffrey Kauffman was superb. The atmosphere, devoid of electronic irritations & other ugliness, was heaven on Earth. I didn't eat as I find food to be a shock to the system, but what I saw looked good. Tony and the staff were charming and attentive.

Music: good Food: bad
The only reason we stayed was the only reason we came, to hear the incredible Jeff Kaufmann on piano. The food was mediocre at best, and extremely over-priced. Tony was personable, the waitress was fine, ambience above-par. But it was the music that made the night special, nothing else.

Fabulous Night Out!
I'm really surprised at the comments about the food. We went to Tony's a few weeks ago and had an absolutely wonderful meal and thought the prices were quite reasonable for Portland. The Butternut Squash (not cheese - maybe that was the problem if you thought it was cheese) raviolis were to die for, and the steak ordered by my husband was great. Not that we're steak experts, but we've eaten at Jake's plenty and no complaints here. Definitely a great spot for a night out - good company, great service, and Tony's show is incredibly funny - you won't be sorry!

hey, we over in the northeast have been enjoying the new place in town, tony starlight's. it was been a fun and wonderful experience every time my friend's and I have gone there. Yes, we are vegetarians and wish there were more options, but all the food has been fine, and the entertainment--well, tony rocks! glad he's in our part of town!

Can't wait to go back!
I attended Tony's show shortly after the restaurant opened, and had a great time! Loved the classy vibe, romantic ambience, and dressed-to-impress crowd.. a refreshing alternative to grubby, smelly bars. I ordered what was quite possibly the biggest hamburger I've ever seen, and it was fantastic. My friend ordered salmon and had nothing but raves. All in all, a great night!

I enjoyed everything
I was there last Saturday and ordered the Ravioli, It was wonderful. Yes it is a little pricey, but my whole experience was fantastic. My server was attentive, my food was hot and delicious, drinks were made well and Tony's show was absolutely fabulous. I am a Portlander and I do not eat crap. I also wasn't a pain in the ass customer. This place is a nice change to Portland, fancy place that's not Pearl dist. pretentious.The crowd was dressed to impress and it appeared to me that the packed house enjoyed themselves all night. I will be back, without question.

The food was terrible
I attended the Bureau of Standards Big Band show on Friday, Feb. 16, 2007. First, I would like to say that the entertainment and staff was both top notch. It was an enjoyable evening except for one little thing: The food was terrible. Both my sister and I ordered the rib eye steak and received barely cooked cold steaks, cold mashed potatoes and over done mushrooms. Even when we sent it back, the steaks came barely warm. We actually waited and ordered later in order to make sure that the kitchen didn’t get overwhelmed. Not one single person at our table of eight (we ordered in different groups at different times) was impressed one bit by the food. It was a haphazard attempt at best. I was VERY disappointed, especially when the steaks cost $26 a piece. Perhaps Tony should venture to Lovely Hula Hands, Jake’s Grill or Roux and see what a real steak in that price range should look and taste like.
My advice is that they had better figure out the issues with the kitchen if they want to be successful. All of our party agreed that unless the food gets better and is worthy of the cost (which is on the high end for Portland), they would be eating elsewhere before they attend another show.
I hope that they can turn it around, I really do. Hire a real chef for starters.

ordered 3 dishes, steak (decent cut), chicken, & cheese raviolis.
food came out cold,steak ordered medium came out rare, free range chicken cam out dry & tough after 3 hours in the warmer - all food was cold. They have no idea how to cook & said they'd had no complaints - so guess the Portland clientele just sucks up & eats crap. fun place for dancing, but avoid the "supper" club aspect
